With a little effort London can be very cheap. We stayed on Saturday night in a 5* hotel (Grange city) which cost £68+vat for the two of us and included continental brekky as well. Parked the car free as well in Kensington .
Bought a day travelcard to use on Sat for a fiver.
We usually go up on megabus for £1 each way if booked early or from £22 return on the train from Cardiff.
A bargain if you ask me.

Thats the spirit, nothing like forward planning
Apart from hotel prices, and even then, only some, I dont really see WHAT is so expensive about London.
OK Harvester's etc are cheaper up north, taxi's (of the black cab sort) are a rip off but there are options.
Public transport, daily travel cards sort that out if your out and about..
I think most capital cities tend to have a slightly higher price on them, something to do with demand and desirability
If you get about its still an amazing place to see, and well worth it imo

London's as expensive as you want it to be. Travel and eating can be quite inexpensive if you know were and when to go. On the other hand you can blow a stack of cash in one go with beers starting at £15 a bottle and starters at £30.
Plan ahead and ALWAYS carry an AtoZ (I commute every day and I still carry one!)

Sheffield?
Backward, rough and not particularly friendly. Of all the places I've lived it's the one place I would not go back to. Like Leeds or Manchester, but without the character.
London's just your typical massive city with all the rip-off places aimed at those on a visit - all those moaning.
Once you know where to go and what you want it's no more expensive than any other city (housing excepted).
I moved away from London a couple of years back and where I live now (small, expensive London satellite town) it's more expensive to buy a pint in most pubs, petrol's more expensive and the restaurants are sh1te, and again, more expensive like-for-like.
London is just tiring after a while, and the quality of life is poor, as are public services. Good to experience for a few years, but not a place I'd ever want to bring kids up.

Sheffield is the safest, friendliest city in the country. How you can deride Sheffield (and other cities in the North of the country, where most of them are, by the way) in favour of London I do not know. The most 'backward', ignorant, squalid and unwelcoming city I have ever visited is that London.

Im seeing a pattern here.
If you live somewhere and are used to it, it seems to have less problems than other areas.
London for all its sins is really not as disgusting as people seem to make out.
Curious to know what parts of London some have visited to form this opinon.
Im pretty sure Sheffield has some pretty undesirable areas too, and things such as a police force, and ASBO's etc.
Visited a fair few cities in my days, and as I say, for all its sins London is not a bad place really.

I dont particularly like Sheffield, quite the opposite in fact, but I do appreciate it. I have lived and worked in the South East too so I speak from experience. Im not at all 'Northern' in the way that I talk either, so I think that my view wasnt tainted by any perceived anti-Northerness...

Any city is as expensive (generally) as you want it to be, housing aside.
London has some great points, and some bad ones. Like anywhere really.
Down on business a fair amount. Heathrow/Gatwick Expresses make it easy to get in and out.
What I don't like about central london is that (tourists aside) the level of "**** you" attitude seems much higher than you get in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, etc.
Probably simply a function of the sheer population numbers.

Yeah number dont help at all, and the rush hour is something that no one should have to go through. Thank god I dont lol.
Other than that, fine foods, amazing shows, great sights, amazing culture etc.
Still seems pretty popular to a LOT of people.
I dont think 7/7 and 9/11 did anything for visitors to the country.
Given the sheer number of people, cars and things going on, I think London functions pretty well.
Even housing is not THAT bad if you live in the right areas. Prices for buying are rather stupid I have to agree.

I quite like London for a visit, but wouldn't choose to live there even if I could afford to. I can see the attraction of city life if you're single and childless though.
York isn't exactly is kicking city, but I can get in for free, or drive 1 mile from home, and be on twisy de-resticted quiet roads with no speed camera for tens of miles.

?To live somewhere nice in London costs £££££ unless you live right out on the edge - even then it's still expensive.

I mean the conditions etc. Some believe that London is one big housing estate.
Prices anywhere in London are plain stupid.
As for overprices ****hole... Some areas are indeed like that. Others are actually quite nice.
