IMHO

I do not believe that you can be 'done' for accelerating to fast. you could be if you lost traction/control of the vehicle whilst acceleration as this would constitute dangerous driving or such like. I know this as I was done for it!

It would be difficult if not impossible to prove you where not causing a hazard/danger to yourself or other road users. As long as your car was under control and you where not braking the speed limit (well almost).

You cannot really really draw a clear line as to whether you where accelerating to hard/fast and how/what do you measure it againt there is no guide for this!. the only time this is a problem is as I stated above.

IMHO the Police where just a bit miffed, You gotta faster car, could not legitimately do you so did the next best thing - Sad really!

I have no axe to grind as far as our Police force goes.
I do however object to being given a visual 'once over' every time a police car pulls up next to me. I might feel duifferently if my car had been knicked and they caught the scum.
It is a pain and also embarrasing, especially if i have clients/friends in the car.

In fact, next time a cop car is behind you check your mirror. Nine times out of ten, you'll see them on the radio checking your reg. / details.

On another note, I got stopped on the M4 doing 87. Got a ticket and 3 points. And while they're waiting for the ownership clarification the driver asks if the car's as good as it's reputation makes out.

"What's your 0-60"
"How does it pull in third"

to which I replied

"Well I'm not going to tell you am I?"

Isn't the 'correct' term for a 'slip-road' actually an 'Acceleration Lane'.

There are places around here where some idiotic people drive down the slip-road and then STOP and give way!

The 'excessive acceleration' thing will only apply if you startle other road users, mostly pedestrians or people who pull out in front of you at roundabouts

Now this is a fairly draconian law and i'm not 100% sure if it still exits but its worth a thought

Murder,
Rape,
Assault,
Mugging,
Robbery,
Accelerating too hard.
Says a lot about our "friends" in blue.
Got pulled over once in my MR2 a few years ago at 3:00am on a B road.
" I take it you know where we picked you up "
"Yes" I replied.
"I know your car can do it, but what would you do if something was coming the other way?"
I did not have the guts to say nothing as long as they were on their side of the road as my rear tyres were slicks.
With a friendly warning he let me go.
What he would do now that I own a scoob and go down the same road much faster I can only guess.

Slightly off topic, if they are going to do us for doing 80ish in a 60 zone, when are they going to do all the arseholes who drive everywhere at 40, who stop at rounabouts when there is nothing coming and the idiots who go round motorway roundabouts ( 60 zone ) at 30?
The number of times I have under or over taken something on a motorway rounabout ( in full view of our "friends" in blue), or pulled out of a junction only to have to slame the brakes on is a joke.

From THE REAL Pete Lewis

Daniel here. I just signed up specifically to answer people's question on this.
Whether you choose to believe me or not is your choice.

I've raced go karts for many years and have completed across Europe with the best. Including le man's.

I drive a standard 116i BMW. As I don't see point of sports car. I just let out my race demon on tracks as you should.

So you can imagine I'm far better than the average Joe and especially a cop.

Can you get pulled over for accelerating. Yes..any type of accelerating a coppers bias doesn't like.
usually when there outclassed. Which isn't hard in my case.

Even if you don't speed.
they will do you for any probable cause.

Depends on coppers mood. They will simply slap you with undue care and attention.

I was pulled over yesterday. Where I accelerated upto to 30 quicker than the guy on my right onto a roundabout to filter on other side of roundabout. If I didn't. It would of caused a knock on effect of stagnant cars on roundabout.

Copper behind went from 1 car behind to 4 cars behind.

They decided to follow me for a short while very close to my rear. Likely trying to make me break an actual law. They then pull me over for warning.

Cars are getting ever quicker with electric cars now on the scene... And it's now even illegal to accelerate to fast upto the speed limit.

Yes some cops will just let you off with a warning. Even though you haven't technically done anything wrong.

Now. If I was accelerating to fast with undue care of my surroundings and have proof of this. I would understand.

But they have power to give you 3 points on the spot and test you every single shape.
I got pulled over once cos copper said I should of gone slower than 30mph in a 30mph. Started reading me my rights. Then tested me for drugs. And history check... Slapped me with 3 points.

The day cars can drive themselves... I'll be on it.
