Its not irrelivant so to speak. Its on topic of the breed and the habit of using a lead, so lets not be harsh on the guy
What is the exact goal of the thread to find out?
You say you want tips on keeping your dog safe...
1/ Use a lead so you have control over the dog and can get it out of harms way.
2/ Try and plan a route which is not heavy with canine traffic.
3/ If you see an undesirable with a dog ahead, cross, change direction etc.
At the end of the day its far from a perfect world out there, and we all need to take courses of action that we dont like. Sadly, avoiding confrontation and changing a route is becoming a part of every day life.
I can relate to the worry of the dog being injured, but at the end of the day you could walk past a well trained dog on a lead, with yours off the lead, and one sniff or nip in the wrong place and the nicest of dogs would retaliate.
All dogs being on leads allows us the owners to keep control of the dog, and avoid such occurances.
If you are in a confined space where you know that there is no chance of another unknown dog appearing, off the lead is fine.

Whats it got to do with this thread? you were the one who started going on about a certain breed being a chav dog and then as usual people started slating staffies, all he was doing was deffending his breed and saying most staffies owners are responsible owners.
Don't walk you dog there if your don't like the company. Maybe you should have thought about were you would walk the dog before you bought it rather buying it and then thinking about were to exercise it.
Don't blame other breeds for your lack of forward planning.
Top 10 most dangerus dogs, if you believe what you read
While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:
Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

pimmo in all honesty mate i took my dog to puppy clases when it was younger and they never told me to train it off the lead, they did do some work off the lead but they stressed that if another dog was around then you were to put it back on its lead. i dont understand why you insist on yours being off all the time, my dog goes off the lead on fields where i have a very good view and if i see another dog then it goes back on, and i always ask the other owner to do the same. were i go and im sure its the same for most people, i see the same people all the time so we know each other and so do the dogs

Just because you failed to find a suitable place to walk your dog before you bought it don't blame other people.

Im joking
Chav indeed
T5OLF, Its all good mate, you only have to see one to be terrified, but in reality they are generally very affectionate dogs. Was actually quite shocked to see how many attacks there are "responsible" for in the USA.
All down to bad breeding and poor owners I guess.

Its not off all the time, its a pup, I cant have it off the lead when I'm near roads or other people and I tend to get hold of her until the owner of another dog says it is ok.. I know its not to be trusted but the dog need to socialise, if I hide her away she'll never be ok with other dogs.
There is no one bread that is Chav and if a gang of lads decided to walk around with a Germen Shepherd that too would become a "chav" dog !
Thank you to the people that have taken this thread seriously and actually give me feedback in an none insulting and interesting way.
Its good to know that Scooby owners make good dog owners

In such cases, if the dog not on a lead receives a bite or 2 from mine, I have no pity, and would hope the owner would not try and suggest my "controlled" dog was to blame. Im not gonna muzzle my dog so others can walk theirs off the lead.

My dogs would go no where near your nasty little chav thing in the first place. What a fool for buying a dog that wants to bite other dogs.

People take things you say the wrong way too
SN is struggling at the moment with attitude.
Oh my dog will be off the lead around other dogs once the recall command is unquestionable ! Which apparently GS are very clever and respond to training really well ! Although to look at the fluffy, slug eating, house pooing *** sniffing lump.. you'd question that

Peoples dogs are part of there family and if you slate there dog then it's like slating one of there kids, hence the reason people get so wound up about there dog being called, usually by people who know nothing about the breed other than what they have read.
You will find staffie owners get pissed off with the hard time there pets get and will defend there dog as it's always this type of breed that get's a hard time. It's a shame that the chav types have latched on to this breed as they really are an amazing dog, something you would know if you had dealings with a well looked after family pet like mine and most peoples.
Hope you find a safe place to walk and please don't tar certain dogs with the same brush.

As for being off the lead thats a personal choice and one if you take responsibility for, is not a crime. Just remember some people dont like dogs full stop. They might not have a dog with them, but in the same breath might not want to be approached by a dog.
