I'm susprised they've gone as low as they have!
I'm also surprised other banks who use similar business models, such and A&L and B&B have such strong share prices in comparison?!

Northern Rock has no future, the brand is destroyed and they are essentially unable to carry on with their business of lending money.
All that is left is for a takeover offer for their mortgage book.

Well 100,000 at 270p is looking pretty silly now.
185 and falling.
Although I remember many years ago Next were 7p and I was torn as to whether to buy a 1000 purely out of a bet.
Four years later they were 770p.
Needless to say I did not buy

They are not going to go bust as they are not in operational debt. Most of their mortgage book is already securitised (sold off in the capital markets). This means the capital markets carry the risk of their mortgages not NR.
Their problem is that they are having difficulty in raising new capital to back new mortgages as banks have stopped contributing to the capital markets during the 'credit crunch'.
The biggest problem is that they will struggle to do any new business for a while and so their operational costs will be loaded onto existing customers.

If Ford stopped selling new cars they'd be in trouble. If NR stops selling financial products then wont they be in trouble. Or am i missing something?
