Yes, but if all police are armed and allowed to shoot everyone will learn to stop running when the police shout stop or i'll shoot. In the UK when people hear that they automatically think the police are bluffing.
I know if I were in the States on holiday and a police officer pointed a gun at me and said stop or i'll shoot it would be like i were set in concrete.
Thats the difference, even visitors to the states know not f*@K with their police. Opposed to visitors to the UK know they can do what they want because our police will do nothing.

Respect for the police is the next part.
Even most perps who have spent the last 2 hours shooting at cops and running from them in high speed chases end up calling the cops "officer" or "sir" In this country its a barage of abuse and profanities.
Reason for the UK, when they get to the station, most will be bailed (never to be seen again) the rest will get petty sentances for serious crimes.

That's because you're British and are not used to the gun culture. If you were a crack dealer in South Central LA, with an automatic pistol shoved down the back of your pants, you'd probably shoot back !

Hang about - If the police in the States are this enourmous deterrent and have enourmous respect, then surely the States is the most crime free country in the world.
Right?
Right?

Why follow him on foot? why not in a vehicle? Or several vehicles? Of in the air?
I don't buy at all that he wasn't apprehended purely because armed response teams were not available for 10 minutes - It certainly doesn't convincingly win the argument that police should be armed in general.
Gun breed guns. It's been seen over and over again. We do not want to go down this road, and thankfully, I don't beleive we will

What you believe, buy, accept is up to you. I was in the car listening to the transmission from CAD and CO19, with repeated instructions to "wait at last known point"
Look at the things UK Police are "encouraged" NOT to do, due to H&S issues, and you will see how little can be done in certain situations.
Its not meant to win an arguement, I am merely discussing an actual event, and suggesting how different the outcome would have been had CO19 been more available.
Having watched a number of armed operations based from my road,I have seen how systematic and effective a CO19 stop is first hand, and am confident that HAD CO19 been available, the outcome would have been very different.
As for helicopters... they cant be everywhere at once, nor guess where the next shooting will be. A heavily populated area, 5-10 mins to get the chopper over head, and no accurate known direction or destination of the shooter..... Chances of finding.... slim to none.

lol every country has its issues. Simple fact is, we will never manage gun crime with ASP's and whistles.
In the USA they have the right to bare arms.... Makes their situation slightly different. Availablilty, chance of victim also being armed etc...
My point is the police in the USA command more respect.....

I received the email that the original poster has posted from and it was sent to me by someone who is a special constable. When I looked through the previous recipients who it had been sent to there were at least a dozen offcial police email addresses.

But at the same time, some sound advice

Given the job of stopping a person who you have been informed by intelligence (wrongly in this case) is carrying a suicide bomb. Given instructions to neutralise them..... sadly its kinda what they were instructed to do in the given situation.
Im not saying it is right, nor the right amount of force, but they were trained to do a job, told to carry it out... and did so.
had it been a bomber and he had been left to board a train killing 50+ people, they would have been criticized for NOT neutralising him.

Are the armed officers not allowed to use their common sense before they gun a man down in cold blood! Why did they use 7 shots to the head taking turns to shoot him?

In the first place it was disappointing to hear that the public was told that Menezes was seen to vault over the ticket barrier and run on to a train when in fact he walked to the train, stopped to buy a paper, used his card to go through the barrier. and walked normally into the train. He was dressed in a light denim open jacket so it could easily be seen that he was not wearing explosives under his jacket nor was he carrying a bag or back pack! He was not overweight thus being more easily able to conceal explosives.

Adding to the disappointment is the number of conflicting reports members of the public gave also, which sort of indicates a lot of confusion.
"taking it in turns" I think is a bit extreme, I dont think it was quite that calculated. But take a moment to consider your choices, put in the same situation. Bombs have been proven to be VERY effective, your are chosen to get up close and personal, and neutralise the threat....
Heart pumping, adrenaline flowing, you have to make the right decision with the intelligence you have.
Turns out that he was apparently innocent of any charge. Which is indeed very sad, but I dont think it is fair to condemn the people sent to carry out a task.
If he did walk so calmly, why were there so many early reports that that was NOT the case.
Its one of those dark stories I guess we will never know the entire truth of. But I do know if someone told me to go and grab someone believed to be carrying a sucide bomb, just a week afters dozens lost their lives.... I would sure as hell be a bit twitchy and want to get the job done too.

They just need enforcing.
