Brietling have some nice peices
I really want the Chopard but have liked the Superleggerra since it came out.

I dont really have a budget but saw both in one of the mags I subscribe to. I purely want one because I like them.

Although I do love Breitling I dont think I could carry it off.....my parents bought me a Seadweller for my 30th and I hardly wear it!

Seadweller is just a cheaply made divers watch with an inflated price tag and it's hardly flashy. Like I said just tell everyone it's a fake, they'll prefer to think that anyway. Nobody likes to hear that your watch is worth more than their car...............

The Chopard is very nice. If you like those kinds of watches, I'd have a look at Oris too. Not dissimilar cost and very nice mechanical movements.

I'n not keen on either. The Chopard has the better heritage. What about an IWC?

Forget about Breitling, Tag, Omega, Rolex - they really are passe these days and a bit chav like.

The Chopards aren't renowned for their reliability- and Breitling have had their issues as well.

I do quite like the Mille Miglia but my watch man has told me to stay well clear, and he's usually right. With the strength of the £ at the moment there are some really good deals if you buy from the US, even when you take in to account the duty. Have a look at TAG Heuer, Omega, Breitling, Cartier, Zenith, Oris, TechnoMarine, Rado, Ebel, Baume & Mercier, Gucci, Movado, Longines, Chopard & Jaeger LeCoultre Watches.

Every time I look at the Chanel watch I think how lovely it looks, then have to remind myself that I have far too mant watches already.

Hope this helps-

Simon

These watch threads always end up the same way, anyonewho has spent an appreciable amount of cash on watch thinks that theirs is the best choice and so defends it.
I think that you would also be surprised how many people can spot the difference between real and fake watches at a distance, mainly other owners!
Would love to hear from a commercial diver, what watch they use

My dive instructor wore a Citizen, and he was no spring chicken. Not sure if that classes as commercial.

The Damasko is a quality watch, another high performing, low pose factor watch brand is Sinn. Plus this pair are made from watchnerdtastic U-Boat Steel

i don't care, I buy a watch for my personal satisfaction. I'd rather wear a £15 Casio than a fake.

I have several expensive watches. Why ? Because i can. I like wearing a decent watch at all times.

Nothing too flash like a Franck Muller or anything, just something that says quality.

In my job i always meet new people and the 2 things i always check out first are their shoes and the watch they are wearing, sad i know but i just do.

Several years ago i met with a guy who said '' Imagine you had no money or credit cards but you still had your watch, you should be able to sell it and get back home from any location in the world ''
Try that with a £3 Casio.
If you can afford it spend it, how many on here blow ££££££'s on power upgrades for their cars and dont bat an eyelid.

Generally purpose built dive timers IIRC.

Surprised at Nacro's comment. He used to be a fan of the vintage Sea Dwellers.

And they were no more expensively made than the new ones.

Have two G Shocks - One "smart" one with black metal strap (cockpit) for every day use, one all digi one for surfing and larking about.
Both under £120, both utterly reliable, both keep amazing time, both do more than just look "good", neither says "I have a small appendage, here's a watch to make up for it"

I'm still a *BIG* fan of them new and vintage, as an owner you have to admit they are cheaply made however, particularly the bracelet.

I love my Rolexes particularly the timeless classics like SD and Sub but I don't kid myself that I'm not paying a huge premium over something like an Omega merely for the Rolex name.

I think the Chanel one lOOks the best.

I got me a nice watch for my wedding present. Knowing/Hoping it would be one watch i could keep forever and do anything in it.

I go the gym, dive, diy (inc painting & building) and my Tag has not a scratch on it. Doesn't jump out lOOk at me either.

I don't see the problem with spending a lot on something you like.

Fair point on the bracelet - although I'be never had an oyster bracelet or clasp one fail on me in, what, 19 odd years

Which cannot be said for apparently "better" bracelets/clasps.

And yes, sadly, there is the "brand" premium. Having said that, the same applies to most of the better known brands. Nothing but sound business sense

Stranded in the outback no money or anything, ohh i will just use a phone and wire some cash to the nearest HSBC behind that sand dune over there.

Ohh hello her comes a local will help me but wants something in return, hence where a good watch worth something may come in handy if you need to barter.

You missed the point of the guys comment completely.

I'm not sure the barter value of a quality timepiece is of any importance but it is true to say they have a negotiable value. Perhaps useful if you're an international man of mystery I dare say.

What is more to the point is something I've mentioned before, buy the right watch and you'll have something that doesn't depreciate and might even make you a bob or two if you decide to sell it.

I know people buy what they like, and have all sorts of different tastes. But I never figured out why people are prepared to shell out large amounts for fashion watches. Essentially a cheap generic movement, case, bracelet, with styling and logo from some 'fashion brand', Gucci, CK, Ellesse, Chanel, Ferrari etc.

I mean, if you want a decent watch, why not choose one from a company which has a long and proven history of making decent watches, rather than one famous for making womens perfume, tracksuits, cars, etc. rather than watches?

Good points there Iwan.

I agree with what you have said, hence why i tend to go for a watch maker with some pedigree.

I've just bought an Invicta Pro Diver automatic for $100 to wear to work.

My Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date can now sit at home most days, as I often go into very undesirable areas, in fact it's as ghetto as ghetto gets, and I don't want to lose it!

I've had the Invicta on for an hour, it's meant to look like a Submariner or a GMT Master.

The tick of the second hand is very clumsy, but for the price it has a nice enough weight and feel and looks alright!

My target watch at the moment is a 40mm platinum Yachtmaster.

If you want a Rolex how about a new limited edition Milgauss? I have one on order not because it's my favourite but merely as I'll be able to sell it a year down the line, having used it, for more than I paid for it.

Oh yes of course, everyone with any money immediately buys a £4k+ watch

You see lots of people have money because they spend what they have wisely.
I have a lot of friends and relatives who have proper reserves of money, not just a half decent salary.
Not one has a flashy watch.
The only person I know with a flashy watch is up to his eyeballs in debt.

A lot of expensive things work better - cars, hifis, etc - flashy watches need servicing, lose/gain a shocking amount of time, have naff all functions, and need to be handled like a Ming vase.

A total marketing led mugs game.

I'd agree there's a fair amount of marketing and advertising at play here. However your other comments are incorrect other than the 'naff all functions'- other than telling the time that is which is one of the main reasons I use a watch.

There are some that need careful handling, however most of my collection other than the vintage pieces are worn like you would wear a G-Shock and have never suffered failures or significant damage.

As for being a mugs game have you ever made in excess of a £1000 on one of your watches after 2 years of wear?
