Thats because the testers are morons.

The standard 3.2 quattro a3 is meant to be a rather comfortable and luxurious cruiser, which the R32 is not setup to be.

However get the 3.2 quattro with the s-line sports package and you have a car that is slightly more competent than the R32.

Also as with all audi you can adjust the steering weight to suit you, something 99% of audi drivers dont know.

Golfs over rated, they must pay the mads to give credit.
Some old fart tried to keep up 1 day he lost it on a corner, looked in the mirror. Must have had an hart attact or gone rallying.

No but mk3 before it did it ALL the time on it's own!
They tried to nick the R32 wheels twice, failed both times but did a lot of damage (maybe in frustration?!).

AL - Sorry but I DROVE both cars and OWNED one for a year.
The S-Line "expensive chav" kit does nothing but make the ride even firmer without handling benefits.

A3 3.2 - 3 star Evo car.
Mk4 R32 - 4.5 star Evo car.

For sure! R32 (mk iv) any day of the week
The star rating from Evo demonstartes what I said earlier in the thread.... The mk4 R32 was and is an awesome car. People were so busy moaning about how bad the GTi was that they missed this gem of a car. I'm glad I owned one, so is Matt, you should own this car at least once in your life!

Fair comment but a car can be comfortable without being dull.

Dont get me wrong i like the A3 but judging by all the negative comments by the motoring press (on the 3.2) something must be amiss.
On this occasion surely you must admit that the Golf is the better car.

I'm not trying to wind you up here and i personally think the A3 looks sleeker but if i had the choice i would not buy one over the golf due to the comments of the motoring press - not saying its a crap car i'm saying for what it is meant to be the Golf knocks it into a cocked hat.

Just my opinion

Chief - Have to agree - I was really set on either an S3 (old shape but a late model) or an A3 3.2 but after a drive in both, I was disappointed.

If you want pure stealth with speed, but not ultimate handling finesse and driver involvement the A3 3.2 is ideal (looks the same as any other A3!) but if you want a bit of fun and a visual hint at the performance of your car plus a cracking soundtrack, it's the R32 every time.

I was actually going to buy an S3 and i test drove one from Audi in Bradford.

It was ok and it was competant in most aspects, quick (ish) handled ok but there was something not just there.

(A REVO remap is supposed to transform them though)

I then drove a Subaru (which i bought) and it blew my bloody socks off

Chief - I nearly went for an Impreza but I just fell in love with the R32 noise and interior as well as the look.

The R32 felt like an Impreza to drive (sort of) but with a 3.2 V6 so it won!
Still like the Subaru but after driving an Evo FQ360, I really would have to get one of those if looking for a rally rep!

Well without going off topic too much i drove a 360bhp Spec C at a recent rolling road and that really did blow my socks off. it was something else.

Nice smooth low down oomph with great gobfuls of torque and then the brakes felt like my eyeballs were popping out.

In a word 'WOW'

Hmmm - I'm talking "normal" WRX and STi so a little different!
Would love to try a Spec C.

This guy calls an audi A3 with a s-line sports kit chav. That in itself shows what a bias guy this "boy" is. And going by a previous thread you said you only drove the standard A3 3.2 and not the s-line sports kit version. Caught out again you compulsive liar.

The A3 3.2 S-line is faster around the 'ring than the R32 so your comments about its handling not benefiting is again founded to be wrong

And if any of the 3.2 VAG engined models is "chav" it would be the R32. There is a reason why all the boys on the council estates are getting R32 bodykits for their golf

If it was my money, I would buy a 2.0T quattro A3 and use the money I saved on that car over a 3.2 golf/a3 and mod it. Id mod the haldex, up the power to about 280-300hp and do some slight suspension upgrades. Then it will be bye bye Mr.3.2 V6.

In all fairness as it goes the 3.2 is a good engine - for cruising, however for a sporting application its lacking.

The Golf R32 is fun, looks nice and sounds great -the A3 is seriously dull. I dont own either but the A3 is of no interest to me - overpriced and average. Maybe I'm missing something. I guess a tuned A3 2.0T would be quick but the lovely V6 soundtrack will be lost.
