Its not against the law. As stated in myblackwrx's post above - its one of those things where it's not illegal, so by follow on, must be legal.

Apparantly not if you read post 27.

It's against the highway code, as is failure to move to the right after passing. I think in that case, you might be in a favorable position (wrong wording as no accident has a favorable position). Paticularly if witnesses could testify to the driver being in the outer lane for an unreasonable time.

Everyone can feel frustrated at being impeded by the car in front. "Reacting" to the situation by zooming down the LHS or overtaking on the RHS aggressively, then cutting across with your indicator flashing wildly is inherently dangerous. This tends to be why under-takers and their like have been prosecuted rather than someone bumbling along minding their business in the middle lane. It also leads to revenge road rage by the "hogger". Not fun if you have a new car and they have a B reg. montego.

Far better to count to 10 and re-evaluate the situation. Try patience, sympathy (for someone driving a Metro, corsa or nova, escrot) etc. If all else fails you're unlikely to be the only one impeded. Simply pull over to the next lane and let the guy tailgating you vent his fury on the "hogger". Usually, the hogger pulls over. You can then indicate and pull out past them using the Impreza's acceleration to safely and smoothly join the traffic in the outside lane.

I find that Imprezas generate strong emotions, actions...
I find most people "leap" out of the way when they notice the car, whilst some react stubbornly and refuse totally, to give way, whilst attempting eyeball through the RVM. And this is without overtly provoking them by driving too close.

How does this sound, my usual and I think quite reasonable.

Move close enough to indicate my intention to pass (not inspecting the back seats )

Wait for a reasonable opportunity for them to pull over if not, quick couple of flashes from the lights, still no action flash lights again wait. Pass on inside.

I reckon that's fair? though not very satisfying a lot of the time.

The Highway Code states that you should not overtake on the left unless the car in front is signalling a right turn.

It is reasonable to state therefore that drivers in the middle or outside lane would not expect to be overtaken on the left and therefore it is dangerous to do so.

That's exactly what I when confronted by an idiot in the 'fast lane'. Where I live both undertaking and lane hogging are illegal. I'd like to think that if I gave the numpty sufficient opportunity to move over before undertaking that said numpty would get stopped first.

I always drive in the left hand lan unless it is blocked whereby I move to the right to overtake.

It follows that if it is not blocked, I am not doing anything wrong. If you are sitting in teh outside lane my lane is stil clear !!

Lane discipline

Highway code rule 264
You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

I would be prepared to try and argue that in court - although I know I would lose.

This is the important bit - and lane hoggers will cause this problem.

268

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake.

In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

I read that one, but it did not help my argument, so I missed it off

If you're feeling really bored/brave/stupid you could even do the "reverse loop-da-loop". Which is obviously the same, but backwards! Although I wouldn't reccommend that for obvious reasons
ive done the first im sure the 2nd not yet
