Drivel. Let me summarise what many of you are failing to grasp.
The Subaru does do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, but only if it is launched brutally from a standstill and making its 4WD advantage count. Now, when accelerating from a roll this 4WD can actually be a hindrance as there is higher drivetrain losses and more weight to lug around.
The golf may only be 2WD which shafts its standing start times, but on a roll it may actually be quicker due to lighter weight and less drivetrain losses.
I think many of you compare the golfs 0-60 time of 6.7secs vs the STI's of 4.8 and expect the golf to be a dot in the rear view mirror. Not so. It may be 2 secs faster 0-60 but lets compare 50-70mph in gear times:
Golf GTI: 5.9s
STI: 5.1s
That's much closer, and I would guess the ED30 GTI (or remapped GTI) will be about exactly the same pace as the STI.

Already done it mate and I don't even have the PPP. Rolling start with him in front... brand new Golf GTi... and I had to wait for him at the next roundabout to thank him for at least trying

Had a mk4 2002 Golf GTI 1.8T 25th Anniversary for a bit in between swapping back and forth from my my98 Impreza. The Golf was pretty quick but would be left for dead by an STi or WRX, however, I know of plenty that look completely standard and are easily running 300+bhp (would cost maybe 3-4k tops going from 180bhp to that) and shedloads of torque, they would easily keep up with an STi on pretty much any roads as the handling ain't that bad with a few tweaks. The 30th edition Anniversary is even more tuneable so a tweaked one would again not have any probs but a standard one would lose against the STi. It's as simple as that.
Wouldn't have thought the mapping was out if it was a tweaked GTI but best have it checked out I suppose, just in case, as we don't have a crystal ball to be able to tell (although some peeps on here seem to think they have )
I did like the Golf, was a very well put together and nice car to drive but I just prefer the Impreza and it's driving feel. Both cars have their merits.
Defo agree about ending this thread, lol, but not about the 'Every Golf Git i see from today will get put in its place', as you might get a few nasty surprises from some.
Anyhoo, nice to be back in the Impreza!
Cheers,
Tom

my car is older but my friend murry has a leon cupra (basically a cheap golf) i have a 99 type R with 310 bhp,he's running 340+ bhp, quaife box, diff, dahlback manifold bigger turbo etc off the line my car is quicker, rolling from 30 its quite even,he is quicker on the twisties as he has a decent chassis and is a better driver than me and withthe 6 speed he is faster top end,now i love my car but his looks standard (apart from aston callipers) so you never know what your racing.

As i said earlier i had DSG GTI and despite all its bell and whistles it never put a smile on my face like my PPP'd STI, I'll be like the Cheshire cat if i get it mapped
