just to put your mind at rest, ***** size isnt everything. Heres a few things that may help. 1st) He was following. 2) The scooby has 300bhp BUT weighs 1500kg AND is 4wd, so its not a fast car in a straight line, period. 3) The scooby is not the supercar slayer that everyone claims. It just happens to be a fastish cheap car that handles pretty good. It IS NOT a supercar. And just to top it all of cos im in an evil mood tonight, he could have simply been a better driver then you.

^^ This thread runs for a whole day without the usual "your car is not the slaying all before it car that it used to be" ... I'm amazed!

but to add,

i had a play with a 996 turbo a couple of weeks ago.

to cut a long story short, when i was in front and he was stuck to me. He overtook and when i caught up i was stuck to him. When i pulled off i beeped and flashed my lights, he stuck his hand out the window and waved.

He was cool about it, probably cos he was a little bit older to understand the funside of things. I could have quite easily been annoyed that a car that cost a third of his was able to keep up, but he wasnt. I would have liked him to be lol. Think about that. Cos im sure thats what the golf driver was thinking when he was stuck to your bum.

I had a play with a big trials bike tonight. He was riding like a dick - weaving all over the road, up the ars% of cars on the motorway. I passed him - without a problem. When we came off the motorway he stuck on my tail, weaving all over the road. I waved him past. He gave me the finger. What's wrong, pal? Iced by a Skoda? Get a life, FFS

behave yourself! the STi is slightly more than 'fastish' isn't it and around £30k is hardly bargain basement is it.

The golf prob had a jabba (or similar software) remap which gives it 250-260BHP (standard is 200 BHP) and gives it a health 270-290 lbft of torque (standard torque is 206), added to that if it had the flappy paddle gearbox with quicker gear shift and less trans loss, thats why he probably kept up with you

No worries though remap for you and turbo back exhaust should see you good

Default Sti vs Golf r32 sti (the golf has no chance)

In my 53 reg sti non prodrive I wasted my mates golf r32 (2006) so many times times he gave up at the end, on the m62 motorway. Golf GTI which is slower than a r32, you should have kicked his **** into middle of next week. my mate was the passenger in the r32 making a video he said " It just felt as if we were parked up " Here is the proof check the video clip also in the race is an evo mr fq 320 I gave him a good race on my sti. You just got to know how to blast them

Not wasn't me on three counts.

1. My car isn't red
2. I wouldn't be left standing.
3. I don't race scooby's on weekends !

A mapped GTi isn't slower than an R32.

Also I can't imagine any driver of a GTi wishing he was behind the wheel of an STi. Let's face it they are similar money so presumably if they wanted an STi they could have one

R32 is similar money I believe, but the GTI is probably closer to the WRX in all respects.

That clip does suggest that the other Golf Carts we're going on about have to of been tweaked. The worse thing I can think of, is that your not on boost at the right time.
It happened to me once or twice...... actually it happened to a friend of mine who was driving my car against a CL AMG (The Long 2 door ones) We went round the odd roundabout in Maidenhead and then onto a nice straight towards the Motorway but he wasn't on boost. Now I didn't expect to pass him but a bit closer would of ben nice

STi is about 25K from a discounter, a GTI with decent spec cost more or less the same. Most likely the Golf cost more.

So if you get the Subaru from a discounter and a Golf with loads of extra then they are about the same price. So they are not the same price are they?

There is a huge difference in the list price of the 2.

If you got the Golf from a discoiunter and the STI with loads of extras them wow they'd be miles apart...what a silly way to make a point

I think the point is there are hardly any extras you can specify on a STi and there are almost no GTi's out there without 3-5K worth of options on them, certainly DSG by itself is the best part of 2 grand. Therefore the purchase price of both cars is likely to be within a couple of grand of each other.

What's silly is your denial of reality...........

So you agree with me then, they are not close on price?

No the exact opposite. In the real world they are probably within a few grand of each other. Unless of course you think a couple of grand more in value is enough to have the STi owner wishing he was in the Golf?

Shame on you for even suggesting such a thing on this site.

You have to of 'Had a play' or 'Had an encounter' or 'Come across' or as I like to put it 'drove recklessly putting your own and others lives at risk, because either your ***** or brain is too small, and you can't consider the consequences of your actions'

I'd have thought so, when I come across a Subaru driver I usually let them get on with it as they invariably have something to prove. Can't say when I had mine I felt the same need to impress.

Hold on - can you only buy these cars brand new?

What about second hand prices? (The Golf wins hands down on this one and we all know how IM like to shaft scooby owners on the good old depreciation)

I had the choice to buy either, but my cash went on the Golf. My Scooby days are in the past now.

I was bored the other day so i test drove the new VXR Astra.

Thay is fast as ****!! Around 237BHP i think??

Only criticism is that the front wheels really have problems putting the power down on the road, tended to drift from side to side slightly under very hard exceleration. Keep the boring salesman quiet though!!!

That's pretty conclusive if you ask me and the Sti was giving the fq320 some run for his money. The R32 is faster than the standard Gti and the tuned argument is futile, as I have said before, all cars can be tuned, where does it end, same applies to your "with extra's" argument on price, so add a set of PFF7's, leather interior and sat nav to the Sti and the £6k or so difference still applies to the two cars in standard form. There are R32's out there with 500bhp. I had a mkiv R32 before my STi PPP and it was brilliant but it couldn't touch a STi in standard form but it could outrun a WRX. The new golf Gti is a very good car and quick to boot but if one kept up with the STi it was either chipped or the scoob was caught in the wrong gear. Video shows you all the proof you need and it was the faster R32 it was up against, not the slower GTi

I am a big fan of the Golf (mkiv) it is well built and the 3.2 V6 is the business but no contest here.

PS can't wait for a 300+ bhp, 4wd version on the golf it will be class but will be very expensive (30k+) I think.

I think you are missing the point. We are/were talking about the OP who found his car wasn't as fast as he thought V a GTi. The chances are it was DSG and tuned. All I've been saying here is that it's hardly a surprise and that I can't see a GTi driver being envious of an STi as they can obviously afford one.

It's a fact that an R32 MKV Golf is a lot slower than a remapped GTi or a standard Edition 30.

So what about a modified R32 you see how that argument is futile Just because it doesn't have a turbo, just bolt one on to it and watch the tuned Gti and edition 30 (remapped GTi) disappear in your rear view mirror, am I right?

No, I think what you'll find is we are talking about reality. A reality where many turbo car owners go and get their cars mapped for £500. The STi owner in this case should probably have done the same and found his car was much faster than the GTi.

To get decent power gains from an R32 is many thousands of pounds as I'm sure you are aware.

An edition 30 is more than a remapped GTi FYI, the ignorance on this website is stunning at times............

ED30 isn'ta remapped GTI. Has bigger turbo, I/C etc.

Is an STI a remapped WRX ?

exactly
