could be a bad batch of discs? how old is your laptop, what memeory, processor do you have? if its quite old it might be asking too much of it.
the easiest program to use to burn straight to dvd is a plug in for nero, called Nero vision express.

i'm no expert apples but your puter and drive should be ok if its new, give nero vision express ago it easy to use and does everything in one go, burn at the slowest speed to minimize any problems should only take about an hour-hour and a half tops to burn and convert

If you couldn't get your laptop to work with your telly or vcr, its probably because you didn't set the screen output. Its usually the function key (Fn) plus F4 or F5 on most of the laptops I've used.
Also, don't forget to use an IP blocker if you're downloading from torrent sites. Peerguardian2 comes highly recommended.
