The most scared I hae been on a fixed was trotting downhill at 35mph with a nice lefthand bend at the bottom of the hill it felt like my knees were going to burst into flames (keep pedaling, keep pedaling, keep pedaling, keep pedaling)

This hill is part of our Saturday club run and is no problem when riding gears, but when on the fixed you really have to telling yourself to pedal. Learning to ride fixed I did knee myself in the chin when entering my street, stop pedaling and it soon tells you to move your leg out of the way

It's very good for leg strength. I do a lot of hills on the fixed, getting back on gears feels like cheating in a very fast way

I only use solid cycling shoes for the support it affords me (my right knee gave me issues after only 6 miles without them)

Can you get non - spd pedals and solid shoes? I've had a few too many close calls getting the twist in time to be comfortable with spd's in traffic

Kieran - I wear Shimano SPD shoes (the sort that look like trainers) with flat pedals - get the stiff sole (and efficiency) without the potential death of not being able to unclip and they are okay(ish) to walk around in.

Excellent, and thank you. They're just what I need.

Bit of an **** I spent so bloody much on the pedals and shoes

I think these are the pedals I have on the bike at the mo... Shimano Ultegra PD 6610 SPD-SL OE Pedals for £49.99 | Shimano Pedals - Road Clip-In | Cycle | Wiggle

Guess I need to get a pair of flat pedals as well now... Mind you, it's easy to change and if I'm doing a run in the country it takes seconds to swap the pedals and I can leave the clips on my existing shoes. Mine are like these: Shimano R075 Road Shoes for £53.99 | Shimano Shoes - Cycle Road | Cycle | Wiggle

Kieran - I've got these:

MT20 Shoes - CycleExpress and I use DMR V8s pedals.

Crank Bros do a sort of hybrid egg beater/spd called the "Hammer" - I might give them a try at some stage.

Has anyone bought a bike on the cycle to work scheme?

I've looked at the figures and it really looks like you could save a fortune on a decent commuter.

(oh, and managed to fall into the ONLY nettle patch for miles one time, thanks to my cleats locking me onto the bike Gawd that stung)

I don't know what a ti frame is but it's just a normal mountain bike. Pictured with road tyres, but most pof the time it has wider XC tyres

Did the Liverpool - Chester - Liverpool ride for charidee on my Claud Butler MTB in July... Using it on road tyres at the mo just to build up some stamina and road miles, but will prob go back to the nobblys in a few weeks when winter sets in.
Normally average a respectable 50 miles a week, but with the house move, I havent been out on it for 2 weeks. Going to go out this afternoon for an hour though for a mooch.
As for lycra - I started wearing cycling shorts under my normal shorts because the padding is a bonus but wouldnt be seen dead in a proper lycra kit . If I wanted to be in the village people I'd go to the YMCA dressed as an indian chief instead

slight development on the SPD front... I didn't know you could get two-sided pedals... flat one side and cleated the other. This would be perfect for me I reckon as it means I just need the new shoes and fit the cleats from the new pedals to my road shoes....

(oh, and my work place is investigating the cycle to work scheme, so I might be able to get a good bike for about half price)

I have shimano Deore DX clipless platforms.

Basically a platform pedal with a pop up binding in the middle. So you can wear either cleated shoes or normals (the binding folds down under foot pressure).

Liking your Epic a LOT - nearly got one but went for HT in the end as I'm a bit **** about pedal enery losses and weight! Do you like it?

I "run" the Cycle 2 Work scheme for our company - Seems good to me.

Well the jury is still out on that one, i'll be racing it for the first time in a race where I used the Orange HT last year. It's certainly is faster XC but slower on the road. Even though it has the brain shock and everything set to stiff, the fact it weighs 12lbs more than my HT means it's more hard work on a hard surface.

orange ev02 ltd edition weighs in at 17lbs. It flyes on tarmac
Epic weighs 29lbs. Light for a XC but you can feel the difference over the orange in terms of extra weight on the tarmac

I did the etape du tour in 2002 which was great, ride my 7 year old Giant compact frame, everything has been replaced due to crash damage other than the frame, which seems bomb proof. Don't ride as much as I did (used to be 10-12 hours a week) but still love it !
