I'm not really qualified to be in this thread, because I have spend precisely £0 on my Scoob this month so far. That's because the wife drives it daily and she's filled it with petrol. 37,500 mile service due before Feb though, so expect my balance to rise shortly.

This is definitely my kind of club. My Scoob has been in storage since last September (in no small part thanks to Osama [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] ) but it still costs me £200 per month in finance.

Currently the car is subject to a SORN and is (obviously) off the road, is not insured/taxed/MoT'd, needs it's 60k service, and has a knackered performance exhaust.

For me to get the car back on the road I estimate will cost in the region of £3000. For a car (MY93 WRX) worth around £5k it almost sounds worth scrapping it...

Well, looks like my STi5 engine has given way big style...
Engine just cut out but looks likely that a conrod (or worse) has gone resulting in a possible full rebuild of the engine [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

Not happy as the problem occured 3 days before Christmas [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

Ah but Phil knows how it used to go, I was behind him on the Salsa-King Economy run, sorry the Tour o' Derbyshire, earlier this year! Since then it has gained a wee bit of power (35 bhp and 90 lbft) and weirdly, got more economical!

Well I must say im in stitches after reading this thread - tears of disbelief are running down my cheeks as I realise that although it costs me an arm and a leg already - ITS ONLY GONNA GET WORSE!

Er, I think I have changed my mind on Scoob ownership, 2 grand in a month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think a Vulcan bomber would be cheaper to put fuel in.

Also judging by the horror stories, they dont seem as reliable as I would have beleived based on the JD Power survey !

My T5 has cost £100 in fuel this month (23/24 Mpg), and nothing else, the insurance cost £405 this year (31 Full NCD). needs new disks and pads, Euro car parts < £100. I know its not an Impreza but it does have 225 bhp so can be compared for cost.

My work car (aged Pug 309) has cost £60 for Petrol this month (37 MPG)and £3.50 for antifreeze when a pipe burst, pipe replaced with offcut from Rover Vitesse (Dont ask), insurance full comp is £196, go to the pub leave it, pick it up 2 days later intact.

I think I will wait for Scoob ownership until Lottery win!

no...you can't say that
cus i've had my car since june '99 its a MY97...its covered 74k miles (only done 22k miles since i've had it)
and this month is the first time i've had trouble with things going wrong...Clutch is really wear and tear and my other stuff is acceptable cus of the mileage and age of the car...so i don't think this is bad going and the only problem i've got is that its all come at the same time and wronge time just after Christmas!

nothing else has been any trouble on the car...other cost have only been usual service costs, petrol and additional mods i've done (stainless steel zorst and bits and bobs nothing special).

so i would say that its been very reliable as a car to run. and more fun than a T5 VOLVO!!!!! Yawn!!!! green wellie club and labrador!

For someone who is thinking about buying my first Subaru this is really quite depressing to read.
I cannot believe that you people are spending on average £400 per month to run a car!
My mortgage is less than that and house's are going up not down like car prices.
In 5 years time when the car is gone and you are left with nothing but memories aren't you going to wish that you invested the money in something else? like a small house.
I'm slowly having a change of heart........

All this was covered in just over 7000 miles
plus the hit of £5200! in depreciation I took in just over 6 months of being in possesion of the car, I owned it for about 9 months but didn't take delivery for nearly 3 [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] months, anyway I digress and after reading back all this and adding it up ( Whats that about £13.5k! not including pit stops)

Well I've had nothing go wrong with my car at all (MY00, so I should hope not ) and in the first 12 months of ownership it cost me £8,750 all in to do 11,500 miles, and would have been more if I had replaced the stolen spoiler with a proper subaru item, and ever got round to getting the keyed panel resprayed.

If I could go back and choose to do it again, I wouldn't have bought one, but that's life, can't change what has happened. However for anyone thinking about getting one I'd suggest they consider very carefully the costs involved.

i had a BMW b4 the scoob only a 316i but colour coded it looka 320i. in the 3.5 years of having it i had it broken in to ever year!
TOUCH would the Scoob has been less of a target! so in one one i feel better for having the scoob cus it looks like a Proton Persona (a red taxi)
i'll wait and see when the STi5 spoiler goes on next week! lol
fingers crossed!

if you've never had a scoob you'll always wonder what it was like to have one...drive one...have the BIG GRIN factor we all have even though we've just added up a small fortune between us!

Probably only done 100 miles in 6 Months, spent no money what so ever this month (even petrol) on the scooby. Today was the first time this year I have driven it!!!. It's garaged, I just can't afford to run it at the moment.

Hi Phil,

It's been a while, I trust you are well. Well lane doesn't seem that long ago. I've been back since then as well, boost was sorted out, it's got 251bhp now, all I have to get now is an exhaust, and it'll be sorted.

I've been out of the forces now for 8 months (I'm a proper Civvy now), work in Wakefield, testing the new Virgin tilting trains.

Yeh, dad's still got the evo, I keep asking him whether he's going to get an Evo 5 or 6, but he's happy with what he's got!!! each to his own I suppose!! he reckons he gets more interest from Is Evo 1 than anybody else. I take that at face value!!.

I've garaged the Scooby for the winter, to keep costs and mileage down and to keep it nice and clean.

I'm hoping to attend most of the events next year, if anything crops up I'll let you know. I will try and attend one of your Nottingham meets If I can.

I'm hoping to spend a few quid on it aswell.

Sorry to hear about the problems you have been having. We all get them at some stage!!. Hope you get it all sorted.

When I changed my last car I thought about going for something other than a Scoob. But I couldn't bring myself to do it, mainly cos its been so reliable and good fun. The fuel consumption took perhaps a couple of months to get used to but then I was fine - I got used to planning my life around filling stations ! So I opted to get the P1. I thought about buying something more "sensible" like a VW and also thought about a BMW 330Ci sport, but I felt I had one last Scooby in me - so that was that. I think I will most likely keep the P1 for 3 years and then that will be the end for me - I don't look at the costs for fear. I'll probably compromise for my next car and get something thats reasonably quick (circa 7-8 seconds I guess) and one that costs less to keep on the road.

Having read all the posts I don't know whether to be horrified/shocked or comforted/commiserated by the fact that I'm not the only one.

Then I just remember the 'grin factor' and everything seems alright again ... I think ......

Someone just reassure me that the Scoob was the best car I've ever bought ... at the moment all I keep hearing is my mum saying ... Well if you will buy such an expensive car" and "that car's been nothing but a liability, perhaps you should get rid of it"

Close your eyes ... relax ... picture the scoob in your mind, all clean and gleaming ... exhaust roaring .... disappearing into the distance ... that's better now ....

The scoob will always be the best car I have owned because it is a car I have wanted for 7 odd years. It may only be an MY94 WRX nothing flash like a 22B or P1, but it is MY scooby, no one bought it for me, nobody is helping me pay for it, it is ENTIRELY mine.

Unfortunately my baby is going to have to go asap, parental pressure to sell it is overwhelming, after these spate of high profile robberies, of course my parents are concerned not only for their safety but that of my sister, who is a vulnerable dependant. I cannot value the car above my family, so she will go.

I will be so, so sorry to see her go, it will be like losing a friend!!! It's wierd how you get so attached to them! Even though she has cost me near on £25,000 odd since owning her including the initial cost of purchase, insurance, meets, services, repairs, etc, etc, etc!!!

I will get another scoob of course, but none will have such a lasting feeling as the one and only LMW

For sure the Scooby is superb motor, truly fast, awesome road handling, its easy to forget the true cost of ownership when a car like this gives so much fun and pleasure. I spoke to one of our techies last week (he's in his 40's) and has a top draw Scooby and he was telling me that after 18 months of ownership he still rates the car big time. Fact is that I personally won't able to go on for year after year spending loads of dosh on a car that doesn't make sense to own - but I'm okay for a few years, I don't know its like a love affair, you know its bad for you and you keep going back for more, but you know its bad and that you're gonna have to stop some time. Does that make sense ?

To make me even more depressed about how much my car costs to run my girlfriend ordered her new car at the weekend.

OK it is only a Fiat Punto 1.2 but brand new it costs £7500. She traded in her 2.5 year old Punto and they offered her £3000 which means it depreciated £4000 over 2.5 years. Insurance is £250 a year, servicing over the 2.5 years cost £260. It also does nearly 40 MPG, infact when I was driving it during the fuel crisis I couldn't believe how little fuel it used compared to my Impreza. To add insult to injury it even falls into the lowest road tax band.

They also offered her 0% finance over 3 years on the remaining £4500.

So basically the interest on the finance on my car would almost pay for her new Punto. But hey I need a 215BHP rally car to drive the 5 miles to work each day (in heavy traffic)....
