Some of the guys I work with, well one is on 12k and the other is on 4k

Neither of them are grumpy nor moan, or go on strike, they both do a damn good job, especially considering their wages

I wonder how big a pay rise the Post Office boses get this year?

If it's 2.5% (including share options and perks) then fair does - but, I suspect they will mop up a much larger rise!

I support the Postmen in their action ....... they do not lay around like some other occupations, they get out there in the cold and rain ....

Thank You Pete Lewis, Adam Crozier Chief excutive got £335,000 bonus and Allen Leighton got £1 million and he is leaving Royal Mail because he didn't get his own way well good riddance to bad rubbish I say.

My uncle is a postie and he is always shattered, he does the early mornings delivering, then spends his afternoons in the sortng office, sometimes he will be home about lunch time, other days it's much later. I don't know what he's on or anything but I have never heard him moan about is job, despite weather conditions through the year he has to endure. He's a happy chap and always has a smile and the people that see him that he posts to seem to like him and he gets tips at christmas time from a lot of generous people

Tossers!! my perrin billet droplinks front and rear didn't arrive from tsl today. What little sympathy i had for the postie has now long gone i was really looking forward to getting them fitted for the weekend. Some people Me Me Me Me !!!

Jesus D.K.1 on a more serious note. I'll get the violin out for your uncle !! Personally i think the postie's are taking the **** considering all the young lads in the forces out in Irag and Afghanistan doing their bit for Queen and country for less then 16k a year !!!

I say lets pay a sensible amount for postage and reward the people who trudge through gales and hail to deliver ..... they are worth more than £22,000

In all due respect pslewis i run a hostel for homeless people in Luton and earn as near as damn in 22,000. I think the postie has a grossly overestimated his worth. The job that they do is supurb but to bring the country to it's knees because they are not earning over 1830 pounds per calander month is complete *****. Guys serving queen and country in War zone's earn less money don't winge and get on with it. As far as i can see they have more intergrity in their little fingers then any striking Postman!!

Squaddies have no integrity - where have you been?? They are animals and are there to get killed instead of us, they have never been blessed with a large amount of intelligence, they do as we tell them. End of. Braun, no Brains I'm afraid ... which is what we want them to be in the situations we send them into. The clever stay at home!

Running a hostel for the homeless is an honourable job - hats off to you. But it is not trudging the streets in gales and snow, is it now? Your clientele do that ... you are dry and warm most of the time with a nice chair and PC?

Learning Support Assistants in Secondary Schools ARE grossly underpaid - £8000 a year for working Teachers hours - whilst Teachers get £32,000++ the Teaching Assistants take the kids which would challenge the abilities of the Teacher ................... and should, in my opinion get a damned sight more than £8000 a year!

Which backs my point up there are people doing far more important job's then then the postman getting paid a pittence but we don't see them striking!!The problem is that they can't bring the country to a standstill by doing so can they

I may be in a warm workplace but deal with some pretty ****ty situiations at times involving people often inhibriated with a nautious cocktail of crack cocaine and white lightning cider !! The postie really is taking the **** in my book

you are in control of your life. I suppose going on strike is taking a hold of the situation, but if you want more money you could always enroll at a college somewhere and do evening classes to change career!

Considering what a paper boy gets paid, I think posties do pretty well. It's not exactly a skill pushing an envelope through a letterbox is it?

Either accept its a fair wage for a no skill job or get another job.

What makes me laugh is the people that moan about the wage yet work there for years on end. Why work there for 10 years or so if you are after bigger and better things? You know what the wages where when you signed up.

My belief is that the job is easy and the workers generally get to take the **** and do not work hard at all, making it a nice job for those people who want to take it easy.

Its a bit like council maintenance workers. They would get alot more money working for a private company, but they dont care as their wage reflects how hard they work. As in they get there at 8 and leave at 1 everyday. Nice and easy.

Got to agree with the above comments - it's not exactly a skilled job is it, and nurses don't get paid much better for doing a much more difficult, skilled and unpleasant job. I read an article this week that stated that people working for the Royal Mail's main competitors earn on average 20% less than those working for the RM. If this is indeed the case then I don't see any point whatsoever in striking?

I have to get up at 4:30 for my work and you don't seem me complaining and going on strike... mind you, I do only have to work 3 shifts every 8 days ;-)

Why do people keep saying they get £22K a year?

Th original poster said that 'Crozier' who I assume is the CEO of the Royal Mail, gets £22K per week! Going on the orignal posters later comment of basic pay of £323.65, which must be per week, the annual salary would be more like £16.8K.

To be honest, £24K seems a bit excessive to me, when you compare it to other occupations!

Im doing my bit for the english born and bred also with hiring and training up apprentices. Its a pitty that most firms dont follow my lead but instead hire immigrants meaning that our english youngsters are having a extremely hard time getting their foot in the door of construction

Just thought I would let you know that working for parcelfarce (which didn't strike) our parcels weigh up to 30kg domestic and 50kg international bit more than an envelope. Try handling 160 of these a day. Oh by the way the PO counter strike made our lives hell as we had to pick all the parcels that the post office is paid by us to handle, and you lot shut the AD HOC pick up service down so our contracts couldn't reach us for collections.
If you sink the PO you will kill our buisness as well.

Iv'e worked for Royal Mail for quite a few years now.It used to be a good job, the workload was acceptable ,the pay was fair for what you did despite the early starts,weekend work and sometimes crappy weather(i find it just as bad in the hot months too, can be quite tiring in the sun).It all started to go wrong when they brought the single daily delivery out as apposed to 1st and 2nd delivery.This was the start of the cost cutting which was about 3-4 years ago.They got rid of 2nd delivery and gave us longer 1st deliveries(absorb 1 delivery into another 2 deliveries).Then they started turning the full time rounds into part time(33 hours in my office).Now its voluntary redundancies which in turn are changed into bag carrying duties(22 hours).In our sorting office we accepted all these changes and worked harder - fair enough.Now i hear there trying for more voluntary redundancies in september, our office is in turmoil now.The people that they are bringing in dont care about your mail.They turn up late, dont complete their duties and leave it in the bag boxes for the next day.One guy that recently started had an inverted crucifix tattooed on his forehead needless to say he was sacked on the first day.We have managers taking deliveries out because there's not enough staff to fill the rounds.Our office used to be completely clear of mail after every working day and we used to pride ourselves on delivering the mail on time come rain or shine.Now its crazy, piles of mail left in the office which is due for delivery, stacks of parcels left undelivered.The service to YOU the paying customer has plummeted, morale is at an all time low.I weighed my post bags the other day which totalled 175llb in weight and i deliver to 700 houses per day which takes me 3.5-4 hours depending on how busy it is.Sometimes its fine on the lighter days but on the busy days i come home knackered.My back has taken a beating too over the years it, cant be helped i suppose.
The thing i dont get is the previous financial year we apparently turned the business round(Alan leightons words) after all these cuts with 600 million profit.The next year he announces a profit of just 25 million and low and behold were in turmoil again.Apparently theres a shortfall in our pension funds, because Royal Mail took a "holiday" for many years by not paying into it.Now we have to pay it back on top of a government grant for 1.3 billion to help us along.Alan leighton and the government are trying to privatise Royal Mail and have succeded partialy already (did that improve the train network?) If its all that bad why is Alan Leighton paying himself such vast amounts in bonuses?
At the end of the day the customer is going to pay for all this in the level of service they get
