I'll put my pennies worth in ....

MY99 5 door std.

Was travelling at about 40mph (single carriage way) with a Mondeo ST24 infront of me. Single carriage way opens into a dual, and we both had the same idea. Foot to the floor ..... whoosh.

I caught up with ST24, was neck and neck with him as I redlined it in 3rd, changed to 4th, and just powered away, not quickly but steadily. The ST24 just ran out of gearing or power and the look on the drivers face was a picture.

There are cars around that will give the 'Scoob' a good run for it's money, (I have problems with SAXO VTS's on country roads for some reason) but get the 'Scoob' up in the 5K+ rev range and you'll fly.

I'm actually agreeing with Steve a std Turbo is not quick, my MY00 was for sale very soon after I got it for just that reason, due to the money I had set aside to get an Sti insured being required to replace bits borrowed from my car I ended up keeping it.
The car now has somewhere approaching 15k on the clock, and according to the last rolling road day has gained 14bhp in it's first year, bringing it up to standard figures (a tremendous 133bhp at the wheels) and while not being slow, I would not call it fast. It has been to dealers due to its lack of go, but nothing was ever found to be wrong.

I've fitted the MY99 ECU and there does seem to be an improvement but it could be wishful thinking. I went for a short blast tonight straight after fitting the unit and the car seemed to pull harder and longer to the red line. I couldn't do a proper comparison due to the traffic and weather etc but I'll give a better report next week.

I'd really like to run it on the RR at PE to make a comparison, as it was only done there a short while ago 233 bhp/232 lB).

Angry

Hi, im back.

Right then time for Steve's (completley rational) rant---

I dont own a baseball cap, and if i did i wouldnt put it on backwards, i dont even have a stereo in my car (weighs too much, itl only slow me down), or have a 14y/o girl with a greasy perm and an alcopop in my passenger seat (various other, legal, and better looking laydeees instead...).

My spelling is terrible because im at work, so i am hurrying as im not ment to be on here, and im so used to txt messages i end up writing like that all the time. Im i home now so i can spell (sort of!).

The lambo- they weigh LOADS (1500+kg) and are 485bhp i think n geared for over 200mph. My car weighs 1100kg tops (its stripped out), has 450bhp, loads more midrange torque, and lower geared, you do the maths. of course i can outrun it, ive got a much much better power to weight ratio, they only get respectable 0-60 times due to hugely wide tyres.

If u put most of these "supercars" on 215 or so tyres like ur average modded scoob/cosworth/evo then ud see, as most weigh loads so dont have a good poer/weight ratio.

If your car weighs 1200kg or so youd need bout 380bhp to easily pull away from a ferrari 360 if you look at power/weight (if the cars 2wd, unfortunatley 4wd saps loads of power so you'd need more).

The main good point (you lot may say ONLY!) of a cosworth is you can get 400+bhp easily cheaply and quite reliably, wheras on a scoob you cant (yet) so youve never really experienced it (tho many of the heavily modded scoobs could tear most supercars to bits 0-60, even 0-100).

Im not an unfriendy person and dont hate scoobies, or any car (apart from xr2's...), and will happily take people (genuinley interested, non tosser type people) for a blast im my car, or race you if you got a decent car (straight line, more than 1/4 mile as thats too short)and if theres a safe place to do so.

IMO most people on here are decent people but some are really blinkered, and think scoobies are the be all and end all in performance, apart from "supercars" which nothing can touch, well, your wrong.

Some of u can be very snobby, always calling people "maxpower brigade" etc just because they've modded the looks of their car when v.basically, sti, p1, 22b scoobs are modified (boring) uk turbos.

Its silly, I hate tackily modded cars (peco big bore, 3 spokes, DIY badly modded rusty scrappers), but some of you give abuse to cars which are fine.

Andy Tangs old scooby was one of the nicest around but he copped loads of grief.
I think its maybe because of the fact that many of you are 30's middle class boring family people so not into fun anymore (or cant because they responsible and married), apart from getting sucked off by some £300 high class hooker (or wishing they was) instead of your sagging wife. (no offence to the many that arn't).

I dont go on here spouting crap about things i know nothing about, or giving out personal insults to people i dont know for no reason, its just childish (i think the popularity of the "muppet forum" kind of explains some of the regulars mentalities).

Thatl do, im off to bed, itspointless having a girl in there if you dont make the most of her...!

Cheers (to all non-&rseholes)

Steve

going back to the original question, my wife has a golf GTI 1999 T, it feels fast but in reality is't. Whenever I get out of my scoob and drive the Golf I think 'ooh this has got some grunt'. However its all a bit of a con. The Golf has a small low pressure turbo, it boosts very very low in the rev range, spools up incredibly quickly and I think most people would feel that it was a NA car, albeit with a big torquey lump in. The throttle response is far superior to the Subaru - but after the initial point and squirt there is little left and you are best changing up sooner despite the 20valve head.

Have you noticed on track days how there is in reality only a few seconds a lap difference between most cars (light sports excepted) if you translate that to a quick blast up the slip road over a shorter distance you are going to need mad horsepower to have a significant advantage

Sorry to say that i am one of the hard up lot in this forum and can only afford a 1991 Lego estate, however it has got a MRT Group A induction kit and a Motec Chip (it does me).

Before fitting the chip i had trouble getting near a mondeo st24v but since the chip is in place NO WORRIES!! i tend to start to go past him in 3rd now, just off the roundabout (by the way this is a morning thing which happens every day of the week, on the way to work)

Having said that i pulled up to some light yesterday not knowing on the inside lane was a Evo VI, "Whoops, best let him go", started to pull away slowly but so did he, with that, foot hard down!, So did he, 'the race was on'.

I wouldn't say that ever car was quicker but i now he bottled out with the lorry coimng the other way!!! :

Owning and driving a subaru is not just about how quick it it 0-60 etc, I know this is a major part of it but dont forget that its is the fact that a car like the subaru is a classy motor. I own a modded R5 turbo which can out run a scooby (just) up to 80 or so but after that due to my short ratio box I start to top out. and by the time i hit 100ish the scooby start to pull away. Even when I can balst past most cars on the road I still would prefer a scooby because they are a marvel of japanese engineering which are the people that have bought us many a 1000 BHP skyline, supras etc and I cannot wait unit march when I will be getting my first scooby. - Long live the scooby!!!

scooby370beast and juan
its horses for courses mate, i spose. if you like blatting about country lanes, do it in an evo or scooby.
if you like fast A roads, drag races, traffic light grand prix's, do it in a skyline.

never driven an r34, but i hear theyre much more like an r32, bit more twitchy and tail happy. the r33 is perhaps the better cruiser, more refined, especially the non vspec.IMHO, the r33 is better looking too.

what does 21k get you?

evo6 from ralliart, second hand.(my girlfriend had one )

bug eye wrx, no mods, new from subaru uk

r33 gtr, 550bhp and all the mods you could wish for. fast...very fast

you pays yer money etc etc

I understand its hype to gripe on the Impreza's performance,
well I disagree, I beat TTs, 330i, Pugs(easy), T5s (S60 +S70), Leons, Clio 172 and one Mitsu 3000GT...
I didn't have the chance to go out against Porsches but it really doesn't matter if I beat Porsches, everything in the Impreza price range I tear apart,
So my conclusion is that either U.K type cars are **** (can't beleive that) or you're talkink a lot of BS (more like it).
There is no way all the Mags, Myself and you guys (just a year back) thought the Scoobs where fast and today, VTS?? give you trouble.
You guys are bored!!!!

It doesn't matter what car you drive, after a while it'll start to feel slow.

Just on the "UK scoobs are slow" thing, didn't Stef's car do 0-60 in 4.7s with only a backbox and air filter? Doesn't sound too slow to me.

Skyline!!
Might as well call it a whale.
Enormous cars. R34 is supposed to be alright but R33 is too lardy and loose.

Get an evo for real speed and fun!

(flamesuit on) :-)

p.s. ST24 is a very slow car compared to any decent Jap stuff. Over 8 secs 0-60 I believe?

cos the skyline is a lard@ss. Its massive and sloppy compared to the evo.
The evo runs rings round it. Try em both round the twists and see which you think performs best.
