Ummm, it pays a lot of peoples' mortgages... To attract industry to an area - to give people employment - you need to have the infrastructure in place to allow it. I've seen loads of small towns in the back of beyond in the States with really impressive airport facilities, because the local authorities recognised that if they didn't provide it, the Coca Cola execs wouldn't site their new bottling plant there, or Delphi their new widget company.
I don't much like the idea of concreting over any land but...
1) if you're going to compete with French, Dutch and Spanish airport expansion (because they're making it more attractive to do business in their backyard), you have to face reality and expand. Heathrow really is bursting at the seams.
2) The area sandwiched between LHR and the M4 is, frankly, a sh!thole. I'd much rather "devastate" this than Suffolk or Kent which has some nice countryside.
The real problem is our incessant desire to see populations expand. That's what we should be discussing. To me, having kids is a far more selfish act than whether work sends me to the States.

Sorry Les, its not as simple as that. A large number of the people of Sipson regularly complain about LHR and its ops.
How do I know? Trust me, I know.
Under the terms of building the new runway, these people will get full market value + a %, to move away. Away from somewhere they complain about!
What is the problem??

I spent many years living right next to Heathrow (Wraysbury, Datchet & Colnbrook - check them on a map if you're unsure). There were some locals who fought against T5 - but it tended to be a very vocal minority. TBH when you live next door to an airport like that you just tune out the aeroplanes - so extra traffic really isn't a problem.
There's already a massive motorway link to the site (M25 & M4), there's already a tube (Piccadilly Line) and there's never been an overland rail link. So I'd guess that the foundation for the additional infrastructure is already there.

Agree with all Flightman says. It's an airport. It's been there a long time and hopefully will be there. You live in a house. You want bigger - you either move or you extend. It's the same with an airport. But it's a lot easier to extend because a) you are an airport already so everyone knows you are there, b) it's a load cheaper as most if not all of the infrastructure is there and c) you have some control over those locals who live near an airport then moan about the noise, whereas if you move, you'll have a whole load of locals moaning about the airport...
Wanna stop airports expanding - stop flying. Wanna go to the sun in the US or Maldives or anywhere else? Bet you gotta fly. Guess what - so do millions of other people.
It's life and reality... live with it.
Protesters should be made to dig the dirt for the new runway as a punishment. That'd teach them!

I know some of the "protesters" actually do work for a living but i suspect there in the minority there. So can the DSS stop paying benefits to all the other work-shy scumbags as there not available for work?
I doubt it.
These type of people who go and protest at what evers in the news at the moment, seem so keen to reject normal society/standards so i wish they;d stop giving them dole money and god knows what else- Let the losers fend for themselves!
And if they really do want to help the environment/society then perhaps Mr Brown can arrange to scramble a jet fighter and blow them up? No more bad smell and a shed load of benefit money saved-Result!
