Well I think my P1 is quite cheap to run in comparison with some cars I've owned over the years. Like a 4.6 Range Rover, now that used to drink fuel.

Also I think, a quick look over at the RS Owners Club Board and seeing how much they spend would convince you that we don't have it that bad at the end of the day....

IMHO it's only a small price to pay for so much enjoyment.

Any car more expensive/powerful than a basic Punto/Clio is a luxury. I like to indulge myself with a Scoob.

Anyway, all cars depreciate. The depreciation alone on a P1 would have paid for all my car costs in the last year, including petrol, insurance, depreciation, interest on finance etc. Depreciation is the biggest single expense of running any car, so the fact that petrol cost over a couple of years can come close to depreciation shows that it's actually not too bad a car to run. Well, compared to, say, a Mondeo V6 or something.

My UK MY99 has cost me (in 18 months and 20,000 miles) approx:
£540 for tyres
£720 for servicing (although another £100 next week)
£140 for bump steer mod
£7,500 depreciation
£3,000 for fuel
£1,400 for insurance
£1,500 interest on finance (ouch, should have held out for a better deal there )

Total: £14,800, or just under 75p/mile.

But if I keep it for another year and 12,000 miles, depreciation will level out (say £2k in the next year), finance ends so no more interest, doubt I'll need new tyres again, say £900 for servicing and the same for insurance, and you're looking at £5620 for the next 12k miles, i.e. well under 50p a mile.

So go out and bag yourself a bargain MY99 now - nearly as cheap to run as a Punto!

Thanks guys you've made me feel much better about the money i have spent on my Golf - i was going to buy a scoob before i bought it
Paid £8800 about 14 months ago at auction (with 10 months of the manufactures warranty remaining)

2 x £200.00 services (+ £500 warranty work) - not bad for a car bought at auction.
£800.00 insurance plus i quess on average over the year about £90 a month on petrol.....So £190 a month (no finance)

If only I hadn't started
£1000 racelogic traction control
£800 springs, dampers & strut braces
£1000 Front mount intercooler
£1750 Turbo upgrade
£750 full milltek exhaust with sports cat
£400 17" TT alloys with tyres (bargain of the year) look much better on the Golf than they do on the TT
£1400 4 POT 993 Turbo Brake upgrade

Bugger i better stop i feeling :-( again

Still 235 bhp/245lbs torque is a bit of a laugh

Thumbs up

Think i've turned into one of those self harming people Every reply has a horror story, but still i had to read on.
Maybe i just wanted to feel better.......Failed

Money is for spending, it is true, but there are some bloody good arguments for not spending it on the car!!

Some of you guys have spent a fortune on your car, if it was me, i'd not be able to sleep at night let alone pass it off as "Worth it"

Fortunatley, i'm not in the big spending league, but i am envious of some of you guys who run the scoob on next to nothing. Low usage, older, NCB, clean licence, no finance etc.

Phil, don't do this again

I'll join

Sometimes, on a quiet day, sitting at my desk in the office, I think about just how much extra money I'd have every month if I didn't own the Scooby.

So far the drive to and from work is enough to put any worries out of my head because so far I feel it's all worth it (this is after owning it for 4 1/2 months.

Sometimes the posts I read on here make me feel like I'm the only person here that has to worry about money
I've read posts that say "if you have to think about the running costs, you can't afford to own one".
Whilst I don't agree with that statement I do feel sometimes that I am out of my league.

I bet there aren't many of you on here that earn less than 18k a year?

The Subaru is like an addiction to me that I just can't (and don't want to) kick

Matt
Monthly costs;
£300 finance
£200 creditcard (paying it off - not spending on it)
£120ish petrol

Extra things;
£600 P1 alloys
£50 P1 backbox
£650 servicing + repair (can't remember exactly what but new front brakes - anti roll bar links)
£40 Gear **** (the other one rattled)

Upcoming costs;
£450 new tyres (P-Zero's are crap but can't afford to replace until they are worn)
£0 on upgrades please no!... Eibachs..Mmmmmm NO!

Feeling a sense of relief and disbelief at the cost of these wonderful machines. I love the car and every drive (bar one that ends before the turbo is warmed up ) makes me smile.

Sti 5 bought on October 14th 2001;

£1350 Service, Full Mongoose Exhaust, HKS Dump Valve
£40 window switch
£195 clear indicators + Sti pedal set
£750 ARC induction/fit new Sensor Mass Air Flow
£20 Sti Anti Theft Valve Caps
£700 service (plugs/ pads/ MOT/ ECU reset/ FCD + install)
£1275 wheels + tyres

Looking at a grand total of £4330! And fuel??? Some 5k miles done so approx £850

Is it worth it?!?!? I have 315 reasons why it is

PS Relief that I am not the only one spending obscene amounts of cash on the car

Thanks guys!! I had managed to convince myself that I was better off keeping the Impreza due to the depreciation I have already absorbed and you have to go and start a thread like this!

Last time I calculated it the costs per month (depreciation, servicing, fuel, tyres, road tax, insurance) over 3 years worked out at something like £750 a month. Thats £750 a month with no unexpected extras such as repairs or mods.

Felt slightly sick when I worked out the actual monthly figure..

Edited to say my mortgage is only £25 a month more than that...

Talking

Annual costs based exl deprecialtion based on 12k miles

petrol £1920 based on 48 tank fulls (@£40 a go) x 250 miles from a tank full
insurance £600
tax £130
servicing £600
tyres £330
'other' £500

Total £4080

or £340 per month or 34p a miles!!

I just paid off the finance which was £300 a month, spent a total of £3600 in total on this last year.

AND if you take into account depreciation of £5k over the last year the month cost rises to a wait for it ......

£756 per month or 75p per mile

and then theres the small matter of the £20k I've shelled out to buy the thing in the last year (not inc the £3600 finance) it feels like £27680!!

OR £2306 per month OR £2.30p per mile!!

LOL would not sell it though - or perhaps I should ahave waited a year and brought a STi prodrive for cash

Edited to add - no mods yet, that would send these figs through the roof

Cool

Phil,

I've driven the Skoda Octavia RS Turbo.

Build quality is loads better than the Scoob (Audi quality half leather interior) and on road performance is not far behind the Scoob (max torque from 1900-5500rpm) with a 146mph top end.
Dont knock it until you've tried it.

I think Phil would be the bloke on the advert running across the field. LOL

Count me in! I think I will have spent the most this month tho'! My WRX was pulled out of a ditch on Tuesday after having a red stripe put down the side and a new 1 off bonnet bulge and bumper thanks to a rather large Give Way sign, all thanks to a Corsa Van!!. At least it wasnt my fault
