Covering sick is fine but after you have work/walk/carried 16kilo bags for 8 hours already ,i think it is a bit much. we wont have a choice if this come into play, at the mo I dont want to do the overtime and cant be made too, Job and finish for me. like i told my manager when the post was 3 hours late last week. "if i was a man i would be going home and sitting on me A**e and would have anything else to do for the rest of the day"

Now I really dont mean to insult anyone here, but posties (by nature of their work) can't have done very well at school, which means they will only ever earn so much.

Now, if a company needs to cut costs, it normally starts with benefits and heads. I know, cos I work for Nationwide B.S. and am being laid off next week!

So, if you don't like what your employer is doing, look for another job. NOT stop a service this country relies on for 4 fecking days!!!!!!

Don't expect public support. Certainly don't expect me to toot as I drive by! I may infact come to your houses and glue up you letter boxes, then when you are awaiting an important document, you won't receive it, like the rest of us!

Strike action - its like going back to the 80's. And thats progress eh???

Sell it / privatise it. Much prefer city link for parcels anyway.

I'll get off my high horse now! :-)

the odd mistake would be fine, but not at least once per week.

i`m still hoping my computer game arrives that went missing at the beginning of the year

i`m at the post office nearly everyday to do some banking and even the postmaster that runs it has no sympathy for the people striking, the amount of times i have had head office ring me up because the daily returns have not made the short journey down to high wycombe from newcastle is staggering.

these are all posted with pre printed address labels, no mistakes, perfectly easy to read, couldn't make it any easier for the people to deliver but they seam to never make it.

a week long promotion, all the vouchers need to be posted down to high wycombe for the discounts to be valid, ohh what a suprise, they never made it yet again i end up having to pay the difference in price myself

i would bet that most of the public have no support for them either to be honest.

I just wanted to say something about Royal Mail and competition from the private sector. People say they will switch to TNT/DHL or whatever, but who delivers the mail to your door? It's still the postman. The other firms just come along and take away the profitable part from RM, charge the customer less, then expect RM to deliver the final mile for a cut price (enforced by the regulator/government). So, it's not really competition as such. If it was true competition, RM could say "OK, you want to take the business away? Fine, you deliver it to the middle of nowhere..." But it doesn't work like that. Or they could agree to it, but say they have to pay the same as everyone else for RM to deliver the last bit.

I understand people's frustrations, but there is so much more to the story in most cases. For me, the most annoying thing is the way it has been 'opened up to competition', but not on a level playing field. We end up sorting all the mail, and more often than not it's mail from all the competition. Then they turn around and say the business is going down the drain because of competition and we should put up with all the changes.

They should have had more backbone, and told Postcomm/the government to get lost. But they just rolled over and watched it get ruined.

I don't know why I am getting angry about it, as it's just a second job to me, but it's hard to see people putting Royal Mail down when they only have half the facts. The union has not done enough to inform the public of the other side of the argument.

I like reading stuff like this. As a postman, I can sense this attitude from people I deliver mail to, particularly in offices etc.. They talk down to you, like you're thick. I get a perverse sense of self satisfaction that they have completely misjudged me, and don't know the whole story. You shouldn't make sweeping judgements.

That's a very fair point. Our postman is a top bloke, and far from thick. He does the job through choice, and he likes it. Incidentally, he's not at all in favour of the strikes and most of his direct colleagues are not entertaining them.

So get your lazy (but clever) **** back to work

LOL, sorry..

All joking aside, can you answer my last question above?

So from your post you are making an assumption that all postmen/women are stupid backward folk from the hill's

Also, commenting on the above post you made, you are being laid off next week, now this speak's volumes to me,the word's "weakest link" spring to mind on this one!

not doing very well at school ????????

I now work for the royal mail, must agree with the majority of poster's on this thread,i for one DO NOT want to strike and loose money,i worked through the last lot of strike's,and what thanks do i receive personally for a little commitment........Zero,all i get is the silent treatment at work, and called a scab behind my back by the in-bred narrow minded "miner's strike/less we forget" attitude that comes along with them!

I am in no way "under-educated" previously worked as a regional manager for a supermarket chain earning 40K a year, reason for change of career ????? Did i get made redundant due to being "un-educated" nope,i left with my pockets full of gold, and took a job as a rural van driver(a-la postman pat) so i could have more quality time with the family, drive my brand spanking new sti more, and fettle the garden

please, please people more fact's needed surrounding the strike's,as the majority of posting's on this thread only believe what the see on the new's or read on t'internet......

I would agree with some post's,a vast amount of postmen and women are just union-ite's and follow like little lost sheep, every discussion in our office revolve's around one postie stating everything "from a union" email day in,day out and pesonally would love to see him fall from the nearest bridge

also,i would say around half of my local office are complete and utterly bone idle, and take far too long to do a walk/route and just milk the overtime because they get away with it

these are the people the royal mail want shut of in the shake up,but the law say's your not allowed to discriminate against lazy T***'s and sack them on the grounds of being useless, you must re-train them

Moving the retirement age from 60 to 65 hasnt gone down too well with the elder workforce,as most of my office are near that age,so i would love them to keep it at 60,so i could see the back of the old moaning slow git's and employ some young fit totty

anyhow enough ranting,i hope personally, and as a whole this strike action is over quickly,as it's affecting my ebay profits

regards marcus

to be fair. i think most people who deal with the "general public" get this to some extent, i myself had it about 10 mins ago when somebody pulled up at the carwash (i`m working all day by myself due to staff holidays) opened his window and put the money into my hand without even saying anything (i did say "hello mate" ) and just looked at me like i was stupid

no "i would like the 2.40 wash please" "can i have the 2.40 please"
nothing, this pissed me off so much i ended up kicking off with him, told him he was a rude arrogant ***** and banned his *** from the site

i have never thought of postmen as "backward dumb folk" i always thought my problems stemed from whoever puts the mail into the little bundles (our business mail is always in an elastic band as there is quite a bit)

if the postman is the bloke who actually bundles them up, then i suppose they are a bit thick

i had a 2 paper rounds as a kid, i had the address`s written on each paper just like a letter, its not that hard

Actually I don't know. I only joined the union recently. It seems from some of the stuff that comes out now though, that RM never really fought their corner, and there were things they could have done to lessen the impact of competition. I don't think it's competition that is the problem as such, it is the rules which they have to play under that are bad for RM.

I'm not at home at the moment, so don't have the stuff, but I know that there were various actions that could have been taken that were passed on. I think the union described it as 'commercial suicide', almost like they'd hit the self destruct button by allowing all the conditions to go through unchallenged.

**** me that was said tongue in cheek!

Main point is, unions **** up any chance the postal service will have of putting things right, but like sheep, you all follow them out.

YOU yes YOU posties are crippling this country. If RM need to reduce costs, like I said it'll start with you guys unfortunately. Thats life. Get another job and move on.

You can come and join me if ya like and you can have my frame in front of you and you can sort and deliver the mail for a week or 2.

People say we must be thick and that we didnt do well at school but you would be very surprised at what we have to do.

The offer is there

Replace "The unions" with "The management" and funnily enough that sentence is still completely true.

As with all industrial disputes, this has far more to do with rubbish managenent than militant unions.

Posties...

Sorting mail isn't exactly difficult.... and delivering it can't be that hard.... so stop moaning and get your ***'s back to work....

If you don't like it leave and find something better.... rather than holding the country to ransom because you are having to work 'harder' all of a sudden....

If I was in the RM I'd sack the lot of you time wasters, and employ people that wanted to work!!

While it is annoying and always seems to happen at the worst times for me this year lol, I can understand it after coming across various points raised. Like Snazy, I too get my mail at anywhere between 1 and 3pm lol but I always tell the postie thanks when I see him at weekends or shout it at the door etc when the post pops through. In turn he goes out of his way to make sure that one way or another I get all my recorded and specials even when I am not at home which he really doesn't have to at all. Rain or shine at the end of the day we get our post to our doorstep

With all people and all jobs you get hard workers and you get lazy bums and I find that courtesy still goes a long way

Also, when I needed to get some bits that were being delivered to work and there was a strike on I simply went to the local sorting office and got all the company's mail, the strikers kept out of my way and the Manager was very helpful and apolagetic to boot! If you are desperate for something again be polite and try popping down there and trying your luck.

THank you for that.

Some people do think we are only there to deliver their post and that we should be there at 9am on the dot. but as we dont get out of the office (in our area) till 9.30ish after sorting the post then it is hard to keep everyone happy. and someone has to be last. I have a lot of poeple working from home in the village i deliver, so it cant be helped. I do go out of my way to help my customers aswell, even going to the local shop for the OAPs to get their milk bread and papers. I have known most of the poeple in the village for nearly 20 years and even sent my kids to their school. most are very friendly and offer cups of tea if i look shot lol.

Nice to see a grateful person on here instead of not so grateful slagging us off. seems to me that the ungratefukl are the ones that think we are only there to deliver their post to them and nobody else matter. and its nice to see that they (some) have time to go on scoobynet while at WORK and put us posties down.

Bye for now off shopping with a fellow STRIKER.

MR FOOTLONG THANK YOU AGAIN
