I don't believe there's a specific law for getting out the way, but if they want to be really obtuse they may be able to claim obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duty. However, unless you're parked accross the road in an obvious attempt to prevent them from getting past rather than simply not moving out the way there's not a hope in hell it will stick.

With regards to getting any sort of response from them, I think Sonic's suggestion is a worthwhile tactic. Get some publicity behind you and you'll probably find they'll be more forthcoming.

Failing that, Claire, I've got some wheels that are going spare

Is it just women drivers you have a problem with? Going back to her first post the question was asked about how to go about complaining about the police an from what I can see so far none of your comments are answering her question just slagging off her driving, sounds like some trolling going on

It's an offence to deliberately obstruct an emergency vehicle, ie to try and prevent it's progress, but not moving out of the way is not an offence.

I'd imagine that as a good will gesture you'll get some payout from the police

Thanks Scousefly... ( I have to be careful what I say here now.... as a mod on SNET I have to behave ) How shall I put this... erm.....

People like this are looking for a reaction. (thats the nicest way I can think of putting it )

I get it every day from chavs in their peugeot 205s, novas, clios etc etc ... people threatened by a woman in a powerful car... if it bothered me the car would of been sold a long time ago..... the fact I have 10 years no claims and a clean licence proves what sort of driver I am ... what about you DaveGTT can you say the same?

I moved over as far as I could without mounting the kerb and the van still came towards me and didnt slow down kept coming leaving me no option but to mount the kerb thus damaging my alloy.

Went to the police station to complain, got an inspector taking my details of what happened.

Inspector told me he had never had a complaint like this before... told him to come outside and see the car, he did and said ' oh now I see why' I said ' yes well if it was a 20 year old escort (no offence) we wouldnt be having this conversation'

Today I receive a phone call saying I have to inform my insurance company and make a claim and my insurance company can claim against them... told him I have 9 years no claims and no points, and Im not going to tarnish my record with a claim....

He's gone away to talk to some bigwig...

He told me that it is an offence not to move out of the way of an emergency vehicle on a shout.... even if it means damaging my car....

Where Do I Stand ?
Hope you get compensated. If not, just swallow it. In any case well done for being a good citizen and putting concern for others above your own well-being. The world could do with more people like you.

I was sat in a NYC cab some years back and he wouldn't move out of the way of an ambulance with lights and sirens as ' it probably wasn't an emergency anyway'. He wasn't pleased that I didn't tip him - that'll learn him

Not my belief, but the way it is.

THe trained driver should "anticipate" what other road users will do, and react accordingly. Defensive driving 101.
To be more precise, she had been indicating right then, as the ambulance approached, she turned off her indicator and moved from the right side of her lane to the middle of her lane. Exactly the behaviour of someone who was getting out of the way of an emergency vehicle. However, at the last second, after the ambulance was committed to the overtake, she indicates right again and turns.

Quite how someone can be unaware of an emergency vehicle behind them when the sirens are going and lights flashing is beyond me.

Furthermore, if this ambulance driver gets convicted, they may as well abandon the whole idea of emergency vehicles and just drive at the speed limit, without any overtaking etc.

I still think that this copper told the OP that she had to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle as an attempt to fob off her legitimate claim to repairs.

Bear in mind police vehicles do not have conventional insurance. Any claims are paid out of their budget. No surprise this inspector was trying to safeguard his forces budget.

LMAO. Are you serious? Because youve never made a claim on your insurance and have a clean licence proves what sort of driver you are? It proves jack. Seriously, yeah I have a clean licence for the time being and my last claim on the insurance was approximately 5 years ago. What does that prove?

Im in Grantham FYI, not that that has much to do with it, I dont fancy coming to your meets, I grew out of all that a few years ago Although for what its worth, I think youve taken all my comments way out of perspective... Sounds almost like your offering me out at a meeting or something

Morning Dave

Having a clean licence and not claiming would prove that you took care over your car... considering the car is a daily run about and is used every day

Not at all offering you out... What I meant was you could come and meet and see what sort of person I actually am.

I didnt take your comments out of context at all.. it was a fellow snetter that picked up on them. I dont bite... say what you like, its only words

Good morning

No nessisarilly proving that, as you self confessed about you have no claims because of a £400 excess lol.

I gathered you dont bite, I could tell that from an early point in the thread, it was the other poster that bit and didnt take it very nicely either. Yes, I was being slightly critical of your driving etc but as pointed out straight away I didnt intend on offending you, just the way I am, very sarcastic etc....

Moving on...

No offence taken... If I bit at every post that had a go... the time I spend on here I would probably get myself banned....

The excess I dont mind... the reason I quoted that was because of the one wheel I need repairing for the excess I could get a whole set.. that was the comparison

Would you like me to go google all the accidents that the police have had?

Including an incident where a police car went through a red light in York and I helped pull a driver out of his car.. because he was half way through the lights and they didnt see him?

Case of once bitten.....

It is in fact illegal to mount the kerb although it is accepted that at times it may be necessary. You had a perfectly valid reason not to want to mount the kerb and the fact that your alloy wheel was damaged demonstrates that.

Was the road so narrow that the van could not pass you within the confines of the kerbs? It is a fact that if youi are stopped and another car hits you while you are stopped, it is his fault regardless of how you are parked at the time. I would have stopped by the kerb myself and if really necessary driven slowly onto the kerb in my own time to avoid damage to my wheel. If he had hit your car while you were stopped it would be down to him.

I would insist as you have done that you are not prepared to claim from your own insurance, I think that is a con and that they are likely to wiggle out of responsibility for the damage.

Maybe as was suggested a call to your local paper might do the trick. The cop driver was in the wrong forcing you off the road.

Les
