probably the scariest film i saw as a kid was alien when i was about 8, and its still brilliant now.

recently i agree with an earlier post it was probably the descent, most horror movies never seem that scary anymore.

Wolf Creek was a bit scary, but then I watched it in a cinema when I was travelling round Australia.

I suppose Silence of the Lambs is more thriller then horror, but it still capable of inducing nightmares!!

The House on Haunted Hill (1999) and Silent Hill, both put the sh1tters up me, its when they quickly speed up then slow down the movement of the creatures/freaks that does it.

And as mentioned The Descent is excellent, not too silly like some horrors can get.

The Legend of bogey creek when I was about 7 or so I guess, anything since then pales into insignificance...

Funnily enough, just watching Final Destination and Candy Man himself is in it. Brought it all back to me. Yes, a spooky film

It depends on your definition of scary...

Aged 9-11 Plague of the zombies, The reptile, Dracula (C.Lee)

11-16... There was one film, cant recall the name, and all i can remember, is that these "things" came up from an open chimney vent in a remote house, (typical corney plot, the vent was sealed off (yada yada) and they opend it up...the ending was they grabbed the "lead" actor/actress and dragged him / her off, the flashes from her instant camera making them run away (they didnt like the light), they last view is the lead actor axctress looking down the vent into the blackness...

16+ nowt

Most horror films nowdays follow set formulas and whilst there are the odd nuggets that break new ground with special effects, the core elements are always there...

The tension build up.....to
  • A genuine shock/jump moment
  • A let down with nothing happening, only to have the shock jump moment appear immediately after the let down
  • The end credit twist/ plot teaser
Some films believe that high body count / none stop gore are the way to define scary, or shock the audience.

The only film 16+ that made me ever feel (heeby jeeby ) was a little known film called funhouse. The lead thing monster certainly made me think!!!
(i was working as an undertaker at the time, so it took a lot to make me frightened of a film)

Bear in mind this was round the era of the so called video nasty (yea right)

and of the ones i saw none of them were scary

films that i thought were good ...though

Scanners
The Thing
The Fly (remake)
American Werewolf
The Howling
Poltergeist

Seen far too many so called horrors, they all seem a bit tame now.

The grudge had its moments, Pet cemetary was good if only for the bit where the nutty sister gets out of bed.
I seem to remember a low budget zombie flick called The living dead from manchester morgue, this was in the days of a guy renting video's from the back of his car though.

US version of Ring was a dumbed down POS compared to the Japanese version mate. It was the same with Pulse.

USA don't do creepy, scary films like the Japanese do; they forsake atmosphere for gore!

Threads, Now that scared me, didn't sleep properly for weeks after seeing that I think it was too close to what could be a reality at the time. I remember being at school the following day, everyone was rabbiting about it constantly lol.

Hellraiser was a very freaky film when it first came out.

I rather enjoyed the descent especially the way out ending, very novel.

i always found the over the top gore fest films like driller killer, absurd etc werent scary suspence that makes things scary not blood and guts,a good example is the bit in jaws when they are diving under that boat and the bloke with his eye missing jumps out, seen jaws at least 20 times and it still makes me jump.
another couple of squeamish bits pet cemetary the bit when the little boy cuts herman munsters tendons and the sledge hammer/ankle moment in misery"mister penguin points north"
