I owned a 20v Turbo prior to buying the scooby. From a rolling start, they are very quick all the way upto 155mph. From a standing start, i'd agree, its very difficult to put the power down.
I sold mine on, as the timing belt was due, the cheapest quote i got was £750 inc.

It was a toss up between a Fiat coupe and an Alfa GTVV6.... the alfa won purely because of the great v6 engine.... which then went on to destroy itself and the car was no more!

they have a great engine its the rst of the car that lets these down. if they spent more time and money on the susspension and breaks the car would be a much better package. the 5 pot lump with 20 valves is a good'n and easilly modded too.

love the photoshop
they are FIAT and they are sh^t
id have more fun screaming the pipercross induction on ma old 1.25 mk5 Fiesta.
there were a few 400-500 BHP coupes at TOTB6 but i dont think one could get off the line properly on the handling circuit and it seemed like waitin for ever for them to come back in , so i could see a proper car like the scooby clinic sc450 which was waitin
you can make any car beat a scooby, it s not all about power sometimes

Yeah, clearly they are rubbish....which is why they are a 5 star Evo car. I can see a fiesta with a pipercross being right up their with the iconic cars
Or could it be you know nothing?

Aren't they on the same floorplan as the Tipo?
If so, they can't be too far off the size of a Lancia Delta - hmmm, 20v Turbo engine in an Integrale as a project for someone perhaps?
Got to admit I like the Fiat - I nearly bought one before I got the scoob. Guy at work had one and was always complaining how easily the body sides were marked in car parks and how hard it was to fix because of those swage lines - but then, the scoob doors are made from chocolate-wrapper tin foil!

Hello from the FCCUK,
We have noticed this thread over on the Fiat Coupe UK forum with some interest. I must say that with the exception of a few individuals, I am quite impressed with the comments here as they are both well informed and quite positive.
I own a 20VT and when I was looking into buying one, I also looked into buying a WRX or STi instead. The main positive points of the Scoob were its handling and traction, parts and mods availabilty and the the sound of the boxer engine with its unequal length intakes. The downside was its large running costs, very poor MPG and IMHO, the image of the Impreza is suffering very badly with so many idiots now buying them and driving like complete *****. The older models have also aged quite badly in terms of looks and the interior isn't exactly pretty.
The advantages of the Coupe are its rarity and looks (you get attention all the time), its performance per pound, the sound of the 5-pot engine, the interior is gorgeous and you feel as though you're driving something that little bit special. The engine is also uprated quite easily to 300bhp+ with a turbo upgrade, FMIC, fuel pump upgrade and remap. You also get Brembo's as standard on the 20VT's.
The downside to the Coupe is that as standard, it has a quite an understeer led balance and you can feel the weight slung over the front axles. Build quality on the whole is actually pretty good, but the electrics are suspect. Running costs are very dependent on how well the car has been looked after. As long as you keep on top of the regular maintenance (regular fluid level checks, etc), costs are very reasonable if you stick with the aforementioned Motormech or Powerfiat, etc. with full timing belt changes costing from £400 from these guys. A poorly maintained Coupe can end up being very expensive. Fuel consumption is actually very good. Doing my usual commute i get around 350miles to less than 60litres. Admittedly, this is keeping it off boost but does include a fair bit of stop/start urban driving. The cars with the 6sp. box can get over 500miles to a tank during motorway driving at a constant 70 - 80mph.
After weighing up the various, I ended up plumping for the Coupe. The biggest deciding factor for me was the negative image that Impreza's seem to be gaining with each passing day. The Coupe to me, just seemed so much more classier.
Nice forum guys!
P.S. pimmo2000's photochop is genius!

Good post Dennis
I came from a 20VT to a Classic Scoob and don't regret it one bit.
As you've pointed out, one problem about owning a scoob is the image. With early Imprezas going for pennies these days they're falling into the "pipercross induction on an old 1.25 mk5 Fiesta" brigade
I have to say I haven't noticed that much difference in mpg between my Scoob and my old 20VT.
With a scoob or a coupe its definately a Love or Hate thing, I happen to like both

WTF the coupe does not have the 1.8T VW engine in it. It has a Fiat 5 cylinder engine (no relation to any other 5 pot be it Audi or Volvo/ford).
You are thinking because it is 20V it is a VAG unit but it isn't. You are a fool.

wicked little post going on here!
i have a 20vt, and kept up with a few scoobies...not bad for a girl either lol
good to see that its not to everyones taste! if we all like the same cars, then no1 would be differant, we would be driving round in the exactly the same looking cars! what would be the point in that?!
copues are awesum cars

I was the owner of one of the Coupes at TOTB6 (the blue one, in case you're interested)
You're right - it was a git to get off the line, but once roilling its pretty good. FWD is always going to be trounced by 4WD on a quarter mile, but I posted a 12.85, so not too shabby. Top speed was 158 at the mile marker - not bad for 400bhp.
In handling, I came second in class with a 41.02 second run, which while slower than the fastest 4WD runners, its still faster than lots of the 4WD class. I have about £500 of handling mods, so nothing too extreme.
The main difference with the Coupes at TOTB is the fact that they're all everyday cars. Mine has over 30,000 more miles on it than when it was at TOTB5 last year. Not many cars on Sunday could claim to be true everyday road cars, including many of the Scoobs.
The best bhp from a Coupe so far is just over 600, so we're still quite a way behind the tuning potential of the Subarus - I guess you're at 800+ now?
Clearly the Impreza and the Coupe are very different cars, but its great to come across a one-make forum that (mostly) recognises that there are other quick cars out there too. There's always going to be extreme opinions (no different on our forum, where Imprezas are either liked or hated). We ought to try and join up at a trackday so we can show you just how our little Italian scrabble-wagons can hold their heads up against newer 4WD machinery - you got any trackdays organised?
BTW - as mentioned above - that Coupe Transformer Photoshop is pure genius

Love the Fiat Coupe it's a true design classic and well ahead of it's time. Probably the only decent thing Bangle has ever designed.
I'd love to own a 'Plus' one day if the right car and moment came along.
I wonder why some people on here have to slag off a car they clearly know nothing about?

coupe turbo
Sorry to jump in so late. Im in the car sales game and have driven numerous cars to date. As a car i think they are stunning to look at and sound superb.
The only draw back is that their not the most reliable and cost a fortune when they go wrong. Pound 4 pound a bit of a bargain. Not as quick as my current impreza, never the less good all round car.
Regards Dan

There are a few comments about chavs owning scoobys, unfortunately with the price that they can now be picked up for this can not be helped. Fortunately there does not seem to be too many of that flavour of owners on this site as I too get upset at being branded the same as them.

Im sorry I don't remember saying a Fiesta was an iconic car maybe best handling supermini for years is as close as it gets. Little Fiesta was my first car (like most of us start out as kids)
and you have no way of knowing what I know and don't, what I do know is that I don't claim to know everything about cars just because I read EVO magazine and secondly I know that FIAT are not very reliable shall we say, thats what I was refering too.
But clearly you cannot have an opinion on Scoobynet without some wise **** trying to criticise it.

and about the pipercross induction on an old 1.25 mk5 Fiesta" brigade , we both know what your suggesting and im further from that than you think.
later when I dropped a 1.7 puma engine into it yes it had the pipercross , running just short of 160bhp my dad helped me of course being a mechanic for nearly 50 years now, at the time it was a nice motor to drive. im not a chav mate who races round town 100 mph for fun ( which we both know you were suggesting), i like motorsport and learning mechanics making cars go quicker than normal like we all do

Interesting post Dennis, good to have your input.
What turbo is std on the Coupe, and what do peeps generaly use when upgrading ?
Have always respected the Coupe. Had a 2.2 Vtec Prelede for 8 years and noticed on a couple of mag tests that the coupe would come out on tops (both handled well - the Fiat was quicker though ).
If you're getting 350 miles on the tank of any of these cars, your "driving style" is clearly different/better than mine !
Re scooby image - i like the fact everyone says "you've got one of they fleeing machines that are "like" rally cars".

Standard turbo on the 20VT is a Garrett TB28 which runs at 1.0bar or 1.2bar on overboost with the standard EBV. A lot of owners have ditched the EBV for a manual PRV with it permanently set to 1.2bar and then had their ECU chipped. A standard 20VT running this setup will expect to push out around 250 - 260bhp. Decent boost comes in around 2250 - 2500rpm, builds up and then tails off after 5500rpm so there isn't much point ragging it to the 7000rpm redline. Also, due to only having a 270 degree journal bearing, it doesn't like being subjected to the lack of back pressure that a decat brings.
Owners generally go for two schools of thought with turbo upgrading. 360 degree journal bearing models such as a GTi-R hybrid/Superspool/Ultraspool are a direct replacement. They spool up very quickly and give huge amounts of midrange punch, but tail off towards the redline just like the standard turbo (although not as severely). Set up correctly, they give around 280 - 300bhp depending on mapping etc. The other way is to spec a roller bearing turbo such as a GT28R or GT28RS (or similar), but these require a little fettling to fit, mainly due to the standard downpipe not being able to mate up with the turbo flange. These turbo's take a little more effort to spool up, but they produce good power (290 - 330bhp) all the way to the redline and some owners prefer the more linear delivery they give.
In both cases, owners are advised to ditch the standard side mount intercooler and upgrade to a good quality front mount.
