You need only look at the response the post has got and the infraction given (not by me btw; someone beat me to it) to see what the community thinks of this kind of behaviour.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I share your sense of humour, therefore maybe I should call you abusive names and offer you out for a fight?

This is the last thing I will say on this matter as, quite frankly, it's getting tiresome and detracting from the point of the thread!

If you didn't like my original joke (which was clearly a joke hence the use of smilies), then you could have just ignored it, or rasied a polite objection in which case I would have been more than happy to say, 'sorry it offended you mate, but others liked it - no hard feelings'.

As it stood you opted to just call me a "sick ****"

When I rightly questioned the validity of inferring that someone supports dolphin slaughter on the basis that they cracked one joke about it and furthermore asked why you would want to call insult a complete stanger whose real views you'd not even bothered to find out, you responded with further insults and a threat of violence.

If you think that was intimidating for me, you're sadly mistaken! If you think my ego is fragile enough to respond in kind you're also in for a let down.

If you:

a) Can't take a joke
b) Can't make a civil objection or engage in a reasoned and adult debate, without resorting to insults
c) Need to threaten people who you disagree with

Then, to put it politely, sling your hook; as has become abundantly clear from the reception you've got on this thread, the commumity of SN doesn't want your kind posting on here!

Why is it that when a different culture is killing animals that us westerners consider wrong its such a big issue?

Because westerners think they have the definitive view about well, everything, to be honest! And if other cultures don't tow the line, we often feel our view should be imposed on them.

Much as I personally dislike dolphins being eaten, my issue is not with the fact that another country wishes to consume a creature I like, as much as the way in they are caught, treated and killed. Animals destined for foodstuff should always be treated with respect and killed humanely, so as to remove suffering as far as is possible; that's just common decency and humanity - something which should transcend culture and is something we can, and should, legitimately complain about.

This recipe is for the dolphin fish, a genuine non-mammal, not yer actual Flipper. Griddled it tastes more like steak than fish. Truly delish.

You might have warned me earlier! Certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth!

Does anyone have any sensible comments to make about this issue before Dave and I completely "muppetise" it?

Seems only polite to ask!

That said I think all that can be said has been said on this topic.

I tried that line on a female friend (with a great sense of humour I should add) and she retorted:

Yeah? Well how do you account for the lumps in it?

After I'd recovered I thought I should just point out that it was probably off on account of having been stored at body temp for the last few days!

She didn't take me up on my offer to try a sample then................Strange girl!

Humane, when it comes to abatoirs... Humane in terms of not causing undue distress.... maybe. The thing that would do my head would be the way it's broken down into simple tasks for mass-production. The never ending line of death!

Shipping the animals to the Abatoirs causes emence levels of stress, when they get there they are huddled up and electrocuted one by one then they are hung on a hook and their throats slit while they are merely stunned.. I'm not a veggie but I can accept that Humans eat other anmials and they will suffer for this.. The one and only thing that I dont agree with when it comes to killing dolphins is they are not farmed for that one specific use, they are intleligent creatures and they have lived in freedom up to the point they are slaughtered.

They can eat what they like as long as they kill it right. People saying "any slaughter house in the UK is the same"....are you sure???

My only experience of the UK system is seeing it of The F Word.....stun the pig, slit the throat. Grim but relatively pain free i assume?

Anyone watching the Japs pull the dolphins out by their tales, dump them in flat beds and drive them to the yard, then slit their throats with a machete while they wiggle about for ages while blood gushes out of them.....clearly still alive and aware - MUST agree that's not the way to go. If you did that to a UK farm mammal you'd go to jail!

I agree with this.

Also, there has to be some differentiation between animals. Nobody worries too much when they squash a spider. And I know sheep and cattle are stoopid cos they won't get out the way when I ride my mountain bike towards them. We're told that dolphins are "sentient", so we shouldn't be munching on beasts that are probably more intelligent than your average Glasgow inhabitant !

Still, even the coos should not be dispatched cruelly.
