Well Scooby was given a sedative tablet earlier and since then he is struggling to walk around, and when he does its like he is pi$$ed

I received a bill this morning from the Emergency Vets for Scooby's first overnight stay at the beginning of the week, and they are asking for payment

Now this fee, is also on my statement from the normal Vets and they have already charged me, and had payment for this overnight stay fee, they also charged me 16 quid transportation fee too, which is ok I guess as it is a 20 mile round trip and does take someones time

When I collected Scooby this morning from the Emergency Vets, I had to pay 35 quid for his injection and tablets, and looking at the receipt, also his overnight stay last night

I had better make sure I double check my normal Vets bill on Monday as they had better not charge me again for Scooby's overnight stay, or transportation as they asked if I could take him and collect him as they were a bit thin on staff

I do have to take Scooby back to the ER tomorrow for another Vitamin K injection, so I will query the invoice from them with them, and also the money I paid this morning, and why it is half the price of the first overnight stay

I really don't know how much more of this we can physically, mentally and financially take

Scooby has seemed fine, even though he has been a bit *out of it* with the sedatives...

We decided this morning that we would leave the sedative until he had been for his injection because he could barely move last night.

Steve was just getting ready to go and take him and the bleeding started again, unfortunately I was busy up stairs so it was the kids that ran up telling me all in a panic and there was loads of blood over the carpets

I have cleaned up what I can and Steve has rushed him back to the vets, I know he was going anyway, but this is just yet another blow Before leaving he vomited up another pool of blood. We can't stand it, it's getting more and more upsetting and we're drained from worrying about both Scooby and the financial side. Whenever we start to feel a bit of hope and he perks up etc, this happens

I don't for one minute begrudge Scooby the costs, but as has been said before, we have a baby on the way and pretty much what we have saved has almost gone Our head's are completely fecked with all this now

No Jamie, he hasn't... Just had a text off Steve and it's really not good

Says he has still got loads of blood pouring out of his nose, it's clotted in his nose and his mouth and his other nostril is full of blood and pouring blood out too It's all in his throat ans he's gargling on it.

Vet's doing anothe PCB to check for regeneration of blood cells and he might have to have a transfusion

If it gets worse then he will either be put to sleep or bleed to death

Sonic's waiting there while they do the tests to see what's happening, Scooby's pretty much out of it because of the sedative and the vet said she's not going to charge for consultation today...

I have just got back from the ER Vets

It was so heartbreaking seeing him lay there unable to move from the sedative, blood pouring out of his nose, he was lying there snorting, wheezing, gargling, he has a large clot in his left nostril so is causing all the blood to go into his throat, and now to come back out of his other nostril

His eye has started weeping blood too now

The Vet did the blood test, and his pbc is still down at 23 (normal is 50-54) and he *is* regenerating blood cells, but at a slow rate, about on a par with what he is losing

He is only just managing to regenerate enough cells to only bleed them back out again, and so his current pbc is holding steady

I have had to leave him in again, but she has told me he may now need intravenous fluids if he continues, and possibly a blood transfusion if it gets worse

She did tell me that the blood weeping from his eye will be relatively normal due to the drugs and blood loss, she is going to phone me later regardless of how he is doing, but more so if she needs to treat him further

As incredibly difficult as this is, we may have to consider having him put to sleep if things continue as they are, it hasn't been discussed as such with the Vet, but they have said discussions will have to be had regarding the spiralling costs, they do appreciate we can't afford to spend over £100 everytime he has to go in

This is the third major bleeding he has had now in less than 7 days (although it started last Sunday evening at around 9.30pm)

What is so heartbreaking in all of this, is that he does seem to be his normal self, even during the bleeding and this morning whilst I was getting ready to take him, pouring with blood he still jumped up at the gate and barked at people walking past the house, with his tail wagging firmly

She said he isnt in any pain, and will only be suffering minor discomfort with the bleeding etc, but obviously will be weaker due to the loss of blood, which does make it even harder to even contemplate euthanasia

He has suffered a large loss of blood, and I am very concerned that the next time might just be too much loss of blood

The Vet said I could have brought him back home, as all they will be doing (and can do) is monitor him and clean up the blood) the only advantage they would have from him being there is that if he does detoriate even further, then they can at least get him on a drip etc

We are really at a loss as what we can do now

Have you been given a rough idea of what is causing this bleeding?? Poison I can understand but that seems to have been ruled out.

While there's a wag there's hope but if you have to make the big decision you know you have done your best. I've had to do it twice in my life and it's hard. But over time the pain melts into pleasant memories. Come on boy

Tough though this is - it isn't just about the money, it's about quality of life and chance of recovery. Many of us on here have had to make the awful heart rending decision about whether or not to have an animal put to sleep, and we all sypathise with you 100%.

If good wishes and support could fix everything, then there'd be no worries at all as you have those in abundance.

The Vets aren't really sure what is causing the bleeding, although they are still pushing down the Aspergillosis route, and she said the tablets option isn't that successful really, and also the operation procedure is more successful but can take 3 or 4 goes to completely iradicate it

Poison has definately been ruled out, and again it all still points to Aspergillosis

I orignally started the thread as I was looking for help and advice as to the possible cause of the nose bleed, prior to taking him to the vets, and one of the reasons for continuing posting, and for the level of detail, is that maybe, just maybe it may help someone else if their dog ever gets into a situation like this, or indeed that there possibly maybe a SN vet who could offer more of a second opinion as to the causes of this

I really wouldn't wish this trauma on any person or animal, it is almost becoming soul destroying now, to the point that we are doing everything we can for him, as are the Vets, both at the normal Vet and the ER Vet, they have all said what a wondeful lovely dog he is, and that he is as daft as a brush, but incredibly loveable too, and have really enjoyed him being there despite the circumstances

My sister asked me yesterday would it not be easier in some respects to have him put to sleep with him only being 2 years old, than if he was 10 or 15 years old, I sort of knew what she meant, and she didn't mean anything horrible or nasty about it at all

I said that in a lot of respects it is so much harder to even contemplate putting him to sleep because he is so young and so full of life, and that the only time I have considered euthanasia is if the Vet were to call and say he has deterioated beyond a good survival

The way things have gone this last week, and the way things are looking like they may be going, it could almost be a financial decided factor on his fate, and that is really something that I dont even want to consider, but ultimately it may be the only option we have left if things continue as they have been

At the end of the day, throwing all this money at him now, isnt even beginning to cover any costs of any treatment for whatever it is that he may have, all the money at the moment is being used to essentially keep him going

I have a few things that I can sell (if indeed they do sell) I cannot get overtime at work as it really isn't an option, my only other option is to try and get some kind of cash in hand work, which I have in the past but it has dropped off and has been few and far between anyway

What little savings we do have have now been swallowed up on Scooby, which was money really put aside for house repairs and for the baby wich is due in december

I cant sell the car as I need that for work, and in the near future the car will have to be sold anyway to get a people carrier of some kind once the baby is born.

After all we have spent on him upto now, it would almost seem criminal to have him put to sleep, but also it must be horrible and traumatising for him to have to keep going through this as well, although its primarily discomfort, the loss of blood and bleeding episodes cannot be nice for him at all

I know, and this is one of the things that is making it so heart wrenching in that depsite all of what is happening to him, is he almost as normal as he is when he was well

He was in the Vets earlier and whilst the blood was pouring out of his nose, he just sat there licking it back up off the floor, and looking round at the other dogs coming into the vets

And this morning he vomited a large amount of blood, yet still stood up on his back legs wagging his tail and barking at passers by, I went to put his harness and lead on, and he rolled over on his back just as he would normally, and wanted his stomach tickling, and again wagging his tail like mad

he then jumped up onto the table that he sleeps on and sat there again wagging his tail like nothing was wrong

I have just taken a look at the Blue Cross website, and unfortunately they only have hospitals in London and Grimsby, neither of which are close to us

We are in St Helens, near Liverpool

Blue Cross look similar to the PDSA, and you have to be means tested, and sadly to recieve any kind of benefits you need to be in receipt of Housing or Council Tax benefit

We dont get either as I am on a Salary, and have a mortgage too

We once had a persian ***** cat that had to have a lot of operations. We went ahead with it and then claimed back on Insurance. (£2000)

He lived for another 5 yrs, but his quality of life was poor, and from day one both me an my other half wished we hadnt put the little fella through it all.

He went to the queen mother vets hospital, and i made the trip 6 or 8 times.
But he was never the same little fella after.
The problems he had was a liver shunt.

I hope you get things clear in your mind what to do. It must be a much harder desision to make as hes looks well within himself.

I have just phoned the Vets to check on Scooby, and they said he has had a small nose bleed again around 3pm, but he is still drowsy from the acp (sedative, which also lowers his blood pressure) and he is comfortable for the time being

I will phone them again later if I havent heard back from them in the meantime

I have just yet again cleaned the conservatory of all the blood, not an easy thing to do at all, would much rather it be his 'business' that I am having to mop up

I would like to offer a massive thank you on all our behalf here for those offering to donate, I really dont know what to say and im slightly overwhelmed by the genorosity of you all

I really don't know if we could take any money from people for Scooby, I also don't know what the implications would be from Scoobynet's point of view.

Also I would feel so bad if it comes to him ultimatley having to be put down becuase either he deteriotes so badly or that we eventually run out of money to pay for any further treatment,

It hasnt come to that yet, but I do have a Pool table and a guitar or two that can go up for sale to help pay for the costs, and maybe a few other bits b bobs that possibly could be sold off.
