I work for PFarce on contract, do 1200 miles a week min. Fuel cost up by about £20/week. Not getting paid any more. Think of the transport industry!!.

Surely the cost of fuel is your major overhead, so increases should have been factored in when contracts were signed?
Imagine if fuel suddenly went up to £2 a litre - you'd be *****d.

Personally, I think there should be price tears for fuel and commercial users should be able to reclaim some of there fuel taxes as they need to use the fuel to keep the world progressing.
As for us planet destroying motorist, tax us all you like, I'd pay as much as I could afford to polute the atmosphere.
I sold our Focus TDCi that did 55mpg for my Scoob and hey, it was my choice
We all made it but hauliers etc..... they cant help using fuel.

Its not like the price of fuel affects anything else is it ?
Won't make a lot of difference to me in isolation but its part of the bigger picture of being royally buggered for working and having aspirations.
I now work seven miles from home, seventy miles a week and my car does low twenties mpg, so say three gallons or 14 ish litres * 5 p, 70p and the same-ish again for the wifes car, say £1.50 a week, six quid a month, a couple of pints but I would rather have the two pints than pay extra for petrol !
I sympathise with those on lower incomes but just above the state assistance band, with a mortgage and a long commute, they are the ones that get stiffed.

Meant so much he said it twice!
I agree, though.
I don't need a car as I get free train use and work in C London, so never drive. I have a few classics and a newish motor but probably do 10 miles per week through need, another 100 on top through laziness/pleasure.
If I was tied to fuel use I'd be annoyed.

The problem of increased fuel costs have a far reaching consequential effect on all of us...
As has been said before, goods in the shops will cost more.
Inflation will rise, as it has done already this month (mainly due to increased fuel prices) and well over the Bank of Englands threshold.
This in turn will mean it will be very unlikely there being any interest rate reductions, moreso a rate rise will be on the cards to lower inflation.
Higher rates, more companies unable to pay wage increases, plus spiraling costs equals less people being able to pay the extra mortgage and therefore the possibility of a housing crash.
Fewer people having as much disposable income left each month so out goes the gym,the little building job you were having done, the painting, next years holiday might need to be shortened or cancelled.......and on and on.
It's the overall snowballing cumulative effect that most people don't see.
I've seen it happening already and people are starting to hold onto what cash they've got.
But my truck only does 25mpg so what the hell.....

The car lease allows for 20k km @ Eur 1.20 per litre +/- 10%.
I'll likely be driving 16-18k @ Eur 1.4 per litre in 2007, so there is no effect. That said I filled up with 98 RON this morning @ 1.60 per litre at a local Texaco garage yesterday = Gbp 1.13 per litre. 2008 might not be so rosy...
