Unless you have a boost gauge it's really hard to say when a turbo 'kicks in' as each persons idea of a shove in the pants is different..!

Hence the reason why people normally quote 1bar @ ???? in 4th for instance. For those that don't know this, you stick the car in 4th and from about 2k floor the throttle. The point at which 1 bar is reached is a meaningful reference and with a fully heated exhaust/turbo, anything hitting 1 bar at 3k or less is considered very responsive.

The fact that you may hear the turbo whining (spooling) does not indicate that it is making any meaningful boost..! Which is what a few people on this thread are referring to IMHO..!

Precisely! Without a boost gauge, it's impossible to tell!

i think people comment on different turbo's because of what they have read but dont have any real experience of what the td05 16g is really like.
i think the 18g and 20g are going to be quite laggy but the smaller 16g once decatted does spool up alot quicker than people say, alot of people comment on the td05 16g having never owned one and only read they are a bit laggy.
having said that 1800/2000rpm is a bit optimistic, you can hear the turbo spooling from 1800rpm but mine isnt on boost that early.

Its unlikely for a 16g to reach 1bar boost much lower than 2800/3000revs, even on the best of cars

Interesting test, may give that a whirl. I have a boost gauge but am usually too preoccupied driving to notice too much to be frank. Found it quite tricky when I was out with Andy F to drive at certain speeds/boost. Good fun though of course

Would be better if you could evaluate these things after driving, what kind of software would you need for that I wonder?
