Whats the scoobys biggest fault...

Should of bought an sti m8, ive got no complaints.

the weight and its association with the crappy braking, its straight line speed after 60mph. When youve driven a lighter car with less power you begin to feel as if the scooby is really struggling to haul that big *** around.
Oh and the relative increase in the cornering prowess of other modern cars, the scooby hasnt increased by the same amount, and as a result is not quite the champion it once was.
oh, did i mention its weight?

Ok can sort of understand where your coming from but crappy braking as these are considerably better than the severely crappy subaru brakes on the classics/newage wrx's, though I understand the power issue, but thats just the way the car delivers its power (bigger turbo)
Its acutally improved more that you think consider this, 7 years back none of the classic subaru's could do the nurburgring in under 8 mins, now a fat heavy, crappy handling new age (2 years back) did just that and they come with dodgy brakes too

Have to disagree, I had a classic and now have a version 8 STi. The classic felt more agressive but in real terms the newage would have killed it on a twisty road and more than likely a straight line, the fact its so much easier to live with than a classic as an everyday car makes it so much more appealing. I cant think of many cars new or old that would get near an STi round corners if really trying. As for the brakes I could stop the newage atleast 2 cities quicker than the classic from the same speed. I do think they are not as fast in the real world as they were years ago, but try a map tweak or PPP and then its a whole different kettle of fish. Also try the prodrive springs etc....
I take it from 60mph you are trying to accelerate in 6th

own both .. a classic my00 and a newage 04 sti
classic .. rather tinny in places .. awful brakes ..but raw power and good on fuel
sti ..fantastic stopping power with the brembo's.. sound proofing a lot better handling is great in-fact a better overall drive imo but the fuel disappears quicker than the classic

brakes are poor
tmic is a stupid idea...just as easy to fit a fmic as standard.
would of been nice if the scoob was a car you could thro a little cash at and gain massive on performance

If you already have a different exhaust, air filter, possibly a better fuel pump then that price is about right, although i thought a remapp with ecutek license was more.
a 70-80bhp increase with no other mods sounds a touch unrealistic though, unless its on a classic as i dont have any personnel experience with them.

THE single worst thing about a Scoob?
Paying big money for a watered down car, while the Japs pay smaller money for the full 9 yards
Then finding out that they do it to us in reverse too: a hotter, better specced Civic than ours, costs LESS in Japan, but was built HERE
Alcazar
Oh, and forgot to say, being treated like crap by dealers if you DO import

New age mate,
I dont see the exhaust, filter and fuel pump making any increase in power TBO, its the final map that does it.
So yes, I have spent near £800 on a full service and an Exhaust before the map, but the map is the thing that increases the power

The biggest irritation I have at the moment is the all or nothing acceleration of the 02 STi, dead as a dodo below 3krpm then spools quicker than an electric fan after that, makes it hard work to drive quickly, not fast.
I've been asured a remap will make it drive ALOT better than my old ST205 did though.

another issue with the scoob is the way other performance car owners look down their noses at you and your choice of motor, it seems just because a car costing a fraction of what they payed can severely embarass them, they then re-correct their ego by convincing themselves that it doesn't matter because imprezas are council-estate, staff-on-a-rope, carling swigging, baseball cap wearing, kappa tracksuited, fake nike airmax footed, chav-mobiles, and are therefore beneath them, or am i being paranoid.................**** em anyway, i'll join the pistonheads next ride out and hold my head high.

the only person who ever looked down at me was an EVO9 owner suprisingly.
After driving an Exige S at the weekend i still think the impreza is an incredible car on-the-road. It s so easy to get the car flowing quickly from corner to corner where as the Exige S was nervous through bumps and hard to get right, showing up my lack of skill.
I just wish they'd do something about the slowing down thing cos mine simply doesnt! And yes i do have uprated pads.
Apart from that im happy, bit more straight line speed would help above 60mph, but i guess a remap would help. I realise that the impreza is just a fast road car and not a race / rally car and i think that that is sometimes forgotten.

I've got a 94 Legacy, with MY00 four pots, suspension, gearbox and wheels. Over the years I've given it some serious (ab)use on the roads around where I live (at the foot of the C&F), and I've never once had a problem with the brakes
Braided hoses and regular fluid changes are the key
Oh, and 100kg less in the weight department than a current Impreza doesn't do any harm either
Now clutches on the other hand, don't even get me started
As for the interior, that doesn't really bother me, OK it squeaks a bit, but nothing falls off, and new the Legacy - and the Impreza that followed - were over 10 grand cheaper than either a Sapphire or Escort Cosworth
I also own aSierra, and there's no way the interior (or any other part of the car come to that) is £10k better at today's prices, let alone back then

You guys are going into way too much detail.
Think of what these cars were likewhen they were new and the brakes had not worn.
208bhp and 5.3 0-60 is still good for a family car.
As a design though, the subaru has maintained one major fault!
TOP MOUNT INTERCOOLER.
Why-oh-why cant they design a car with amore efficient front mount and inlet tract to suit??

MY00. As most people say, the brakes aren't too hot. I guess a bit of money can fix that though. But...
the main thing is the interior. It just rattles and squeeks way too much
Still, it's my daily driver and the most fun I've ever had in all the cars I've owned

If you ask most of the tuners the top Mounted Intercooler, especially the one on the newer STis, is far more efficient than the majority of the FMIC kits on the market
Plus moving it to the front entails a far longer inlet tract which in itself will reduces the efficiency even further
Unless they're after seriously big power, the only reason most people want one on the front is because they believe that big shiny radiator sticking out of the front bumper looks cool

I agree that the aftermarket long inlet tracts are far from ideal as they have a long way to travel. But, im talking about a redesign and I did say that Subaru should modify the tract. Reversed inlet manifolds reduce it to the same as a car like the Evo.
I also know from personal development experience that the STI intecooler does actually start to really suffer in performance at around +/- 370bhp and not the 400 plus that people seem to 'remember hearing'
So, I stand by my original point.
The design flaw is the top mount intercooler, which was an easy design fix.
Early Legacies had a charge cooler with the tank/heat enchanger where the TMIC now sits. The Top mount was a quick and dirty cheap replacement as it bolted in as a 'direct' replacement part.

For me its:
Stone chips on the paint work - seems to happen too easily.
The image problem due to a few complete head cases.
Possibly related to the above, but the worry of getting it robbed or molested from every car park.
The cheap very plastic interior.
The tax and insurance costs.

Classic STI v3, some may be due to the age of my car.
- The ease with which it dents
- Understeer
- Brakes (hopefully sorted with better pads)
- Heavy "on/off" clutch (may just be my car)

No rattles in my classic but then again I can't hear bugger all with 5Zigen exhaust!!!!
I have to say I'm pretty happy with my car, but would have to agree with regards to paint and the very thin metal used on the bodywork, you only have to look at it and it dents
