Not true. I have top 3 on search in Google, Yahoo, MSN etc for various keywords. I've targetted a less obvious audience with Adwords without being too obscure and wasting clicks.

If you're canny with your ads and do what they say in the on-line courses you can hammer your cost per click and save buckets of cash.
I figure the basic theory is that for Google to work it needs the sites/ adverts associated with each search to be relevant, If you're not relevant (i.e. not generating enough clicks) then they push your cost per click sky high so that you either a) become more relevant fast or b) pay through the nose for the privelidge of being irrelevant.
If anyone else is considering this, don't waste money on the books trying to tell you how to do it better/ cheaper etc. Just work your way through the online Learning Centre - it tells you absolutely everything you need to know.
I would also disagree strongly with the argument that it only works if you're niche. I am 100% not niche so the competition for higher rankings on normal searches is astronomical. The only solution is the chance to be more clever with my adverts and guarantee front page each time. And it's really not that hard, or expensive, to do.
