I bought my MY01 JDM STI around for a few weeks totally standard and to be honest there wasn't much that would touch it, not that i really tried. 280 BHP did seem enough, but the bug got the better of me and i've already spent around £1600 on mods and when i go to Bob Rawle in September i will fit the mods and and have Bob map it.
However, i do wonder if it will be all worth the £2300+ in the end.
I've had bad experiences with Impreza's so only time will tell really??
Can the standard JDM STI really safely handle around 340 BHP with regular hammerings even with regular services and oil changes???

Is it not true that my enhancing the performance on one part of the car often results in other parts being stressed? Be it brakes, suspension etc...?
I've had my car mapped twice. First when my engine was rebuilt and then again once I'd had larger injectors installed. The second time the boost was increased from standard boost to 1.5bar. All ran well for about 3 months and then the boost begun to spike and cut out. Short result was a trip back to the company who mapped it and as a short term fix a bleed valve was installed to curtail the boost and bring it back down to 1.3bar where it has sat since. I've not had the time to go back and leave my car there to get it resolved plus I've also got new parts to install and map up again so this will no doubt be resolved.
To answer the original poster, no I do not regret having my car mapped but please be aware that it can have a knock on effect on other parts.
Regards

I bought my car FROM the mapper, and it hasn't missed a beat in two years.
It was effectively an R&D car for the Twin Scroll cars when they first came out and a lot of people have benefitted from the results that it gave (to their own cars) and also the performance parts that it 'gave birth' to.
I have been back to the mapper to add my own upgrades and have never been unhappy with the results.
