I've got a MY01 and have grown to like the looks. I agree that the front is the weakest bit, but I quite like it now. I may get the morrettes when I get a spare bit of cash, but I can live with them.
I used to like the old model, but it now looks like any mid 90s jap car - compare it with a Dihatsu (or however you spell it) Applause (or what ever it's called). Or how about the pre-bug Corolla?
OK I'm biased, and I don't want people to agree with me. I bought that car for many reasons, one of which was that it was different and understated. A bit of a Q car if you like.
I never had an earlier version (didn't have the cash at the time), but I feel sure I would prefer the more refined nature of the latest model. I hate rattles, cheap trim, noise. Sure there's more rawness in the old model, but I prefer the refinement.
These are my views, I'm not trying to pursuade anybody to agree with me (not that you lot would anyway!)

I really agree with ga33a's first paragraph: whatever the preference, it would be silly to make such a division.
Subarus are an acquired taste. I see just as many reasons for liking the old model as there are for the new model.
I'm still jealous at the STi type Chuck models though

New Scooby is pretty much underrated by magazines IMO, It's very good. Only thing is that it's a bit less exciting than the old one. But handling is better and quality is in a different league...

I have a MY99 4 door and love the raw look of it. I've seen plently of posts critising the new shape, at the end of the day it comes down to personal opinion. I personally cannot stand the shape of the new one, I spent 45 minutes looking round one and still came away unconvinced, but must say the interior is second to none.
What I do ask myself is, if so many people like the shape of the new car, why when looking at modifications, the majority have changed the light layout, interesting.
I'm sure when they update it again, which certainly will be earlier than expected compared to the old shape, they'll create a shape pleasing to the majority.
I'll wait with bated breath.

Yeah Reidy i believe you. Why not go the whole hog and fit rally lights on the front, youll see more that way.

What a fantastic idea - "rally lights".
Perhaps I shall fit a roll cage, a fire extinguisher, take out the back seats, fill the boot with a spare and lots of safety kit and tie my shopping to the roof if I need to go to Tesco.
I confess to having fitted the morettes to stop the car looking so silly, however, they do improve night vision.

How do you get the new one to feel like the old one, then? I get a discount off a new car, so am limited to the new one - but coming from 205 GTIs and a cheap Caterham imitation, even my Terzo didn't give me huge thrills. Erm, except when I glanced at the speedo and realised how fast I was going...
So whaddya do?
Decat, PPP for shove and noise, I assume.
What about the floaty steering? I understand the understeer has almost gone, but is there any way of giving better driver feedback? Is anyone (Scoobysport etc) looking into a quicker steering rack? (Sorry if this was raised in Steering forum, I don't read it!)
Any other mods, for driver excitement? I know there are body mods already, so we leave the looks out...
Leda suspension necessary for improved road feel? Great on track I'm sure, but what about at 40mph in the suburbs?
Come on folks, be constructive!

This is all down to personal preference and why you bought the car in the first place. If we all agreed that a certain model and set-up was the thing to have life would get so boring.
I bought my MY01 because It was what I wanted but last week I was chatting to a guy who had recently bought a gorgeous Terzo. I can appreciate his car just as he could appreciate my car.
I also own a classic 911 and am a member of the PCGB. Each model is treated as a unique bit of Porsche in its own right. An old 356 is never going to live with 944 but who cares as they are both great cars and the guy who bought the 356 is unlikely to swap it for a newer model. Surely this also extends to Subaru.

I just want to know if anyone's banged a car in front of them while admiring themselves in the shopfront windows.:-)
I find myself doing this too, lately. You would swear I had a Ferrari or something.:-)

Put in into perspective, Im on on my second one, original 98 on a S plate brand new, excellent fun. My July 01) impreza wrx, excellent fun and a bit quicker at the top end (thanks to prodrive and 1600 squids), its a uk300 so not so bugeyed, but even some standard WRX in the right colour (blue/black) do not look so bad, (or is it black/blue) without the eye mods.
So the cars has been brought up to date in terms of looks and some pleasantries inside, but the old model is still a good overall package for the amount you have to spend. Would suggest whilst fitting flame suit that for the UK market the P1 was the best overall in terms of pure performance (22b ignored here due to cost), and most probably will still be better than the STI in overall enjoyment factor, it just needs subaru to get some sense or normality in regard to realistic pricing on it now the the base model has been superceeded
Enough crap and fence sitting from me.
Cheers

WRC/UK300 headlamps and an STI bonnet scoop (as I have) and I think the agressive looks are back. I have noticed more people get out of my way, now that I have had these additions.
Most non-performance car lovers that I speak too, actually liked the look of the MY01 in standard form. In fact, some people have told me, that I should have stuck to the original lights!!
its all down to personal opinion

Am I the only one on this board who doesn't like the Morettes on the "New age" car. Come to think of I'm not too keen on the normal lights either.... Roll on the Prodrive "re-skin".
Fair enough, the new car does have it plus points (refinement, interior, spec) over the old one, but for the bang it seems the UK STi (or Mr Croney et al.) will address any shortcomings.
But in the end of the day it's all academic, whatever Scoob is excellent if it puts a grin on your face each you drive it

I havent read the whole thread so maybe someone's pointed this out already. If a site full of Suburu owners can't decide if they like it or not, how bad are the resale values going to be? If anyones going to like it its more than likely you'll find them here! Judging from what i've read the second-hand prices are going to be very low!

Most face-lifts cause this kind of reaction. I personally prefer the look of an Evo5 or Evo6 to the Evo7 which just looks wrong to me, even in the flesh. But I believe the 7 is an awesome car to drive (I'd like to try!).
Next year I'll probably replace my MY00 UK 5-door and I'd like a 5-door to replace it with. I seem to be quite different to a lot of guys here in that my scoob never goes over about 85-90 as I'm **** scared of losing my licence, but I love really hard acceleration and giving it some through country lanes. Also I'm seriously tail happy on empty roundabouts and bends.
I reckon for someone like me the only choice for a new car will be an imported STi8 wagon. I'd like it if the styling gets a tweak by the time they release the STi8, but I could live with not standing out from the crowd, not looking hard or aggressive and not being able to out accelerate a GT3 from 140+ on the roads :-)
It's progress guys, but do keep up the pressure on Subaru!

Morretes suck!! The reason they sold so many was peer pressure. I watched it all on here.
I owned a MY98 in standard form - company car - for 3 years and loved it, no other car could have taken the punishment. This swayed me to purchace a MY01 around a year ago, it's the best car I've ever owned.
If an STi wagon was available - Type UK - I'd order it today.

I didn't like the Morettes either. For me the Scooby has to look like the Rally car (surely thats the point), that why I went for the WRC headlights. They improve the look (not that I disliked the standard lights that much), make it look more agressive and make it look a little bit more like the rally car

I haven't read the whole of this thread, so apologies if I'm repeating something, but:
I think the fact that Prodrive are being asked to re-style the WRX so soon after it's introduction says it all really. Subaru have screwed up - both old and new are ugly cars but the old one sold well based on it's reputation for outrageous performance even in standard form and it's rally-winning heritage. As yet the WRX doesn't really have either of these, it's just a quick but ugly car.
They've fallen been two stools - a lot of people who would have gone for the old model don't think the new one is aggressive or raw enough, and the more mainstream 'sporty saloon' market that Subaru seem to have gone after is too competitive. For the same price you can get a nice A4 or 320i.
Just my opinion, being someone that got one of the last of the old models..... I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a WRX next time, because with a few changes I'm sure it can be made just as performant as the old model, but in terms of 'showroom' appeal, it's a loser.... until Prodrive do their thing and Subaru have a WRC manufacturers' win or two under their belts....
