jobs....

Andy,
Have you tried some of the websites like jobserve and monster? They used to be IT-centric but they have opened up and include all sorts of job types now. Coming from a distribution background, I would have thought something in logistics would be an extension on your skills?
Best of luck chap

ditto!!! "oh you're a postman on 12k? Get an IT qualification and you'll be on 40k with a company car blah blah"!! boll0cks!!
I'm amazed so many people think IT is still a gold mine, and as a result every job has about 100 applicants now, further reducing the rates!
Yes you can still get good money, but thats true for any sector.

thanks for the ongoing advice people.
with regards to an extension of duties at work.... absolutley no chance. usually several internal vacanies going, but you must have no active disciplinary/capability warnings on file. a case of facr dont fit. i know im never gonna progress at this place. they generally look outside the company for superiors etc.
with regards courses etc. the company offer them, and apparantly they dont have to be work related, but after said course you have to remain at the company for another 18 months or pay it back. (oh and again no live disciplinary etc etc issues)
im prepared to try my hand at lots of things, but as soon as i look on the jobcentre webby, you need qualifications in this, city and guilds in that, for what... less money? i dont mind starting at the bottom somewhere, and grafting my way up the ladder. how did i become a decent artist? practise and hard graft at school/college. the jobs everyone has described ie oil rig work, i just cant find out anything about them. i dont mind working away from home or commuting, as long as i can afford it.
im not asking for a job on a plate, or for everything wrapped up in a bow, but i simply cannot ever find anything which i think im suitable for, as i havent qualifications in mechanics, or nvq's in care, or management skills and course, or this/that.
as im good with my hands, welding appeals to me too. but im stuck on nights as i cant afford a wage cut until i remortgage. thus night courses are a pain and un-manageable.
its so catch 22, and im looking just for an opportunity to expand myself. i dont wanna be like some of the guys at my place, there 20 years solid loyal service, know the job better than themselves, but constantly screwed over/ignored for promotion, as the company imports superiors bla bla.
im ranting on now, but hopefully people get the general idea.
in comparison, my mrs works in a factory on about £185 a week take home for 40 hours, so basic minimum wage, but theres no hassle, she gets along with everyone, even after three months, she was offered a promottion to be a quality auditor. ive been at my jon 3 1/2 years and not even been offered training on other jobs, never mind a promotion.
***oh, and without rising to you lewis you tosser (yes infract me for it if you want ), count your blessings, as you obviously live in a dream world. some people would be thankful to earn my wages, lots of people infact, and theres nothing wrong with that, but i want to make more of myself, and sh!tty comments about blessing from you are neither wanted, nor appreciated, you time wasting troll. **** off ***
appreciate the ongoing advice scoobynetters. will look into it somemore.

Sounds very appealing yes
However your working 168hr fortnights (14x12) compared to 75 in a normal job (37.5hrs x2) Even over a month your doing 168hrs vs 150hrs taking your 2 weeks off into account!
Then quality of life really.. Oil rig isn't a nice place, living out of a suitcase in the middle of the north sea for the rest of your life or shacked up at home with wife and kids every night! Your missus will probably be sha**ing the window cleaner/milkman and postie all at the same time when your offshore.
Then you've got a very unsociable working calander. Missing xmas/new year/weddings/christenings/birth and upbringing of children etc etc.
Relationships suffer, those oil workers that say it doesn't are in Ku-Ku land! I hated my dad not being there for me as a child, missing everything. Not very close to him now either if im honest!
Has its perks i suppose, good wage, good ''apparant'' time off. Even 2wks on 2wks off, you'll still work more hrs than ordinary joe with a 9-5 mon-fri job 46wks of the year.
As a junior, money isn't that good. Friend has just started, about £26k with offshore bonus. You need to work your *** off to get upto £70-80k
Average rig earnings about £50-55k per year but from all of my above points, i'd rather earn £40k here onshore and get home to see the wife and kids every night.

ok fair points, can you point me in the direction of the £40k a year job, and il work my **** off to earn that type of money.

heres a wee link for ya bud
Oilcareers - The Recruitment site for the Worldwide Oil and Gas Industry
agree about being away from home and how family life suffers, thats why i've quit the company i'm working for just now.
thing is as a service hand i can be sitting on my **** for weeks at a time offshore AND still get paid, quite well too.
the flip side to this is that it's not uncommon to be working stupid hours to get the job done, the longest i've worked is 44 hours straight through.
now, you get all the safety BS fired at you BUT when it comes down to it, there are timesyou just have to get on with it.
time off, i've been told about that
things are very very busy in the offshore game just now, the hard thing is to get into it with out any knowledge or job experience, you may find it VERY difficult to get into it, even after getting all your offshore certs you aint guaranteed to get any job
the job i was in paid 19000 a year with 170 day rate
the job i'm going to

Plus, how much does staying in London 4 nights a week and then doing that big commute take out of that money? Quite a lot I suspect.

I see you are in South Wales, Loads of IT jobs there paying £450+ a day or £70K permanent, you only need to have a general Windows background with some design work.

Not that it matters, I've only just moved here, and will probably be moving away again soon (my GF is a contractor and my current job has me covering the whole country)

Does make me wonder how people do things, I am earning a fair amount contracting in IT, Oracle, SQL Server etc but still cant afford flash holidays and cars that people on much less money seem to go on !
IT isnt a goldmine any more unless you have the right skills, my current company want me to go perm but they wont pay enough to make it worthwhile, depends on a contract extension though, plus they are moving to 7 miles away from my home, preferable to a 2 hour commute to leeds !

Not up in the valleys there aren't. Or in Cardiff or Newport for that matter. The market is a little better in Bristol but less attractive when you take the bridge fees into account. Haven't seen anything even starting to approach the figures you quote though. Care to hook me up?
