Speak to Andy at Scoobyteknix, they are very reasonably priced, and all work ive had from them has been spot on.

Not related to them, i had a big end go on my 93 classic, i was getting quotes of £2k - £2.5 from main agents for a full rebuild, and £2k ish from others, and that was 3 years ago. Biggest problem, was labour charges, i was getting quotes of over £1k to do a head gasket, when that what i thought was problem ........... that was money i didnt have, so i resorted to getting a second hand engine of ebay.... i touched lucky, and got a 94 RA engine with 36k miles, inc fitted for £700. i started using fully synth 5-30 oil in it, but for me it was noisy, the oil looked like water, so ive reverted back to decent quality 10-40 mineral oil.

As for gearbox, ive had to repalce that .got a 2nd hand one of Andy at Scoobyteknix, that was over 2 years ago ...todate it has been sound.

If its big ends, you'll know ...it sounds like you've got a big hammer in it, when you put the throttle down. If the big ends have gone, then you may be looking at a crank, which i was quoted in the region of £500 new....i was advised dont get a regrind.

Good luck getting sorted

thanks for that, but im pretty sure its not the big ends. had noisy tappets for months, and its more of a clicking/tapping noise, especially when you have a listen through a screwdriver.

i had knocking on my dubious wrx last year and it wason the other side of the engine and a different sound, so know roughly what to look for...

I went round in circles messing with oil changes, different oils, teh ATF treatment, lifter free addaitive etc to quieten my tappets down.

Turns out I have a MY97 car.

Which, guess what...has solid tappets...doh!

Will sort the tappety tappety thing should I ever feel inclined to to remove the engine, at the moment, that's not going to happen unless it starts making knockety knockety noises.

CoB mate ,i wouldnt worry too much about noisy tappets. Ive noisy tappets/injectors but i wont bother shelling out money for a noise to dissapear!!!
Instead ive got used to the fact that my car sounds like a 1.1 Fiesta!!!!!

main issue at the moment is my gearbox. think that will get sorted first, along with more regular oil changes me thinks.

get a compression test done choc, mine made the same noise for months was told it was just tappets by the dealer when it was serviced in june drove about everywhere ok but when i went to get the tappets done last week a comp test showed it was down a cylinder,no smoke or anything no oil used, still pulled well only symptom was the ticking noise on the pass side and was running slightly rich but i put that down to the 02 sensor being out,i now need a new engine

Could possibly be the injectors you are hearing perhaps?

As said the only real way to cure noisy tappets is to have them reshimmed.

Personally id buy new ones and do the job myself, just a case of whipping the valvetrain apart and slipping in the new tappets, job done.

possibly, but having a good listen round, i think more likely to be a tappet somewhere. again, going on others opinions...

Don't lay too much weight on anything I've said. While it is "knowledged speculation", that's no substitute to actually having it looked at/checked over and the necessary proper tests done.

Mike.
exactly,a few folk said tappets to me including the dealer as it did indeed sound like an old cvh fiesta but a quick compression test at a specialist showed something a lot more serious (and expensive) hope everything works out for you better than id did for me but get it looked at properly asap dont leave it thinking it will be ok like i did

Hi there , i would say try a engine flush in the car , then put a 10/50 oil in it .
i my self use a 5/30 in my 1994 its grate .
but i allways flush the engine first. allso try oil changing 3months or sooner if you are driving the car hard the oil will brake down more than if you drive normal
