My mate and his wife took me and my wife to Vegas for 4 nights, cost was 12k......plus 600 dollars in the naked lap dance club which he paid for as well and then another 500 quid on a handbag to keep her happy after we rolled in at 5:30 in the morning after our night out......them lap dance clubs ain't half addictive Most I have spent was 4k on a 2 week trip to Dubia.

Most of our (2 adults - no kids) holidays are taken up chasing rally cars through forests which is great but we also try to have a couple of non-rally holidays each year too. We definitely prefer self catering and always rent cottages, usually in Scotland as we love the place and can't get enough of it As a result our holidays are cheap which mean more of them each year

Last year we had a week in a cottage in Skye (Christmas/New Year) £500, week in a cottage in Sweden for the WRC (Feb) £800, week in a cottage in Scotland (June) £500, week in Germany for the WRC (Aug) £800, week in Wales for Rally GB (Dec) £250, another week in a cottage in Skye (Dec) £500 plus 3 lots of four day long weekends at various other rallies and various other weekend breaks. That all adds up to less than £3,500 for over 10 holidays all of which we thoroughly enjoyed, bargain!!

This year has been pretty much the same except we didn't do Sweden but spent an extra week in Scotland instead

And far better to do that all year than have two weeks with the Chavs and larger louts on some rip off foriegn package holiday. IMO

this year it cost us before spending money 6k to take the kids to Florida again, love the place been 4 times, 3 of which were in the last 3 years, it don't matter what it costs it's what you do on it that counts & if you enjoy yourself no amount of money can make up for that.
We also have a holiday usually aprilish to somewhere in spain costs about £400-500 and it is just as much fun.

Fitzscoob - St Lucia the only place to stay is the Jalouisie Plantation - its a 5 star resort which situated and has exclusive access to the forest, beach and bay between the 2 pitons (mountains) which is what St Lucia is most famous for. Its quite simply a fabulous location.

I would get in their soon though as the resort is about to go seriously upmarket and more expensive.

Hi all... not sure if this is allowed but..... a few have mentioned Florida and as it happens my sister has some houses in Kissimme just 4 miles from the entrance to Disney. All houses with their own pools and if you mention me her bro she should hopefully offer some sort of discount ( hopefully as she doesn't konw I'm posting).
Check out her site abracadabrarentals.com

I'm sure if this kind of lead / post isn't allowed it will be removed.... just trying to help.

As for me I don't like spending too much on hols perhaps I'm just mean..

For me, a holiday cost is bargain economy class plane tickets, plus an appropriate amount per night for hotels and food; both of which are staples rather than luxuries, so B&B or 3-star etc, and no £100 per head restaurants. This is how I plan what it will/should cost. The formula is the same whether we're driving round Spain and camping (I didn't bother calculating fuel cost), or flying to Japan for a month (done both in the last couple of years).

As for what it actually DOES cost - I learned a long time ago that the best way to ruin a holiday was to calculate exactly how much it cost me. Made that mistake once - never again! If it's within budget above, and I don't get an overdraft, it's good enough for me

Holidays are for relaxing, not playing the stressed accountant for a week.

I have been tempted to book the moon palace, I have been told its excellent there.

I have spent a fortune on holidays over the last couple of years. Two years ago my daughter had never been out of this country but i have since taken my family to Las Vegas, Malibu, Disney land orlando, Alcudia and the domincan republic. Egypt is already sorted for christmas

If you want to save a bit of money and get better hotels than the Carribean you should head to the Far-East/SE Asia.

Malaysian/Indonesian/ resorts are some of the best in the world and you can easily get 5 star resorts for £50 a night. Also their doesn't tend to be the seasonal variation over there as much. ie British school holidays generaly have no impact on prices.

Agree with the above.

You can get some cracking deals to the Far East. Did our honeymoon at the Bali Hilton, one of the best Hotels on the Island, short only of the VERY impressive Four Seasons.

Had two weeks there, B+B, plus Economy flights on Singapore Airlines (champagne is served as standard in Economy on Singapore), for £900 each.

Fantastic value for what was a Kuoni package. Included transfers, taxes, access to the Kuoni rep, Honeymoon meant an upgraded room, etc. etc.

I go through Flight Centre, who always have great promotions on, if I can't get something good through work.

Did similar thing with Sri Lanka more recently, again through Flight Centre. They can get discounted rates for even the most luxurious places, you just have to ask. Got an anniverary trip to the Burj al Arab in Dubai down to around £400 per night! Couldn't really afford to eat or drink too much there though!

Decent Far East and Middle East locations do offer excellent value for money as everything is so dirt cheap out there and you can haggle for almost anything!

I generally try to spend as little as possible while trying to get the most I can.

I get some cracking deals through work, as mentioned above. Recently did a luxury trip to NY, Club Class, both directions with BA, (surprisingly good), hired one of those big, Chrysler sedans while I was there for the week, friend has a big pad, so stayed there. Total cost for me and the Missus approx £500. No surprise to say I try to go every year!

Best one I ever did though was two weeks in Miami, Virgin flights, special escort off the plane, straight through, no questions, into a waiting car, whisked off to a very exclusve villa in Biscayne Bay, South Beach. (apparently Gloria Estefan was a neighbour) food, drink and car all chucked in, for FREE! Wife sorted this one out for me, her work paid for it, was a once in a lifetime event.

I looked at that... couldn't be arsed with having to wait for buses/get buses between my hut and the beach...

Prefer to fall out of my room onto a beach

As a few have said above, if you want luxury/exotic on the cheap(ish) then try the far east. If you get it right, fantastic beaches, great weather and the best food in the world

We go on holiday to enjoy ourselves, no score points.

With miles of gorgeous coastline, a speed boat to play with, surf, horses to ride, great restaurants to eat in, holidays aren't such a big priority to us.

Too many people live for holidays, spend a fortune on them and come back disappointed.

We book each part separately and usually wing it - had some fantastic suprises along the way.

Yep same here, I work with people who work 7 days a week all year for 2 weeks away on a long haul. What's the point? Where's the life?
I need to be getting away at least once a month.

Cheers

I agree, once a month is about right.

I'll have spent about 40 nights out of the country this time next week.

..and that's by being frugal with my cash.

But as Matteeboy was suggesting you dont need loads of cash and to be out of the UK to enjoy a break.

I get down to Matteeboy's area at least three or four times a year.
It wont get you any bragging points about how much it cost or how far it is but you get fantastic surf, great atmosphere (If you know where to go), some excellent restuarants even if you dont pay Rick and Jamie's prices.
There are many area's where the UK can offer upmarket breaks for little money, the lakes, lochs of Scotland etc. Just stay away form the main tourist areas and times.

Yes everyone enjoys a main holiday but there's no need to stop at home the rest of the year.

Cheers

Problem is mate that like many, me included, the weather is everything. Cornwall may have 'gorgeous coastline' but it means squat diddly to me if its pissing down with rain.
I agree though that shorter frequent breaks are the way to go

Get to the Lakes in winter, quiet, scenery is suberb and the air will put some hairs on your chest.

Or try the Highlands in Autumn, stunning.
