I think it is ok but I really wait to see the STI to decidebut so far the design isnt what I will be looking for, they should drop the Impreza name on it too really due to the totally different style.

Generally the 2008 rally car looks very good which is what you would expert with the flared arches and graphics, the problem is that the road car is never going to look anywhere near as good as it will be built with a standard shell and in my opinion it looks very bland and it looks to much like the cheap korean cars and Huyundai`s etc.

The front end of the car looks awful and the grill does it no favours, if we was to get a flared arch version of the new impreza with a different front end that looks more agressive then it would look a very good car for a hatch.

The pics i have seen of the new road car are awful and its not something that you would associate with subaru or rallying, its little more than a cheap looking korean hatch of which their are many similar versions of it around already. Not for me in its present format

Hyundai

PMSL

the new subaru looks amazingly crap, just another simple hatchback, like pretty much everything else on the road.

the wrc version looks crap as well, even if the sti version looked like the wrc version, i wouldn't buy one, ever.

the classic had the "rally look"
the bugeye just looked wrong
the blobeye looked like ok
the hawkeye had a stupid front end
the crapeye (somebody has to name it) just looks like it should be doing 5mph to ther shops for a pint of milk

Well I've actaully seen the new version - I saw a WRX in the states on holiday and I like it, certainly looks better in the metal than in photos. I liked the interior and fit; good but not BM levels.

Reports suggest that its softer than the outgoing model (in the same way that bugeye was to the classic). Doesn't worry me too much, but it will mean that there's not much difference to the Golf/Seat/Focus.

On the negative side I worry about fuel consumption, and how IM will price it. As I've said before on here if the WRX were priced a £16k it would be one of the cars at the top of the list, but at £20k forget it.

Well if you go for an EU import you will probably be able to get them for that price

That is a good point, except that the mazda had 40bhp more than the wrx, so no real comparison there

Firstly, I bought my subaru because i didnt want to live with a car that looked like everything else. Maybe the 2008 will be a nice car to drive but according to the pics seen so far it seems to have lost its individuality / personality etc.

Secondly, my girlfriend was looking over my shoulder as I was viewing the early posts of images on scoobynet and immediately said "ooh I like the white one".....enough said.

Again this model could be the new Hyundai,1 series, focus, the distintive look of the well known saloon is what has made this car so popular and its as if someone didnt do any customer re-search before bloody designing it.

Why on gods earth did they design a car that looks the same as any other hatchback. Clearly they never read subaru forums to gauge current customer views for god sake.Taking into account that this is a free resource, its not like they have to go out into the street with a clipboard to poll the public.

Ok so its aimed at the slightly retired market but what if they dont sell as well as the focus taking into account the recent car tax hike. The focus is the number one choice for that market subaru are aiming for because they aint aiming for the market that has kept them afloat thus far.

if i wanted a hatchback this would be very high on the list.but i bought the classic impreza because its a salloon i needed a boot for pram and decent back seats for baby car seat, otherwise i would of bought a 300zx or rx7 purely for rarity.luckily there will be plenty second hand imprezas to upgrade to.
could subaru not compete with mitsubishi anymore ,so are going into another market,?just a thought
pro: its made by a well established rally motivated manufacturer.
con: calling it an impreza

Thats not a very smart comment though is it, because if it sold at 10% of the rate of the Focus, it would be selling many times what times the current models sells.

Brilliant day I just happened to be there so no Camera and my mobile is utter Cr4P. took a few pic's and ****** battery died

OK it was a little drive and not a full test, I aint Clarkson and It hadn't been remapped etc. They very small quick report on it is probably meaniless to most.

IMHO it certainly has Potential so can't wait to see the STi

Even in WRX form, is far better in the flesh than in Pics, more cabin space than my MY06 sti, IMHO

It's so bland and unispiring no matter how long you look at it.
So much like a mazda 323, focus etc !

They need to do a saloon version so they can keep up
with 323's, focus's

I WONT BE BUYING ONE.

When the Ford Focus first appeared the shape was revolutionary. Its a shame Subaru couldn't come up with something more original. People, especially in the UK, will modify to improve the looks as with the bugeye model. Performance of the new standard WRX seems poor and its a shame we can't have decent "hot" models straight out of the box like JDM's or the EVO.

Pro: I will want this with a Diesel power plant when I'm 60.

Con: Thats 20 years away, and god willing, they will have changed it by then.

Would it sell anything like 10% though?

For: Some sort of evolution of the Impreza was needed after 6 odd years of current overall shape

Against: It's very difficult to out Focus a Focus......

Personally I thing Subaru lost the plot when they stopped making the MY00 classic, this was by far the best car they ever made, it was also the best looking of all Subarus ugly cars. It is also the iconic subaru model.

The new WRC car looks pretty good and if the road car was 350ps with gearbox, engine and brakes to support it, and looked exactly like the WRC car then I may possibly be tempted away from my MY00 classic but as it stands at the moment I will be keeping my 7 year old car as Subaru has NOTHING to replace it with.

possitive's

the interior looks a far nicer place to park one's rear!

negative's

It aint an impreza,it's just wrong.........

A 22b was an impreza,A p1 was an impreza...spec c.......blob/hawk sti etc etc etc

Subaru need to remember who buy's there car's,instead they are just trying to appeal to mr and missus 40 odd with two kids and a small rodent like dog,i can see there reason's from a "volume of sale's" approach, but its a drivers car at the end of the day, let's not pull out the rug!

I am in no doubt that the 1.5/1.6 litre model will sell by the bucketload,as it will probably be cheaper then a rival focus/golf and have more toy's(4WD air con etc) then the competion at the same level on model/pricing

But i feel something major needs to be done with the performance model's(on the styling/exterior side)

However,i havnt drove one yet,so my thought's may well be total gubbin's when i get behind the wheel of the new sti when it arrive's over here!

If the STI is anything like the WRC concept car, then i await with baited breath my testdrive

I hope the Sti will resemble the SWRT Concept

I think its a mistake not bringing the saloon to the UK

It is Subarus attempt to make it appeal to the mass market - and the mass market buy Focus and a damned good car it is (the Focus).

Subaru need to give it the equipment levels of their rivals AND need to offer quality interiors.

I like the idea of a HatchBack - practicality with paying a premium for a Wagon (and losing more come re-sale time!).

There is no doubt that the hardened Subaru Rally buyers will be disappointed, but - to be brutally honest - Subaru cannot afford to care about what you think as you are a tiny, tiny, tiny, insignificant group of buyers (who actually change the car extensively in any case!)

For:- HatchBack Practicality, Powerful (hopefully), Full Time AWD

Against:- Drab styling for the base models, to get into the STi could be finacially restrictive.

As said by quite a few folk :

For - cool front end.

Against - ubiquitous current hatchback rear end, lack of a saloon model.

Personally I'd have voted for

STi hatch & STi saloon for the UK

and not

WRX Hatch & STi Hatch

Although the S-GT (WRX) with go well with some Tweaks

IMHO

Against: Its just another hot hatch!
For:The non turbo versions should apeal to the masses in the form of a small shopping car.
