It could be worse, you could have been born in the early 1900's and been named after a popular silver screen actor.
40 years on and you are the 'red nosed reindeer'
Rudolf Valentino.
My Kids are Kyle (old family Name- my choice) and Oliver (wifes 'trendy choice).
If a power name has to have P and T in it, what about:
Pteranodon

You not only miss my point, you also further slide down my "worth knowing" scale with each post you make.
I know two Poppys - one a public school educated girl of 28 who works in TV and should really be a model, the other a middle aged horse lover who goes out of her way to help others and lets wife ride her thoroughbred for next to nothing.
You are yet another sad cretin who judges people by the most stupid means.
Have you done anything interesting in life?
Are you actually worth knowing?
Is a desperate crawl up the social ladder all that matters to you?
I can guess the answers already.

Mat,
Sorry, but it appears you are missing the point.
Whether or not you know two "worthy" Poppys is largely irrelevant. Having an understanding of general perception is somewhat more important.
Unless, of course, you expect your child never to move outwith your immediate circle of associates.

It's great you know some people called Poppy however they arent children and thus irrelevant in terms of this 'debate'.
It's a fact that people are judged by their names, children more so than adults whether it's sad or not is again, totally irrelevant. It's a fact, learn to live with it. I've neither supported or condemned it, to do so would be like starting a campaign against earthquakes ie it would make sod all difference.
As for your other questions and the insult, frankly they are beneath contempt.
Oh and have a nice day!

A name will no more hamper a childs/adults prospects in life than say having Brown or Blonde hair. How a child is brought up, to know right & wrong, good manners and a healthy enviroment as well as being able to offer a good education is far more important to a childs prospect than the name you give them.
Having a University education means sh*t (As no Wayne would ever get into your University

Devildog - utterly beyond help.
If you think a name is so important, then so be it. You languish in your World where "what other people think" is so important. Make sure you don't ever have fun - you might look silly.
Ignore Roger Federer when he asks if you want some tennis tips, laugh at Kelly Slater when he offers you surfing lessons, mock Lewis Hamiltons and his F1 antics, sneer at Gordon Ramsay's cooking efforts, snigger at Anita Roddick's silly little chain of shops, giggle at Kevin Spacey's acting skills - All names that I'd hardly consider great but hey, they've all managed.
InFractMe - Thanks for confirmation. My pet labrador has more interesting points of view than yours.

). Ask Alan Sugar, Richard Branson etc which University they went to?

I agree though that upbringing is far more important- however people dishing out these 'crap' names aren't very likely to provide a good one if they can't even get the naming of the child right. I won't even get into demographics.
One of the stupidest things I've ever read is saying that a University education 'means sh*t' followed by a couple of names of famous success stories. It actually means rather a lot and opens doors that would remain firmly shut without one........

Just imagine the Arch Bishop of Cantebury babbling away...,
"So, Charles, do you take this lady to be your lawfully married wife until death do you part"?
"I do, your holyness"
"And you, Chantrel Britney Chardonnay Shiraz, do you take this jug eared freak to be your lawfully wedded husband until death do you part?
"Yeah but no but yeah but"

True to form Mat, and exactly the response anticipated.
Look, let me make it simple for you because you are allowing your own preconceptions to cloud your interpretation of my post. What I think personally is completely irrelevant. This isn't about my opinion. Personally I don't give a rats *** what you call your kids.
It is, however, a harsh reality of life in the 21st Century that what other people think will affect their attitude.
If you give you your child a name associated with either end of the social spectrum, or indeed something contrived, then that child will experience prejudice, preconception (just like that you have applied to my post) and stereotyping by those who do not associate with those sections of society. Its wrong, but, hey, it happens, and it should be your responsibility as a parent to ensure you don't cripple your child's wider social acceptance by giving it a name that will be met with such prejudices.
And please, explain by what manner having a wider understanding of the realities of life means I am unable to have fun?
And while you are at it, quite what is so wrong with Roger, Kelly, Lewis, Gordon, Kevin or Anita is beyond me.
It iss interesting, however, that you have somewhat childishly insulted certain posters on his thread who happen to disagree with your point of view on naming convention and yet have presumed to offer your own negative opinion on the list of names in my paragraph above.
Its a funny old world, eh?

Sorry, it appears I have to explain myself as you have now, for the second time, resorted to that age old smoke screen of patronisation in order to hide the fact that you don't understand.
You have stated several times that "what people think" is of great importance to you and others. Using none too complex assumptions, these people are the type who don't like to be made to look silly. These people are also not a lot of fun because fun often involves the shock horror risk of personal humiliation.
You have also decided that a number of names are Chav. I stated a number of names that aren't exactly ones I'd ever consider choosing but have not "branded them" as I don't think it matters one bit what "class" a name lends itself to.
You are therefore also judging certain names and therefore a complete hypocrite.
Now you can dissect this as carefully as you dissected my last post, and come back with what you think are a number of witty put downs.
However, the simple fact is that you have made a fool of yourself, names don't matter and are simply open to personal opinion.
"What others think" is only of interest to bores.

So you have a child called Jordan, and another called (Whatever you deem to be a prospect inducing name) and both are up for the lead role in the School Christmas play. By your assumptions, the teacher would never pick little Jordan for the lead role just because they are called Jordan. Resigning the poor kid to playing the Tree instead ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

I'm quite surprised that this idea that names affect perceptions is controversial - it seems to me to be obviously true to a degree. Just like hair, size, weight, accent all affect perceptions.
Take Adolf as an extreme example. Calling your child Adolf wouldn't make him a psycho, but it would come with a bit of baggage, surely?
There are differences of opinion about which names carry what baggage of course.

Assumption is a very dangerous thing. Please don't presume to know me in any way, shape, or form. If you did, you would perhaps understand that the last thing I have any concern with is what people think about me.
The irony of your stereotyping me on the basis of a passing contact, whilst at the same time refuting that such stereotyping exists based upon a given name has not escaped me, nor, I suspect, others posting on this thread

Well one thing is certain Devildog, unless you are also InfractMe, then you aren't the best when it comes to realising who a post is directed at.
Which is this case, wasn't you.

we called out little girl Holly, which was on our list, as she arrived eary, just before Christmas. Trouble is, if you look the meaning up, it says something like: British. Green tree. Dead interesting that one.
It's more common than I thought, but gets a lot of good comments

So, let me get this straight, you post after me having previously responded to infractme's post, you make reference to elements of my post (the fun comment), and yet your comments were directed at, presumably, infractme?
Apologies for not being psychic

Well it would appear that you and InfractMe have carbon copy opinions so I guess it got a little "foggy" when I replied.
Suppose the posts applies to you too but it was aimed at InfractMe.

Just to clarify I wasn't responding to the guy from the West Country as sadly I don't think he has the ability or perhaps will to reply in a cogent fashion.
I don't know if this will help but in case he doesn't 'get it' the point is 'you don't get it'.

It really isn't.
Beesides, the only people that are thick enough to judge you by your name, aren't exactly going to have any bearing on your success/lack of any way, as invariably, they are going to be so lowly as to have no bearing on your standing.

Judgements about an individual are made on all kinds of criteria, name being one of them.
