Cool

Well no problems with MY00, SS downpipe and Hiper Exhaust, pulls very strong and all the way through the rev range

Changing my backbox made a significant gain to performance on mine.

I've got an MY00 with 45k on the clock and it pulls very nicely up to the red line in 2nd and then 3rd. No hesistation and only a little bit of clutch judder in the morning and if you don't give it enough revs pulling away.

Very happy with it

Buckets all day long.

I'm 6'0" and 15.5 Stone (wide too). No problems.

If you do go for the sports, I am sure you will regret it.

Exclamation

Had MY97 - felt quite quick, but had previously been tooling round in Corolla GTI for a couple of years.
Then got MY99 - felt much quicker especially in mid range.
Now got MY00 - not as quick as MY 99.

This is not pure conjecture as my wife has the MY99 these days (long story) so I get to drive both regularly and the MY99 is significantly faster especially in the mid range where it fair hurtles along.

Both cars are standard UK non-modified so nothing to do with any upgrades etc. In fact the difference is so marked I asked the dealer to check if my MY00 was OK. He said it was and that the MY99 had a different engine mapping configuration due to different emissions targets between the two years. To be honest don't know whether he is right or not, but there must be some explanation.

Regards,

tiggers

Very interesting. Is it possible to remap the ECU? or do you have to change it?

well I got a uk 99, and I sat in a 94 wrx (I think it was 94 ish) and mine felt quicker, but saying that the dude driving it was a max power driver and his gear changes took over a week, he even commented on my almost clutch less gear changes, supose used to it from the bike, just blip and change, and dont even come of the gass, done right i get to 3rd swiftly and dont even hit the rev limiter.

But I see that some places don’t do ecu upgrades for 99 ecu?

Thumbs up

Same as you Tiggers, I had a MY99 and now the MY00. MY00 now has loosened up a bit but is still not the same as the MY99. I've got a MY99 ECU ready to plug in and try to see if there is a difference. I know that Babber has done the same and it's made a bad car, good. My car runs sweetly with no hesitation problems etc but is just a bit down on power, so fingers crossed.

PS If this doesn't work I'll get a Link (or an STi7).

Floyd,

Would you let us know how you go, performance wise, with the MY99 ECU after you fit it please m8? I know Babber got an improvement on his car, but it would be good to know if there really is a fault with the MY00 ECUs.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Question

I have to say that my MY98 still feels extremely rapid after owning it for 18 months. It has covered 50k now but I certainly don't think it is any slower or faster than when I got it.

As far as comparing it to a hot hatch, I don't think they come close. I have been sad enough to race plenty of them as well as BMWs and Mercs and my car seems to leave nearly everything else behind (except for that evo 6 that left me behind).

My car is a completely standard UK model.

Considering the acceleration stats you'd have to go pretty far to substantially improve on the Scoob? (If your car doesn't feel much quicker than a hot hatch, then perhaps a 911T wouldn't feel much quicker than your car?)

Perhaps a bike would feel fast?

A 1300kg car that gets about 160bhp at the wheels is sooooo NOT fast, god knows what slow *** sheds ur used to if u think it is. i laughd my head off when i went in a std scooby for the first time, with the owner going "fast init? Nothing comes past me".
twas lame, quick, but about 100bhp from FAST and being able to pull away from anything worth challenging.

not purposley pissin people off, jus saying, thas all, its jus ive never had a slow car (that was ment to b fast) and unless i can happily keep up with or beat "supercars" im not happy - the slowest car ive owned was a tiny r5gtt- which got 167bhp at the wheels (bought it std n made it mental b4 i even drove it, 3months work, never again).
Its jus wat ur used to i suppose.
I promise i wont go harping on bout my cossie! (450bhp, ahem).
Its not a flame, i jus think people dont get what fast actually is sometimes.

Cheers

Some people don't have the money to be able to buy that quality and/or speed of car.... nor throw money at a project to uprate their current car. I personally skint myself buying, and love my scoob, and is fast enough for me as it is, although I may sell one of the kids to buy a nice exhaust when this one is due to be replaced.

Going back to what this thread was originally about, I had a MY99 ECU which I considered to "surge" at the point in temperature just after the engine had warmed thoroughly, but lessened after the car warmed up.

Tony Burns lent me his old MY00 ECU, which although it didn't clear the surging 100%, it went a fair way to eradicating it. I did notice, however, that the "nearly break my back, kicking me in the back of my seat" acceleration that I had in 1st and 2nd particularly wasn't as obvious, however the power "supply" had been smoothed out tremendously.

I've put my MY99 ECU back in, and to be honest I feel that I would much rather have the raw power, than a totally smooth ride with less brown-pant material, if you understand what I'm saying.

Steve you've just said a Standard Scoob is a slow car. In that case you'll agree then that a standard Cossie is an equally slow car???

Oh yes, a standard cossie is VERY slow IMO (thas y theres no std ones left!)

U gotta modify turbo cars really havent u? I mean look at what a difference a full turbo back 3" system does to a scooby- transforms it.

Now scoobs r older more is known bout moddin em and bits r gettin cheaper, so ur scooby owning days will b gettin more n more fun.

Exactly.

When i had 350bhp i raced a (owner said) 550bhp 300zx (heavy 80's nightrider-mobile) on mororway at 2am, kept up but he was slowly pulling away at 150+, so rebuild to 450bhp time! saw him again n wasted him! Bloke round by me with ferrari 360 and ive raced him twice n thas easy (his looks n sounds mad tho), n my mates bro in law has a lambo countash SV (cant spell it!) and i can tear that to bits, but theres always gonna b someone faster than u. I mean to 60 any scooby could do me in the wet, and decent modded ones in the dry due to lack of traction. Ive got an ATB diff and 8.5" rear rims with 255 tyres (arch moddin time!) going on soon to sure that tho! Id cud hold my own down a twisty a road but a b road (donkey track!) a scoob wud b away due to 4wd.
2b hon im only interested in srt8 line spd as i use in on road 99% (findin exotica etc to race n show up!) and flying round corners on the roads is just asking for a fatal collision.
Mayb track days too this year tho.

Cheers

Maybe you can help me out, I need a new starter motor, and I reckon your engine will just about cope, until I can get a proper one

Anyone care to give me a quick tutorial on cleaning the MAF? I've looked and it seems to be held into the housing by some fancy screws.

Please?
