I watched Steve Hislop win some great races when I was a youngster back in the isle of man. Doesn't seem fair for true greats to taken in this way.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, last night told The Sunday Telegraph he had spoken to the driver's brother and that he had confirmed the former champion had been piloting the Squirrel aircraft.

Speaking from his home in Switzerland, Mr Freudiger said he was still in shock and fighting back tears as he said he could not reach Mr McRae's wife, Alison.

A sad day indeed for rallying and subaru enthusiasts everywhere. I can only speak for myself but my interest in the impreza and rallying came from watching Colin in the 555 and WRC Impreza (alas I don't recall seeing him in the Legacy RS ). I think a fair few of us would like to think that we could try and imitate him a little bit by getting an impreza, even if it's just saying "This is basically the same car Colin rallies in!" He brought a lot of joy to many, many people worldwide and will be remembered fondly.

My condolences and deepest sympathies to his wife and daughter and the rest of their family at this difficult time

A true star who will be missed. As a new father myself this is totally shocking to me from all aspects.

Hope his family are OK at this sad time.

Why are we losing so many of our British WRC stars before they reach old age?

(sadly the second fatal air crash of the afternoon)

RIP to those that have left us

I can't believe his Wikipedia entry already has him as dead before being officially confirmed.

He definitely fostered my interest in Scoobies. RIP

words just escape me....g/f is a major major fan of him, we have various pictures up in the house of him and his cars as my love for scoobs came purely from watching him rallying years ago and made me just want to jump into a similar car from a young age...and now, if the stories are correct, we have lost another great
