Had 5 scoobs, and one extremely nice Evo 8.
I really like both, and the new STi's are very nice and much more practical but I would never choose the scoob over Evo if they were sat in front of me.
I didn't take to it at first, but loved it every time I drove it after I figured it out. It just feels so strong. You dont get the same kick as the power is linear, so that was a bit of a downside.
They are still quite rare, and the scoob image has been a long time tarnished by all the tatty ones with stickers all over them.

I sold my modified Bug STI 380bhpish 3 months ago and got myself a standard JDM EVO 9.
The two cars share a lot in common but are two completly different animals. The STI was a brute of a car and i loved it, however the evo despite having a 100bhp disadvantage still chills my spine when i drive it. The EVO gets alot of attention even without a loud exhaust that the subaru had, it's nice to even have bikers giving you a wave or nod of appreciation
Now just to get the EVO up to my old subarus power, which incidently wont involve fmic, turbos etc etc, it will merely consitute a fuel pump, exhaust system and remap for 390 (SUB £1500) or an additional boost controller to take it over 400

I think the Evo is far better looking, but it is the servicing costs that put me off. I have never driven one but was not that impressed with the interior when i sat in one (that coming from a subaru driver )
I am on my second Impreza now. It would have to be a very special car for me to replace my P1, from what i have heard the Evo is special but my wife would kill me at the cost of the thing. I think the Subaru is better value all round for what you get.

by what i have read so far alot of you agree that putting aside servicing cost and comfort and looking at the two cars as what they are made for (performance) the evo is the better performace car.would that be fair to say?

One of each here and I much prefer the Scoob, with the Evo I feel as though the car is driving me not me driving the car (plus this forum is tons better than the MLR!)

As far as I am concerned the driver is the most important element . You can also get ugly early dog Evo's cheap too. Insuring either cheaply for a chav is another story altogether . As for there being far more Imprezas than Evos it goes to show that Subaru really got it right with the Impreza and if they were **** poor unreliable cars they wouldn't have have such a huge following over here . Evo's would too if they weren't overpriced.

This is an VERY old chestnut and we allways lose anyway
IMHO Yes and No "They" usually the compare "UKPPP's" scoobs to FQ's300 or FQ330's , maybe closer matches, the STi JDM to a FQ330 and a Spec C to a Fq360

i'm on my third scooby now, but if i had the time to think about it when i bought this one i think i may have dipped my toe into the darkside pool
i love the whole rally/jap thing and if i could ever afford one i'd love a skyline too
on the face of it evo's are quicker out the box, can get silly power for not alot of outlay and from the 5 onwards look great.
i do also like the evo mentality when it comes to pricing their cars, tommi mak is what 10k? (don't flame me here, haven't been looking recently!!) for a 99/00 car? you'd pay half that for a scooby. it seems they set a high price for these cars, everyone in the evo scene nods their head and goes along with it and it keeps the residuals high.
not like us lot that devalue the hell out of the cars then moan they're not worth alot just my view on it anyway
would i prefer an evo? hmmmm, don't know. would i like to have one? hell yes

I really wanted an EVO 6 (mainly as I couldn't stretch to the EVO 7 I really really wanted). In Ireland, you do see more Scoobys than EVO's, but I don't think there is that much in it as purchase price for both is relatively much higher than the UK, and insurance is much more prohibitive here.
There seems to be a few 'chav' types in EVO 5/6's here, just as many as may be in Scoobys. I still really like the later EVO's, but now I've got it I'm really into my WRX PPP - next year when I almost certainly start looking to change again, I'll look at EVO 7/8's and MY 03/04 STI's, but if my Scooby carries on making me happy (it's my daily transport) in both performance and running costs I'll start with looking at STI's.

I had an Evo 7 a couple of years back, it was modded to about 400bhp and had track suspension (too firm). It was ballistic going going flat out but poor in stop start traffic. Compared to the JDM Blob Eye I now have the power delivery on both cars is very similar as is the noise. Standard performance on both cars is about similar. Where the Impreza is better is the slow mundane stuff like pootling about and running costs. Dynamically the Evo has the edge but as an all round packge the Impreza is the better one.

I even had a UK300 owner stop and ask me what make of car my Evo 6 was!!!
Around my way the young guys have cottoned on to the cheapness of the Impreza and I can hear the Subaru exhaust note being ragged past my house every single day time and time again......believe me, you lose the love for that once beautiful sound
So far, in my 1st year of ownership, I`ve found the Evo to be almost exactly the same in running costs as all my cars get things like oil changes every 3 months regardless, my insurance is only £625 fully comp (cheaper than my Impreza ever was!!) and even though I fill up more often with fuel, I have a much smaller tank (approx £38 to fill-up).

All I can say is, in a lot of respects I miss my Scooby, the sound, and the ride mainly. The Tommi is a right bugger to drive at slow speeds. The ride is awful hard! I so miss the sound of the Flat 4 compared to the in-line 4 too!
0-60 does not seem a lot different to the Scoob either, but where the EVO wins is at 60-100, seems much quicker and so much more responsive. Handling wise, the Evo wins hands down, I am not the best driver in the world by far, but it gives you so much confidence. The breaks on the EVO are the best I've ever had on any car - I can go from 0-60 and back to zero in six and a half seconds. Fuel economy seems to about 15 to 20 MPG. Not good! Look wise, I love the hardcore looks of my Tommi compared to my blob eye, plus it turns heads everywhere to boot!
Will I ever go back to a Scooby, yes I think I will! Scoobs are by far better all rounders than a EVO, and are much better value also.
Mark.
BTW, when I feel really b rave, I wear my scooby WRT shirt whilst driving the TME

I was faced with the choice when i could have traded in the scooby a couple of months ago and personally i couldnt see to much of a difference to justify the cost difference tbh. Ive played with an evo 320 and it wasnt that much faster in a straight line and, although i was behind, he wasnt getting away around the corners either. All comes down to price and choice.
With regard to the scoobies image, i couldnt careless if some chave could afford one. I think the main problem comes from the drivers who are convinced that theyre little tin car is a ferrari slayer or porsche beater. Bit like saying your primark suit lasts longer then a versace, maybe it does, but who cares?

Great post this .
I'm on my second scoob but looked at Evo's before buying the second scoob. My car is a daily drive to work and I do approx 200 - 250 miles a week which basically ruled the Evo out because of running costs. On my wages I couldn't afford to run the Evo. Both cars are great at what they do, some love Scoobs others love Evo's, personally I love both.
The only negative thing I can say about Evo owners is that quite a few of them think they are better than your average Scooby owner. I've been to many joint meets and most of the Evo owners look down their noses at the Scooby owners, which I find disappointing cause I love both cars .
In an ideal world I'd have a Evo 6 TME in black and a 22B .
Wolfie (all my opinion)

Mine '02 STI Prodrive Edition in blue/black mica....
My boss hated me having it so he bought an Evo 8 FQ 330 (?) in black, exactly 1 year later.
Drove it once and loved it's low down torque even with a 5-speed box, but low speed ride was awful.
Loved it's silver wheels and aggresive looks tho'.
Boss hated the silly small fuel tank and low speed ride .... and that it cost £4.5K more
Conclusion I still have mine and modded it....
After two clutches and two flywheels he gave it back and told them to shove it, wasn't that fussed to keep it. He should have bought a Scoob....
Dunx
P.S. TME + 22B would do me, and a new double garage !

Mt first jap car was an Sti version 1 and I loved it to bits, a few years later I went ot a nearly new EVO6 and it as a god damn money pit:
Brake went, then the laquer peeld off the calipers, Wheels bubbled, AYC pump went and then the diff went, all in all £5k's worth of Warranty work and this was on a car that had done just 10k miles.
I now have a sti-6 RA limited and love it's rawness, feels quicker to 100 than the EVO6.
What I would say about the evo is that it pulled stong from 60-100 (like somone said in an earlier post).
You do feel very tuned to the road and it is a more 'special' driving experience until the AYC kicks in and you think 'sod that'! It never inspired me with confidence, perhaps I just didn't drive it correctly.
I would love an MR 360 jobie plus a Spec C RA.

In the past i owned an MY99 Classic Impreza which was a UK spec car which i thoroughly enjoyed, i had always wanted an Evo so i saved up a bit more cash and went out and bought an Evo 6 GSR and i never regretted that decision one bit. Ive always been into the classic shapes of both the Evo and Impreza as i think the Evo 6 looks far more aggressive than the later models and the classic Impreza is basically what you associate with subaru IMO. The Evo is a much harder ride as the supspension seems a lot stiffer so you will feel virtually every bump on the road.
The main differences i found between both cars are as follows.
1. The build quality of the Evo in my experience was far better than the Subaru, the panels seemed thicker, the paint seemed to be put on a lot thicker too as i got far less noticeable stone chips and small dents with the Evo when covering the same roads at similar speeds. The Subaru interior felt cheap to me with a lot of plastic that wasn`t very well put together with small vibration rattles here and their when you was driving, the Evo just felt a lot better put together than the Subaru.
2. They both drive totally differently, the Evo is more refined and at times its easy not to realise what speed you are doing especially when the last car you drove was a Subaru because of the way the power is delivered differently which was the first thing i noticed. In the Subaru you feel as though you are doing 60 mph if you know what i mean because of things like the distinct engine notes and exhaust sound, the Evo is a lot quieter and smoother and they don`t half pull like a train and its hard sometimes to gauge your speed unless your constantly looking at the speedo compared to an Impreza.
They are both great cars that have different driving experiences, the Subaru feels more raw where as the Evo is a lot smoother and seems to be built to a better quality. Those previous comparisons are between a classic Impreza and an Evo 6 as they are the models i liked best from both ranges. I like both brands, if only you could put the Subaru burble and engine music into an Evo because in my opinion you would have the perfect car.

Agree with Rob_Imprezza99,
I too am a fan of classic cars, they just don't make em like they used to. One of the first rally type cars I ever set my eyes on were a pair of Evo 6's parked outside our office, owned by the two directors.
Since then I test drove an Evo 8 and was very impressed however I went for the scooby simply down to personal preference - I like the raw and aggressive stance the scoobies have over the Evo's, which are more like stealth bombers, you don't really notice them until they tear past you!
I ended up buying a newage impreza however I think even the hawkeye's are a rare beast, they have bag's of character and an overall aggressive look plus they are very confidence inspiring, especially when pushed very hard (as I found out at a recent day to Prodrive in Warwick).
Each to their own I guess, I may well try an Evo out in the future but the running costs put me off for the time being.

Very intersting thread after owning my scoob! I do love my TME, it really is $hite to drive around town, but wakes up after about 80 MPH, the torque in the thing is so much better than my WRX PPP. However, really don't know how long I can put up with it as a day to day car - because it's so frustating at low speeds. THERE WILL COME A TIME WHEN I WILL REVERT BACK TO A SCOOBY I'm sure!!!!!

Anyway.
I have had both and the STi had more character, sounded much better. The EVO was so much more capable. Did not like the first few EVO8 so went for the STi, and spent a lot of time wondering if I should have waited for the FQ series.
Thing I did notice about the STi, it was cheaper to run.

If I could afford both I would have both, but I personally prefer a car which YOU drive, not one that drives you . I like my classic still and like knowing that all the bad driving is being carried out by me and not a computer .
