Does anybody know if a case similar to this has ever been as far as court. Maybe once it did a precident would be set and it wouldn't be such a grey area.

It's not a grey area. You read your own Insurance Policy and see what it says EXACTLY about driving other cars. If you don't understand that then you phone them up and ask them.

My own policy says I can provided I have permission from the owner and there is nothing about the other cars being insured (which my insurance company confirmed when I phoned to check). I guess the only "grey" area would be if you abused this on a daily basis rather than the odd one-off. dl
