golf gti v sti

The facts are that people vastly overestimate the performance differential between cars. They think that an STI should obliterate other cars and that they should disappear from their rear-mirrors.
This is obviously not true. On the track-challenge website for example, the STI does a lap of 1:17, the GTI 1:21. Considering this is under "race" conditions it shows that the GTI is not exactly far behind. Throw in road conditions, driver ability, the gear used etc and on a public road you would expect their to be even less variation between them.

No, I think what you'll find is we are talking about reality. A reality where many turbo car owners go and get their cars mapped for £500. The STi owner in this case should probably have done the same and found his car was much faster than the GTi.
To get decent power gains from an R32 is many thousands of pounds as I'm sure you are aware.
An edition 30 is more than a remapped GTi FYI, the ignorance on this website is stunning at times............

Love it guys, keep it coming good wind up, at least you know the difference in editions
Good post that on the lap times, so lets run that over 20 laps, that will be 1min 20s behind or over a lap in the Sti's terms, that's a veritable gulf in performance I'd have let you off with a few tenths but 4s, no way
Then factor in road conditions and you reckon that decreases the difference, eh no that improves the 4wd cars performance over 2wd, you didn't know that! I'll explain for you in simple terms. A car running over uneven ground that is 2wd has 50% of its wheels able to provide propulsion at any time, 4wd has 100% so if two lose contact with the road surface it still has 50% providing thrust, not so on the 2wd and don't get me started on damp or wet roads or does this make the Gti faster still
Remember guys I am a big fan of the Golf (don't like the mkv shape though or I may have bought another R32) and the R32 is still my favourite car to date (STi PPP is brilliant for different reasons, more practical for one) so don't think I have a biased opinion on the scoob

Could be Mr LEWIS
Watch out, after he hijacks threads.
A bit miffed he hijacked mine on uprated fuel pumps.
Then the Great Mr Rwle offered his advice on uprated Fuel Pumps.
As a result of his advice, my Scoob is in tomorrow for a Walbro.
Thanks Pete for helping me make my mind up.
Regards.

if he was behind you how do you know it was a GTI and not a R32 which has a 3.2 engine which google says is 240bhp, so he probably would keep up with you unless you leathered it

I had some fun a while bk with a GTI edition 30
with DSG and a decent driver in it (mate of mine)
He was in front & i was in his boot
Up his **** even when it seemed he was riskin his life to lose me
it was a quick car compared to others ive played with
(standard bugeye, S2000 etc etc). but if i was in front i would have lost him & bin @ the peti station fillin up again before he found me
It was a combination of off the lights, overtaking, twisties etc........
I have to say tho his edition 30 looks absolutley mint and the comfort is amazing compared to my RAW scooby. All down to personal taste

STI PPP (standard if u can call it that) will leave any standard Golf GTI by many car lengths 0 - 70. Totally trounced one in my Merc S500 and my STI PPP would have seen the Merc off no probs! I guess some people do not know how to get best out of their cars via changing gear at right revs and quickly. The performance figures in magazines are not just made up. The Scoob STI PPP is damned quick whether u like it or not. Hardly any cars in the world do 4.8 seconds 0-60 so in real world this translates to the Scoob being much quicker than all hot hatches that I can think of aswell as some supercars. After 60 I suspect that the Scoob will be annihilated by prob all supercars.

I keep reading things on these forums where somebody expresses surprise to the power/speed of a car which managed to keep up with them and I can't help but think..... Really?? I wouldn't consider that car to be in the same league as my scooby, let alone decent competition!
ANY car that can achieve 0-60 in sub 6 seconds, or better, sub 5 seconds is literally supercar quick and front wheel drive hot hatches quite simply cannot compete against a 4 wheel drive toned-down rally car.
I realise that certain hot hatches may come close(ish) to my scooby round a track... So I'll just steer clear of tracks and humiliate them on the road instead.

Thankyou! Someone that sees sense! Scoobs will not beat anything on the road by any means but with a good driver behind the wheel capable of achieving the true potential of it then it is quite simply quicker than the vast majority of cars on this planet FACT! It is however a car that needs to be driven hard and properly to realise its full potential. As I value both my life and my license I have been in situations where blatantly lesser cars have played and I have simply let them go after maybe showing them the 0 - legal limit performance of the STI. Only a big bike and a Skyline were quicker simple as!

Certain "big cc" cars will have the advantage accelerating from motorway speeds too. All IMHO.

Think it depends very much on the road - dual carriageway, Scoob isn't too special. Bumpy "Twisties" (damn, It's like saying "MacBeth" ! ), the Scoob is up with best.........also depends what's been done to the Scoob !

The Subaru does do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, but only if it is launched brutally from a standstill and making its 4WD advantage count. Now, when accelerating from a roll this 4WD can actually be a hindrance as there is higher drivetrain losses and more weight to lug around.
The golf may only be 2WD which shafts its standing start times, but on a roll it may actually be quicker due to lighter weight and less drivetrain losses.
I think many of you compare the golfs 0-60 time of 6.7secs vs the STI's of 4.8 and expect the golf to be a dot in the rear view mirror. Not so. It may be 2 secs faster 0-60 but lets compare 50-70mph in gear times:
Golf GTI: 5.9s
STI: 5.1s
That's much closer, and I would guess the ED30 GTI (or remapped GTI) will be about exactly the same pace as the STI.

ITs pretty unreal what you can get out of those 1.8T lumps.. I know someone whos got a proven 365bhp Skoda Octavia with a Quaiffe 6speed that makes most things look stupid..

Just some stat corrections guys, the stated 0 - 60 for the STi PPP is 4.6s not 4.8 (this is for the WRX PPP) and the 0 - 100 is 12.2s so on the comment about them running out of pace is a little untrue me thinks. Yes they suffer heavy transmission losses but hitting 100 in a smidge over 12s is quick in any terms. The subaru is "super car quick" the golf isn't, but is still a very fast hatchback So basically going through 100 the subaru will still be pulling away as it has been since 0. The comparison on the 50 - 70 times simply confirms this, it's 0.8s quicker for goodness sake, that's a huge difference between performance at this level
Even allowing for losses at 23% on the scooby it is throwing 230bhp onto the road. The golf with only 10% losses (this is a guess as I'm not sure what they lose but it can't be less than this surely)) is only putting 180bhp down so the scoob is running with about 30% more power on the road. Over a normal road the scooby's traction will be far superior to the 2wd car with all the lumps and bumps. Now bring on the rain and a few bends
