Whats the best VIRUS removing software at the mo??
#33
In my experience, McAfee is a pile of cr4p, but I haven't gone near it for a couple of years. I use Sophos on my heterogenous network, simply because I haven't found another decent package that will do any OS (yes, I know, LINUX/UNIX don't need AV, but it helps when your using file servers that are accessed by a variety of OS's). I can do a network upgrade in about 5 mins using Sophos, plus automatic upgrades to the virus definitions, plus a new disc sent every month with new toys, er I mean tools on it
As for alarmist, please explain, I find Sophos to be very unintrusive, I never hear a peep from it unless there's an actual virus.

OK I'll explain the alarmist part. Today from my email inbox I removed around 10-20 emailed alerts from Sophos Antivirus. Most if not all were already detected by McAfee, this was a week or two's worth. These emails cause untold calls to our helpdesks where we pay staff to tell customers that they're already protected. The email lists are also populated by Journalists who then call me to see if there is a threat.
Hope this helps.

So the company is alarmist, not the software
I've found that in terms of response to new threats, Norton, McAfee and Sophos are usually about equal, it depends how you're using the software as to whether you think a product is good or not.

I support Network Associates Virus Scan 4.51, Netshield and Groupshield - Domino... And have evaluated sophos's alternative... maybe cheaper but you get what you pay for... Sorry Would never recommend anything other that NAI, I find the performance issues are more down to how it is configured... and all computers should be running antivirus software at all times... so they shouldnt know that it slows the machine down... it is soon to become a sackable offence to disable virus scanning software within our organisation.

David, glad to hear it. ePO is an outstanding piece of software. Some great updates coming out this year as well.

No idea what the Symantec OEM rules (ie if are they different to the MS ones) but generally OEM product should only be sold with hardware.
