Subaru have never marketed pretty cars but they have been distinctive, niche cars. Historically, WRX was only one example of this. I guess most people who bought them early on in the Impreza era did so because they went well and because they were different. (We didn't buy them because of their rally heritage: back in '94 they didn't have one. We bought them despite their "agricultural" and "ugly duckling" heritage.)

The problem now is that Subaru/FHI want to get out of the niche but most of us on here still want a niche car. I feel sorry for Subaru/FHI trying to run a business and please us lot at the same time!

Personally, I don't care too much about how the new car looks. If it goes well and is well engineered, I guess I'll buy one... But I'm sorry there's not to be a wagon.

On the positive side - It might help Subaru shift a few more cars.

On the negative side. It is utterly hideous. It is a hatchback, I am already spoilt for choice in that field, and I doubt if the subaru will be significantly better than it's vastly increased number of rivals.
My choice for a fast affordable sports saloon has now been reduced to two. Well done Subaru.

Don`t like it at all, the rally car looks ok but we won`t get anything like that on the road. It looks like something a pensioner would use, can`t say i will be enquiring on its price.

It's surely going to be the hottest hot hatch on the market though isn't it?

I can't think of any comparable car that will offer 300+ BHP.

I like what I see. And from a Subaru perspective the 4 door saloon market is such small market segment (and strinking), it shouldn't surpise anyone that they are going in this direction.

Agree re the market shrinking - because of the new car!

Had four from new since '98 .... won't be a fifth.

'Nuff said.

starting to like the the look of this

Against: Rear lights are just nasty as is the stupid chrome bit between them
For: The way the STi looks more like the WRC car but its still not a saloon

Agreed, both very "look at me, I exist too!" - just like the original Lexus IS200 with its 'distinctive' lights. Smacks of desperation to me, what a shame the car couldn't actually be distictive in its own right.

Sounds like there's a consensus on the looks, then - but personally I'd reserve judgment until we know how the car actually drives.

I wouldn't touch the new one with a barge pole unless they change it back to saloon...don't like hatchbacks!
