It's a fair point Floyd, although i'm not so sure in this case. The mag feature was over a year ago, and as you will see below the cars on my drive were cased out a few days earlier by a couple of lads who were on foot (a police dog tracked there scent to a field 1/2 a mile ago) so i think they were local.
This is an eact copy of the letter i sent to the insurance. I have a begrudging admiration for them, as what they did was very clever. Still scum though.
Dear Sirs,
I am writing in response to your letter dated 23rd august 2007, and to provide a statement detailing the circumstances of the theft.
In the week preceding the theft, I was working on another Subaru car (owned by a friend) on my drive. At about 0300 hours on Tuesday 14th August, I woke up for some reason feeling uncomfortable. I Walked to the landing and looked out and there were two men looking in to my friends car with a torch. They seemed to be looking at the stereo. I ran down the stairs and put the key in the lock to go out. At this point they ran, with me following, but I was unable to catch them.
I rang the police immediately, who responded by sending a couple of cars and a dog down. The dog traced a scent up to a nearby country lane but could not follow further. The Police said they would be extra vigilant in the next few days.
I was very worried about my friend’s car, so when the shops opened I went and bought a 500W security light and a baby monitor that I could leave in the car so I could hear if the car was broken into. My main thoughts were they were just ‘kids’ after a stereo.
I was on holiday that week, which I spent working on my friends car. At the end of each day I would push my friend’s car right up to the garage door, lock and alarm it, and connect the baby monitor up. I then drove my car right up behind it, and then locked and alarmed it. Every night I would then take all 3 sets of keys to bed with me. My own set of spare keys are permanently kept in our safe on the premises.
The back of my car was then about 6 foot from the pavement, so I parked, locked and alarmed my wife’s car half on the pavement/road at right angles to my car but directly behind it. This was so it would be very difficult for them to steal either my friends or my own car.
On the evening of Sunday 19th August, I finished work on my friend’s car at maybe 1900 hours and put all 3 cars in the position described above. At about 2200 hours I went out for a cigarette where I checked all cars were locked. I then went to bed.
Monday 20th August should have been my first day back at work after a 3 week holiday, so I came downstairs at about 0615 hours to take the dog for a walk. When I opened the door my car was gone. Neither my friend’s car or my wife’s car had been tampered with or moved in any way, and there were no immediate signs/clues as to how my car had been removed. My dog was sleeping only a few yards away (separated by the front door only) and would have barked if he was disturbed.
I immediately rang the police who logged the incident. I then rang the tracker company (RAC Trackstar) to see if they could track the vehicle. They said they needed a police incident number so I rang the police back up to get this which I then gave to the Tracker company. After a short while they said they could get no signal from the tracker but would continue trying.
After ringing in to work I went to look to see if I could find what had happened. Next doors lawn – which is adjacent to my drive – had 2 distinctive tracks across that were narrower than the width of my cars wheels.
A little later on, I went to do a few enquires with the neighbours. At this point the police had still not turned up. A lady I know in the adjacent close says she heard a number of voices on the corner of my road and hers at about 0200-0210 hours. This corner is approx 60 metres from my house. Shortly after she heard my car start up and accelerate flat out up the road. (It had a distinctive sound) , followed a few seconds later by another car accelerating quickly away.
By this time, one of my next door neighbour’s sons was looking around for me. On a lawn on the aforementioned corner he found the 2 piece tracker device. It had obviously been ripped out and just thrown on the lawn. About ½ an hour later he found the alarm siren behind a hedge about 200 yards further up the road.
I rang the police to say I had these items. Later on in the day they picked them up to take for fingerprinting. They could only find ‘glove’ prints as they put it.
Later on in the day after speaking with the police we concluded that the following happened. –
The car was lifted up on skates while still on my drive, turned through 90 degrees, then pulled/pushed while still on the skates across next door neighbour’s lawn. This would have taken a few people. Once they were on the pavement / road, they dropped the car onto its wheels and pushed it a bit further up the road where they could work on it. Maybe they knew I had a dog or noticed the baby monitor in my friends car.
Once there, we assume they prized the bonnet open somehow and ripped the alarm siren off immediately. Once this was off they would have broke into the car somehow, got round a Thatcham cat1 alarm and immobiliser (was o.e fitment), had knowledge of where the trackers were generally installed on these cars and removed it before driving off.
I am a active member of many Subaru related car forums, and the theft has been posted on all of these and people asked to keep an eye out on e-bay or if they are offered any parts. The car has an extensive list of modifications, some of which are very rare or one offs, and it would be easily recognisable. I have offered a reward of £250 for information, and my friend who’s car I am working on has offered to double it. Unfortunately no-one has got back to me yet.
Yours Sincerely
Mark ******.

Insurance rang me this afternoon with an offer, needless to say i turned it down.

Mark, can I add that I am gutted about the theft - after the work you put into the car it must be an awful feeling.
But from your description of the theft, these sound like they were professionals - to be able to move the car on the skates, know how to get around all the security etc... doesnt sound like the local scallies looking for a joyride.
Could be its been stolen for use as a getaway car, or for parts, or even to be sent overseas.
It may be the young lads sniffing around your mates car werent involved, or possibly they passed on the info to the thieves about your car ?
Either way at least they didnt break into your house or use violence to get the keys from you - cars are easy to replace, and you can always earn more money to pay for another one, but people arent !

That really is shocking, what an awesome car because of the way you looked after it.
Question, was it taken with keys? How do you know it was started as oppose to put in a flat back or even something bigger?
It concerns me that a modern immobilised car can be started without keys if it was.
Good luck making another great car, I'm sure you will.

They are very good. They will get round almost any alarm or immobiliser if they want to. And if they don't want to they will just kick your door down and fill you in for the keys!
Mike, i am sure the two lads were casing the place and cars out and would have told a pro gang the score.

Simon,
Have not heard a dickie bird mate, people have sent me lots of links to stuff on ebay etc. but none of it was off my car.
It disapeared completely, i suspect abroad as a complete car. Insurance gave me a very fair pay out a while ago now. Have bought myself a new bike (1050 speed triple Trumpet) and will be in the scooby fold again in the spring.
