Hmmm.......

You sound very sure about this - and I am not a dealer btw

I cannot see how even a professional can be expected to anticipate faults like this that he, in good faith, wasn't aware of when he checked the vehicle before selling. Cars do break down and you can't pin it all on the dealer surely? Obviously a totally different matter if dealer knew about the problem and "forgot" to mention it. I doubt if an AA check would pick up all likely future faults. But that is why I asked. dl

The simple definition of a dealer ( or trader ) is 'someone who buys an item with the intention of selling at a profit' - i.e. basically someone who isnt just selling their own personal item such as their own car.

If someone buys a car, runs it for a few months as their own, then sells it, technically they would not be a dealer, but if they are doing this a few times a year, then they would legally be classed as a dealer ( certainly the tax office would be VERY interested in having a chat with them ).

If you buy a car from a dealer ( unless it is specifically a trade sale, which is different ) then the car should be free of any mechanical defects unless these are pointed out to you before you buy.

If I were in the OP's position, I would be returning the car asap and telling the dealer I am rejecting it. Get shot and go and buy something else !

p.s. something like a belt going is really down to bad luck if not covered by the warranty - if it is something the garage couldnt reasonably predict happening, then they wouldnt be liable.

Dealers are basically sharks and Range Rovers are pretty badly built and unreliable for what they cost, I know people who has spent similar amounts and more than yourself to have the car spend more time in the garage.

I have just bought a Saab 9-3 and its ok but the dealer advertised it as including a full MOT and service, sure enough the MOT, Tax and new tyres had been done but the oil was still black and on the low end of the dipstick, I was insistent that the right oil be used and he assusred me they service to the book, it hadn't even been changed of that I am certain so Monday he gets a phone call. The car seems fine but I dont like having the p1ss taken when I paid a good price for the car, the oil was fairly low so he cant be arsed changing it, say I do 5,000 miles and it uses a little as a lot of cars do I am left with a seized engine, its a shame as otherwise he was very proffesional.

I was thinking I would change it myself anyway as garages will put 20/50 autostores multigrade in at 10 quid and pocket the difference in price against Mobil one.

As in the past, I have learnt that if you want something doing properly, do it yourself !

Hope you get your Range Rover sorted soon.

I think it's actually "free of MAJOR mechanical defects"... and there hangs the issue. What is major???

Steering wheel misaligned... certainly not 'major'

Knackered diff.... probably major, but did it develop the fault after it was purchased - through mis-use etc. or did the fault exist at the time of purchase, etc.

All very difficult to argue (OK, as we've seen here, it's easy to argue about it) but very difficult to prove one way or the other... and if the OP didn't buy a warranty with the vehicle then I'm sure the dealer's patience will have worn out by now fixing "just about every mechanical defect" that aren't major (mirrors for example) at his whim.... and for how long??? (1 mth / 3 mths / 6 mths...."Oh it's December and I've just noticed, the heated rear screen has a non-working element in it - please fix it"???)

Has the OP had any more movement on this and either (a) managed to get a refund on it (I doubt it...) or had everything fixed under a warranty he purchased, or (b) been told to go away by the dealer , and/or (c) told he hasn't really got a leg to stand on by the CAB.... or something else???
