Plenty of other good makes out there mate.
I just preferred the feel of the Marin, but a different make may well suit your riding style better.
A couple of fairly new "kids-on-the block" that look well specced for the prices are:
There are probably plenty more but that's about all I can think of at the moment!

Remember to get a helmet , not expensive and you might feel a bit silly sometimes but all too easy to come off and bash the old nut I reckon

In the end I gave myself a budget and stuck to it. Narrowed it down to about 5 different bikes, all similar spec, tried them all and bought the one I felt most comfortable riding. It also happened to be £50 under budget

There are simply so many choices and one will have better forks but not as good brakes etc. and vice-versa. One thing to remember is that the main bulk of your purchase is the frame. Get a good frame and EVERYTHING else can be changed and upgraded at a later date if needed

Avid's are very good.
I've got Avid disc brakes on mine, but mine are Avid mechanicals rather than hydraulics. I tried different bikes, some with hydraulics, some with mechanicals, I didn't notice that much difference to be honest with the ones I tried.

ChainReactionCycles.com - Computers - Buy Computers
Computers | Cycle | Wiggle - The UK's #1 Online Bike & Cycle Shop
Any of the VDOor Cateye computers are good value, get one with a cordless transmitter which means your not stuck with a wire between the sensor on the fork and the computer on the handle bar/Stem. I've had a C4 Cordless on my Road bike for a while and it's been 100% Reliable
Always great service from Chainreaction Tiny.
If u was out for around 40 minutes then i'd guess you'd average summin like 8-10 Mph if your just pootling along so you'd of done summin like 5-6 miles.
