LOL Oldsplice

Swampster, although the money donated has enabled the rest of his treatment, words of support etc are just as important to us, as last week through all that trauma, you all helped with kind words etc, so you posting means a lot, and the same goes to anyone else who was / is unable to donate through circumstances, we do understand that not everyone is able to and we are so, so very grateful to everyone who has!!

As I have said before, you ARE all amazing

And why not become an SNET member? After all, SN let us do this thread and donated, so helped us too

Scoob99, a takeaway would be plain cheeky LOL, but, if after his treatment there is a small amount left, I don't think anyone would object to a few tasty treats for Scooby

Right

Took Scooby off to the Vet Hospital, what a nightmare he was, he would not settle at all, and jumped, barked, whined at just about everything and everyone, I wasn't in the waiting room long before being 'asked to wait outside till he calmed down' they were nice about it, but I told them he wouldn't calm down and it's because he is on a lead and can't go sniffing around cocking his leg or playing with the other dogs

I got in with the Consultant and Scooby still wouldnt let up at all, so it made it very difficult to speak, or to hear what the Consultant was saying, but 40 mins later I managed to get enough information to grasp what is going to happen

We spoke about the issues Scooby has had, and about his notes from the Vet's and he told me that there are some new drugs now which are cream based and not the thick sticky emulsion that has been used in the past, and he will give me some papers on it on Scooby's discharge as I have read up on aspergillosis and the various treatments

He is going to drill Scooby's head into his Sinuses, and insert the cream, and this will stay in for about 2 weeks, and work its way all through the nasal areas

He is going to take an X-Ray of his Nasal area, one to check the extent of any damage that may have been caused, and two to double confirm it is Aspergillosis, as he said the Serology is a good indicator but not enough on its own, but also the bleeding from the nostril is another good indicator

He said with Aspergillosis it is very difficult to diagnose, and one test alone is never usually enough, but the symptoms along with the tests are the way to do it effectively enough to warrant this kind of invasive treatment

We had a reasonable chat on the various methods of treatment and he did say that this is now pretty much the most effective method and no longer requires the 10 days of Hospitalisation and flushing twice a day (I wish the main Aspergillosis website would update its details lol)

They will keep him in for observations during Thursday evening, and they will phone me tomorrow afternoon once surgery is complete with an update

All being well he will be available for discharge on Friday

This particular method of treatment is £1000.00 plus any drugs he may need, now what they didnt confirm is whether the X-ray is included in that £1000 or not, they did tell me yesterday any drugs that are required will be extra cost, and said he will more than likely start a new course of Anti Biotics upon discharge

I think upto now my own Vets fees have finished, certainly for the time being, but I am to contact them once I get Scooby back, plus there is an outstanding balance of £115 to pay them, which will be cleared on Monday

I will on Friday once I get Scooby back, and the invoices scan them all in and post them on both threads, so everyone can see exactly how much has been spent, and what it has been spent on

I have stopped the fund slightly short of the target as one or two cheques have been sent, and also a number of people have donated a significant amount of money, I didnt want this to continue to happen and go way over the target, as we now know more or the less the total costs, barring any hidden drug/X-ray charges and Scooby making a 100% recovery without any further costs

Everyone has been incredibly generous, and we are so grateful for everyone's help and support at this difficult

I asked how long roughly before we would have an idea that the treatment has been successful, and he told me the cream will stay for about 2 weeks, but he still could bleed for upto a month or so afterwards, and sort of to take it from there, as it is a little unkown territory as every dog is different

He also said the surgery is painless, Scooby wont feel a thing, and wont even know what has been done, apart from he will have a shaved head

Scooby the Skinhead

Once again we would like thank Everyone, if it wasn't for you all, then Scooby might not just be here now

I can imagine him looking quite comical with a bald head Just as long as the drilled bits don't look too gruesome I am almost dreading seeing his head

LOL, sorry G-I-A-S

He looks so funny with that paint

Scooby got paint on him whilst I was painting outside a few months ago

I have phoned the Hospital, he has had his Pre-Meds so will be in his drunken state again and is about to go in for his surgery

They said to phone back in about an hour to get an update on how things are

He hasn't had a nose bleed either yet, which is a good sign

Has always kind of made me laugh that, whenever you see a dog or someone is talking about theirs, they tend to say she when it's a he and he when it's a she depending on what the owner has

I often refer to other people's dogs as *he* unless I know for sure what it is, probably because ours is a he, then I have had other people refer to Scooby as a she by bitch owners

They have told me because of his procedure he will be done last, but it should be fairly soon

They told me the Consultant should phone me once he is finished, but to phone back about 7pm if I still havent heard anything from them

And also to phone around 9.30 tomorrow morning to make sure he will be able to come home tomorrow

OK MAJOR DEVELOPMENT IN SCOOBY

The Consultant has just phoned and he is currently NOT going to perfom the surgery on Scooby at least for the time being

What he has done, is taken some more X-rays of his nasal area to check for any destruction of the tiny bones in the nasal area, as in Aspergillosis cases these usually present themselves as what looks like hole punch holes in the tiny bones (turbinates)

However, he cannot find any trace of this damage or anything else for that matter, so he has currently withdrawn the treatment for the time being

What he then did was a rhinoscope/endoscope to look in depth at the nasal area, and checked the right nostril and everything appeared to be fairly normal

When he checked the left nostril he noticed quite a few lumpy pink looking polyps, or very similar to polyps and upon touching one, he noticed it tried to start a bleed, so he has now found the cause of the nose bleeds

Whilst doing the rhinoscope/endoscope he has taken a few biopsies, and has some very good samples now to be sent off for testing, which will take a few days to get the results back

He is now uncertain that Scooby does have Aspergillosis, but hasnt ruled out the fact that he may well have been exposed to it at some point, due to the serology coming back positive, and as a result if these current findings he feels that drilling two large holes in Scooby's head and pumping it full of anti fungal cream wont be of any benefit to Scooby, and may even cause irritation and possible problems with the polyps

With all this information he said he will more than likely keep Scooby in till Saturday now, but will phone tomorrow at some point to let me know what is happening, and will keep him sedated for tomorrow anyway to keep his blood pressure down

I asked about how this will affect the costs now, and he said that if he does still perform the Aspergillosis Surgery then he will do it for the costs already stated, obviously the polyps are going to have to be treated and I guess that will become more apparent once we know what they are

From the tests your vet has done will he be able to rule out (or in) a tumour as considered by the yank vet in an earlier post?

Hang on in there boy....... Don't let the bast.... (you know the rest )

David

I printed that out and showed it to the Consultant yesterday and we did discuss it slightly this evening when he phoned

He didnt mention tumours, but he is very aware of the tumours in the post I showed him, he is waiting for the results of the biopsies to come back before making any further judgements and/or treatment

Although it might not necessarily be a good thing, I do feel a little bit more comfortable that the cause of his nosebleeds has been found

I read the other post last night (all 14 pages) and I really didn't know which way it was going to go, I'm a dog lover and it was breaking my heart. I know you have reached your target but if you need any more for vet fees then I'm more than happy to give you my money box, it's a big plastic bottle which I fill over the year and normally give to charity. let me know and good luck..

Thanks everyone

We will keep things updated as much as we can too.

We have not heard a thing from the vet since last night, so we are assuming all is OK with Scooby up to now, don't know when he will be home or what will happen now I guess until the polyp biopsy results come back and that will probably be sometime next week

I am a bit concerned as, although the vet hasn't mentioned this, the polyps could be cancerous. Probably shouldn't be worrying about things like that really until we know, but it's yet again more waiting around!!

I have just spoke to the Consultant and he is happy with Scooby at the moment, he hasn't had another nose bleed today, only yesterday during the Biopsy and Rhinoscopy

He is keeping him in tonight for further observation and I am to phone after 9.30 tomorrow morning to see if he is ok to come home

If he continues as he is (eating & toileting well and no nose bleeds) then he will be fine to come home

The Consultant has also said that he wont be able to give any indication at all regarding these 'polyps' until the biposy results are back, and then a course of treatment can be decided and carried out

He said it may take a week to get the results back (weekend and all that) but once he does he will be a better position to discuss the relevant details with us

Thanks to one SN'etter, and having passed the thread info to his Vet friend in the States, my Consultant is quite happy to have some professional dialog with this Vet regarding Scooby as they have shown an interest in what has been a rather unusual case upto now, so his details have been passed on

Just got back from picking Scooby up

He was full of life, and when I told them I was here to collect Scooby the said 'Oh the MAD one '

Looks like yet anotherr Vet has really enjoyed having him, I asked if he had been too noisy etc, and they said no, he has been fine, he is just completly nuts and mad as a hatter

I have to take him back if he starts any bleeding again, and it will probably be Thursday or Friday before the results are back from the Biopsy, he didnt confirm that they were Polyps, just that they were Polyp like, but wont know until the results are back

Treatment could range from a steroid spray to full surgery for removal

Cost 434 quid today, for the x-rays, biopsies, hospitalisation and injections

Still no treatment for the condition yet
