well to put it simple i get around 50 miles for every £10 and thats a mix of steady driving and booting it.

Mine is running 351bhp now, thats a full turbo back zorst and decat, Blitz induction kit, Walbro fuel pump and an Ecutec remap. It runs 1.5 bar max boost.

Do not just up your boost to get more power, the fueling may not be there to match it. The only safe way is remapping, which over 330ish you`ll be advised to fit the Walbro too

EVO's are great cars but as said above, My preference is because of the Scooby scene, better to live with day to day, cheaper and JDM's are much closer to performance.

I've driven a few EVO's on the road and track, handling is awesome

The downside the EVO never gave me the same feedback as the Scoob, never sure how much grip was used or left after a corner to which degree, seven years on with the Scoob and I'm still alive, which may not have been the case with the EVO

I would change my scoob for an evo but i would only settle for an FQ version and an 8 at that. I couldn't go back to a 5 speed box now. Evos are fantastic cars and i would love to own one but realistically as others have said servicing and insurance is allot more and i'm not willing to pay the extra.

As a comparison i'm 26 and the STI 8 is just over the £500 per year to insure. I couldn't get a quote under 1k for an evo when i looked at buying one in April this year. Hence my scoob purchase.

I love the STI 8 and i'm very happy with it.... out of the box its lacking in power but Andy Forrest will sort that out for me shortly and i expect to keep it for a minimum of another 18mths.

Your evo looks very nice btw.

dont worry i know all about boost/fuel.the e7,s are ok upto 1.4bar and have spoken to a few e7 owners how run this no probs but i will get it hooked up to a wide band to make sure its not lean at top end.if i want to go more than that then yes i will go for a ecutek or powe fc and fuel pump.i had simon norris map and install a power fc to my e4 but that could only run 1.4 as the pistons arent as good. as the later evo,s.

Ah thats all good then I`ve seen plenty of posts before on here and MLR where people think wacking the boost up will be enough to get them great power and a happier life, which isnt always the case

After decatting my 6, my power was limited to 322bhp and only 1bar as it started running too lean, not to mention the horrendous fuel cuts in colder weather at only 1.2 bar!!!! Hence the fuel pump then remap

Never tried an EVO 7 but had a go in a 5, quicker then my UK Turbo but not as special to drive, I love the sound the Subaru makes on load!! The EVO 5 felt to normal and not as special to drive...........and the Scooby looks good in Green with Gold wheels!!!

A UK 2001 Scoob would have 265hp or 300 with a Prodrive Performance Pack. A Jap 2001 would have 280-300hp depending on how extravagant the wee Japanese ECU tweaker was.

2001 WRX has about 220hp, but missing A LOT of goodies.....gearbox, suspension, etc, etc.


Your EVO was owned by someone on here. Can't remember his name, but it's a nice car.

Personally, I'm not about all out performance. I just want a car that I enjoy driving.

Are 260s cheaper to insure being UK cars? If they are based on VIIIs and some mild tweaking sees 300 without much trouble (according to what I've read).

Wouldn't bother me if it didn't have AYC as that just increases service interval and reduces service costs.

I'm not buying a new car for maybe as much as until the new year so I assume £12k in January should get me a decent 03 STI or a 260 or even a full beans evo depending on my running budget.

I'd like to own one just to say I've had one. I'd like to make my own choice over which I truly feel suits me.

I'm not sure if I'd ever want to own an Evo over my Impreza, I do like Evo's a lot but the Impreza has just been something I've wanted since I was about 8 years old, and the Evo to this day - having driven several Imprezas and Evos - still just doesn't have the same effect on me. If anything was to lure me away it would more likely be a nice R32 GTR or a Supra

Having said that, the one Evo that could tempt me away would be one of these buggers, in this colour scheme too

Love both cars, owners of either car are one of the same having the same interests in life, i certainly don't go with this "them and us" attitude, if i see an evo driver on the road i always look and think great choice of car mate.

Could i live without that deep flat four rumble though this and the expected running costs along with the large scooby community is what swayed me, some great times are had on the regular local meets.

I've always thought the Evo 6 is one of the best lOOking cars ever. So mean. When i got some money together i knew i could get one, even a TME, but went for another Subaru.

I'm sure i'll have an Evo one day, but for me i'm keeping the STi.

I had decided to buy an evo 8 right up until I sat in an MR FQ 320 for a test run. Great looking car but what a nightmare to sit in at speeds up to 70 on normal roads, very bumpy and twitchy, felt like it wanted to be booted relentlessly, did not sound very good unless it was being caned and boy was I disappointed, had my heart set on one of these

The main issue was that I am a car enthusiast who actually drives the car I am enthusiastic about, I don't park it in the drive or garage and wait for the sunshine and then drive it 5 miles before cleaning it and then storing it again for a month. No point in this for me

Now I'm not having a go at people who do this, I just don't see the point of having a cracking car but worrying about putting miles on it Buy it.... drive it.... love it

Anyway tried the Sti and thought wow this is comfortable at any speed, sounds great and goes like stink to Ended up buying my current 05 STi with PPP and it is the business, using it every day, good for the golf gear to, what a blend of practicality, comfort and ballistic missile attributes.......... awesome

Still love the evo's though and may yet buy a 300 but they are in no way as pleasant to use as the scooby's are and that is their downfall for me, that is also why top gear chose the scoob over the evo.... how many people only but a car to use for track days or blasting around some country roads, not that many surely. I don't think that an fq 300 would be much quicker than my STi PPP on normal roads, etc. Only way to see the real differences in these cars is in tests like that on the stig lap times on top gear where a quality racing driver does several laps in them for comparison and with the STi hitting 1.30.1 vs 1.28.9 for the evo it tells you that the evo is the better track weapon but then they are both faster than an M3 and a S4 so that really tells you how good they are.

had an evo 8 260 for 6 months, new clutch, gearbox rebuild etc. It spent more time in the garage. Never again for me. Never had a problem with a scoob

Having owned 3 Imprezas I had enough opportunities to get an Evo instead but stuck with the scoobs. I personally find that they are overpriced second hand for what you get with nothing to justify the greater price when compared to the Impreza market but maybe that's just me. As for the attention bit I get an awful lot of people staring at mine, normally with big smiles and nudging their friends to get them to look too. I don't see an Evo getting any more attantion to be honest if that's what floats your boat.

Nothing ever breaks on mine unless I drive them through something etc, brilliantly reliable and tough as old boots so far for me.

Also apart from the Bugatti Veyron's exhaust note (SEXEH), nothing else really beats the boxer burble for me .

The MY05 STI and VIII MR Evo onwards are very similar in terms of braking, grip, cornering etc that the differences are only noticed if you are driving like a suicidal maniac. In some ways the STI is better because of predictability, in other ways the Evo is better because of the steering feel etc. Personally I love the AYC on my (tuned) IX FQ340. However, I couldn't live with the short gearing of the top (5th gear) on a IX GT as a daily driver.

The later Scoobies with the 2.5 have a real kick of torque if tuned, but the engine is a bit delicate. The 2.0 Evo motor is stronger and has just as wide a power band as the 2.5 Scooby (twin scroll short manifold), and comes with a much better turbo and intercooler from the factory. With a few hundred pounds spent an VIII MR or IX FQ can be in the 380-400 BHP range with reliability.

The IX MIVEC actually gets the fuel economy very close to the Scooby. Overall the Scooby is a better daily driver, but as a road car I really think the bargain of the lot for a fun daily driver that is easy to live with and maintain is a MY06 WRX Euro import for £14k, tuned with respect to its weak gearbox and engine with say 350 BHP/310 lbft on STI TMIC & turbo, quiet exhaust, fuel pump, remap. This gives it a similar power to weight ratio as a new RS4 or M3 for less than a third of the cost. It is as subtle as Scoobies get, and would be a nice choice. The other option I consider is a MY05 STI with a forged 2.5 engine swap and MD321 to run 450/450+, or a MY06 STI with piston swap and the same.

Trouble is once you've had either a Scooby or an Evo it is difficult to know what to follow it with.

I am a member on there and have been for a couple of years now. Whne I 1st joined I had a Saxo and I got a fair bit of ribbing for that That was because I was looking at getting an Evo at the time.

I like the Evo's and I always fancied a 4 but a 5 or 6 would of been just I went out in an Evo II and was quite impressed with the power (this was before I got my 1st scoob). But, because of the expensive servicing and the insurance is more than double for me
So for the time being, I am happy with what I got and maybe later on in life if I have the cash, I might go to the darkside

The M3 was useless in the wet or the snow, and in the dry the brakes wilted far too quickly. I was fed up with it after a month or two and sold it after six months. I've fancied a 996TT, but I'm not really sure it is worth the money to me.

My boyfriend used to have an Evo 5, got to drive both the EVO and the Scooby - much prefer driving the Scooby, I just think they have more about them. But have to admit the EVO was a really nice car to drive.

Always loved Evo's , come close a few times to bagging myself a 6, but I never did ! As it is I'm on my second scoob now , had a UK Turbo for 6 years from new & loved it , now I've got a JDM STi & do you know what , although it's quicker , handles better , in fact probably does everything better , I miss the flat 4 burble of my classic, I'm yet to turn the car around and go back through a tunnel just to hear the rumble again ( Sad I know but...) I've even had a young lad ask we if it's a real one, as it doesn't sound like a normal scoob!!
In a perfect world I'd have a couple of Evo's , probably a TME & an FQ360 & a couple of scoobs, A 22b & mine with a burble & 500 bhp.
Anyway I love all the rally reps , in fact I respect everyone who takes a pride in their cars ,whatever they drive , like minded people sharing a passion..Excellent
