We had a Seat Alhambra last week while the Astra was being sorted.
Not my cup of tea but a seriously handy piece of kit - loads of storage space, seats do all sorts and not too awful to drive.
It was a hire car with 59k on it and 04 reg (had to use a slightly dodgy hire firm!) but was still spotless.

Bob, the prelude to the S-Max is the Toyota Avensis Verso. I've just looked on autotrader and there are tons there, well within your budget (5k and up). I give no guarantee about how it drives (I think I read that they were a bit agricultural).
Of course, if you buy at that price and take it to Fensport with the change, you may well have a nice car that keeps a healthy speed on the motorway
If you want something a bit smaller you can get a Corolla Verso, again well within budget, but again not renowned for being sporty.

From what I hear, don't bother driving a petrol one. Diesel gives more torque for the weight, and a 500-quid chip will give 30% extra (see link above). I just learned that the very new ones have much better engines, but I think they're out of your price bracket.

Galaxy is the same thing with more space, generally cheaper to buy new and second hand, an S-Max is a good car but say what you want, no people carrier is cool in any way.

Still not going to get the new model Galaxy for £9k though. Dont rate the old one myself.
