Devildog is correct - the European limit is 15k Euros, which is about £10.5k at the moment. We use £10K as our trigger.

£9k may be used by car dealers and other non-financial institutions who want to be cautious.

However, a dealer may impose their own lower limit as it applies to what they pay in to the bank as well as what you pay them.

Its been a long time since I worked in UK Banking, but instant interbank CHAPS payments were available in 1993, so I can't understand why they're not now.

Right I've agreed to purchase a car - actually only £7k, so having to get out significantly less cash than expected initially.

Problem is I am currently based at my work address so dont have my passport. I'm going to call the bank tomorrow to check what ID would be suitable.

I have photo driving licence, credit and debt cards in my name, some bills but I dont think they're under 3months old, also got V5 from my current car with address on.

Anyone who works in a bank know if this would be enough, or do I need to travel and get my passport?

cheers!

why not just phone them up and transfer the funds by TT???? at most they will charge you £20 or so to do - on a £7k car thats nothing.

unless your time is worthless £20 is far better than visiting your bank! (dont think i've been inside a bank for getting cash since 1985 when i took £2 out of the Abbey National to buy a toy car!)

I did mention that to the seller, but he said he'd prefer cash!

I'm just hoping the bank with let me have the required amount tomorrow with the selection of ID I've got...
