The top mount may have been a 'quick and dirty cheap replacement', but it wasn't done for cost saving reasons, it was done because the people building the engines for the rally cars were increasingly struggling to get reliable competitive power using the Legacy's restrictive charge cooler set up

Prodrive never seemed to have a problem with the top mount set-up with their group A cars

They tended to have a lot less punctured intercoolers than Mitsubishi, Ford and Toyota too

Image is a big issue, the WR blue STi's with gold wheels just make me cringe, and the number of other imprezas around make them a common site and more and more affordable. I don't like the top mounted intercooler and bonnet scoop either. It's not difficult to get fade on public roads with 4 pot brembos .

That said, they are one of the easiest cars to drive quickly you yould possibly have, plus its reliable has four doors and a decent sized boot. Which outweigh all of the above negatives.

I agree that the aftermarket long inlet tracts are far from ideal as they have a long way to travel. But, im talking about a redesign and I did say that Subaru should modify the tract. Reversed inlet manifolds reduce it to the same as a car like the Evo.

I also know from personal development experience that the STI intecooler does actually start to really suffer in performance at around +/- 370bhp and not the 400 plus that people seem to 'remember hearing'

So, I stand by my original point.

The design flaw is the top mount intercooler, which was an easy design fix.

Early Legacies had a charge cooler with the tank/heat enchanger where the TMIC now sits. The Top mount was a quick and dirty cheap replacement as it bolted in as a 'direct' replacement part.
New Type-25 is good for 450bhp on a top mount
