I guess you haven't played the Surfs Up demo then

It's Sega Rally. It does what it says on the tin. No more, no less. Definite rental or bargin bin material I think...

Just played the demo...... awesome!!!

This is Sega Rally at it's best. Sega Rally game play of old, which has been bought bang up to date in next gen style. Will certainly get this when it's released next week.

I've owned every single version of Sega Rally incarnations (still love the Dreamcast version even now) on console release and even thought of buying a proper arcade machine at several points. I think you could say I am a SR fan.

Regards,
Shaun.

spent 5 hours on this tonight (full game)

it gets hard really fast

some of the stages look awesome, really good GFX in parts.
the problem seams to be the AI

in the beginning they are not a problem, later on they seam to hit the perfect grip line all the time and you have to resort to smashing into them to get any decent results.

you can be leading for most of a lap, go into the corner just that little bit to hot and slide a little wide (this is rally after all sliding is part of it, no big deal) and you will watch in utter disbelief as the AI car just flys up the inside with what seams like unbelievable levels of grip and then takes off after clipping the apex

very strange, i came around a corner chasing an AI car and watched him mess up a little and then fishtail down the track which was quite funny (apart from the fact he was fishtailing and pulling away from me )

AI cars have exactly the same physics set up as the players ...only difference is torque amounts (which varies in each class). The reason AI cars are very good is because they tend to follow the same 'racing' line again & again & so are getting more grip (bottom surface has more grip)

With a 'few' months practice you'll be beating the AI cars with ease

problem i had was the bottom line in the ruts were throwing me off in mid corner

anyway, i have completed the championships as much as i can (not enough points to unlock the final but got everything else

also got all the liveries for each car.

will probably take a breather and make a start on the online multiplayer stuff, to be honest i`m expecting it to be a bit better as normal humans cant hit these super elite racing lines the ai seams to hit

i also found going down to the bonnet cam or bumper cam was much easier, i also suspect manual gears might give a significant advantage as i did a rally last night to get the "manual gears achievement" and i really did slaughter the AI on the amature levels, much bigger gap then i remember.

i won a few rallys while drunk just by keeping the throttle nailed and steering/crashing around the corners

although this only works on some stages

I struggled to get into a room online, but when I did it was great fun. As you say, much better against humans than AI

Cracking game, really enjoying it. More fun than DiRT IMO.

i thought dirt was good in parts, the buggys were fun, the rest just felt crap, i bought a preowned copy, got around 870 points from it and traded it back in 1 month later.

thats good to hear about playing with humans

some of the tracks i find extremley hard, and had trouble with a lot of the reverse tracks as i couldnt see where i was going, i had the brightness down to low and had to adjust it up

started the championships again to try and unlock the finals in each group and used manual gears.

this is much, much better, the car is faster, seams handle far superior, coming into a corner its a doddle to knock it down a gear turn in and slide around in one full turn rather then the clunky auto gear way.

every single race i tried in premier (amature and the medium settings) i won, some tracks i had problems with (artic 1 iirc) where i could never seam to find the balance to slide around the corner properly, with the manual gears its a doddle, brake + knock down, turn in and slide aorund bouncing on the limiter.

much better

I take it you meant 'SEGA' rally? ...Total crap is a bit harsh ...what in particular irked you so much?

It just felt like I'd been thrown back in time - graphics, music, and general handling of the cars. think i've been spoilt with forza 2, but even so, I'm sure they could have made SEGA rally a great game!

1. select bonnet or bumper cam
2. use manual gears
3. that's it have fun

the chase views are a bit crap IMO, camera seams to be a bit sluggish and its to hard to control round the corners

auto gears, not sure whats going on with them but it seams to effect the drifting and sliding a bit to much

pretty much slaughtering the AI now that i moved to manual gears, even on expert settings.

only thing i`m having trouble with is getting the 2 secs air achievement

managed to get the "win a race without crashing or touching anything" one after an hour of trying (while drunk )
what i noticed is that if you do the same race over and over again you can predict where each car is going to go, the same car hit the same corner every time losing it speed, the same car took the same corner a bit to wide and scrubbed off speed ETC ETC

multiplayer is the best part of it (also easy to slaughter everybody as nobody seams to use manual gears on there either LOL)

well yes i'm a fan of sega rally and went out and brought it for the PS3 and it's a great game full of colour and detail, but it's like ridge racer unrealistic fast arcade racer game. Which is fine as it's always been like that for the 'sega rally' series.

Motorstorm is great but the fun is on the online gaming , and if you want real rally buzz try colin mcrae dirt as this game is absolutely amazing, love it.
